Guitarist Neal Schon is returning to some familiar 1980s-era musical associations - though neither of them are Journey. Instead, he's rekindling associations from the days of HSAS, and Schon and Hammer. He's just finished recording with Sammy Hagar of Chickenfoot - with whom Schon was a member of HSAS. Their 1984 album Through the Fire, which included a memorable cover [...]

Talk about your lost classics. The Mahavishnu Orchestra's 1973 album, Between Nothingness And Eternity, has to be the holy grail. It is only 42 minutes long and contains just three tracks recorded live at the Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park, New York City, New York, over two days in August 1973. In 1974 the album reached forty-one on the Billboard Pop Album charts, but it isn't pop. How many pop albums do you know where the shortest cut is over eight minutes long and longest exceeds twenty-one minutes? In its first incarnation the Mahavishnu Orchestra [...]
Not a lot of television shows win multiple Grammys. Then again, not a lot of television shows ever sounded (or looked) like Miami Vice. The cutting-edge series perfectly captured the pastel zeitg... Continue reading "Jan Hammer and the Top 10 TV Theme Songs of the '80s" >

Beatmaster Wake (a.k.a. Matthew Michael Ahern Hettich) dropped his Oakland Blackouts EP today on Proximal Records. " Oakland Blackouts was recorded in takes and played mostly live," he says of the release. "Samples were mapped to midi controllers, and effects and automation were played in on faders. The synthesizers are largely (edited) live recordings made with hardware, including an analog modular synthesizer and a Yamaha FM synth from the '80s." The period surrounding the creation of the EP was an especially productive one, and Wake has crafted a Big Shot Guest Mix featuring [...]
Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia: First up is the atmospheric keytar master, Jan Hammer with 1986’s ‘Crockett's Theme’ from Miami Vice. Dorine Hollier ’s Tonight...Crazy Night’ from198 is as epic a slice of Italo as you’ll ever hear! From 1987 it’s Julia Claire ’s ‘Cat In Disguise’, pure post-Italo EuroPop cheese. Awesome! [...]
This new instrumental is interesting because Steve Smith showed up just as Journey took a turn in the late 1970s from its more fusion-informed early period toward a platinum-selling arena-rock formula. Still, you always got the sense, as he subsequently moved deeper into the jazz roots of his youth, that Smith might have been a better fit for the early [...]
A certified funky-fusion platinum smash, the George Martin-produced Blow by Blow peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 - hurtling itself to Record You Must Own status for Jeff Beck. So enough of that. Here's our list of other interesting offerings from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist, including both solo and Yardbirds sides - along with [...]

Ace little pop track I haven't been able to get out of my head all week. Swedish native Soso has created quite the unique blend of sounds, for me I get lots of Jan Hammer and Depeche mode vibes...which can only be a good thing. Good industrial pop looks like it may have a covergirl to lead the revival.

What a perfectly named track. Wobbly, shimmering analog synths gyrating back and forth against the backdrop of a pastel sunset... without a doubt the perfect soundtrack to a Miami boat race. My rich golden mullet blowing in the wind, the salty surf splashing against my waferers as they catch the reflection of several sultry blonde babes. Yep - I like this. DOWNLOAD

Once when I was on tour, I ended up smoking a bunch of opiated pot after a show in Arcata California. The people we were staying with had a big brown rock of crystalized opium, which they grated over a pipe full of California green. This wasn't really a great idea, I've had better, but it got worse. After getting zooted out of our fucking minds we ended up bombing hills on skateboards, which was a terrible idea. This wasn't a leisurely roll down an incline. When I say bombing hills, I mean to the point where you get the [...]
Or, 80’s Synth T.V. themes redux! This is a total rehash of a electronic rumors post from about three years ago, but I wanted to redo it with a few more tracks and some better quality version of a couple of the tune we featured last time. Also, back in the day it was all MediaFire and zShare and shit, and no-one likes that! So, here we have something a little different for this Sunday. Back in the 80’s, 2011 seemed like the far, far, future and although we still have no jetpacks, flying [...]

Nothing like an invigorating mountainous getaway weekend to reset the internal gears. But locales are a bit deceiving, and it's funny how some of the most beautiful stretches of Catskill highways are so well soundtracked by music designed for stylized drama from the opposite end of the coast. I realize that Miami Vice calls to mind signifiers of a most unforgiving mid-'80s recollection, but really, Michael Mann knew what he was doing. Ditto for Jan Hammer, who came a long way from his youthful fusion [...]
Miami Vice is one of the most awesome shows ever created, it swings from awesomely awesome to awesomely, unintentionally, hilarious with such ease! Jan Hammer ’s ‘Miami Vice Theme’ from 1985 is no laughing matter though. It’s serious smooth. Buy Jan Hammer’s music from: Follow @electronicrumor

FPU - Crockett's Theme [...]
If all music is part of some cosmic tapestry, if rhythm and melody are merely cogent representations of some inherent little spark of self-awareness that we all carry inside of ourselves like DNA, then sampling is more akin to making cocktails of our collective memories. The album that I wanted to kick off the new year with is one that many people haven't heard but know intimately, because packets of this album's DNA have marked and characterized well-known songs. If you were listening to music at all in the 902s, then there are pieces of this album [...]
Filed under: Video , The Hit List , Television Chances are, not too many people are humming the theme songs from 'The Mentalist' or 'Law & Order: SVU.' TV themes have so diminished in importance that many of them last only 15 seconds. Back when themes lasted closer to a minute, producers put more effort into procuring good songs. As a result, those songs [...]

...is the exotic term that Panamanian DJ/Producer Orlando M. Garcia uses to describe his electronic dance music. Growing up, EDM was hard to come by in Panama, but when he was 15 he managed to listen to some tunes over the Dutch short-wave radio station Netherlands Worldwide. Other inspiration came from early European electronic music producers such as Robert Miles and Depeche Mode. Orlando began his current project G-Tek in 2000. However, it wasn't until recent years that he had enough promotional opportunities for his career to truly take off. So do [...]
