Rachel Evans (Motion Sickness of Time Travel) Does the word "ambient" mean anything to you in 2012? It seems as though its usage becomes more and more scarce as the years go by. One might even call it out of fashion. Artists and journalists seem to be slightly squicked out by it. "Drone," a vaguer and less informative term, is more favored by the newer generation of artists and listeners. But despite these apparent trends against the A-word, the music itself is probably as big and [...]

Photo by Caroline Hayeur After some rest and time spent organizing his thoughts, staff writer Steve Kerr offers his review of MUTEK 2012 In the interest of full disclosure, I'll preface this by saying that I've lived in Montréal for a few years now, and seeing the annual MUTEK lineup always has me fluctuating between excited and dismayed. It isn't that we don't get interesting electronic music here, but more that it's often so sporadic: promoters will blow a lot of money on a great month of bookings, only to [...]

"On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese..." At a Polish church basement sale in the EV a few months ago, I bought this Tom Glazer cassette for something like 50 cents. I also bought a lot of Polskie Nagrania vinyl in the hopes that it would be jazz but it all turned out to be light instrumental/vocal music of one kind or another. Of course, the real charm was the coffee and cupcakes being sold and the Polish kids intended to market them. I'd never heard of Tom Glazer before--but, incidentally, I came across [...]

Masayoshi Fujita & Jan Jelinek Bird, Lake, Objects (2010, Faitiche) RIYL = Uh, Jan Jelinek, Chihei Hatakayama, Sawako No disrespect to Masayoshi Fujita, because whatever his contribution is here, it’s a good one (considering the results as a whole), but this is essentially, for me, a Jan Jelinek record. To which I say, it’s about time! It’s been about four years since his best-of-the-decade Tierbeobachtungen was released, and I’ve been itching for something new. Bird, Lake, Objects is the approximate [...]

I usually try not to lump together similar genres of music together in one post because that usually singles certain listeners out which I don't want to do but on the other hand I dislike posting low level style music among uptempo songs because listeners might not spend the extra time to search for the detail or take in the soft yet intricate sounds that are being offered. I do my best to find the least moody and harsh sounding ones in hopes of finding new fans to the low level genre. Here are a few recent favorites, note the [...]

Jan Jelinek Tiereobachtungen (Scape, 2006) The ability of Jan Jelinek to take the elements of electronic drone and somehow warp those elements into someething that could be described as jazz is beyond me. The guy's got skills, or some sort of bizarre apparatus obtained from another planet in order to manipulate sounds on this planet. Whatever the explanation for these oddly lovely patches of sound, I'm a fan. -Thistle

This is the second installment of my exploration / analysis of techno or electronica or dance or [insert genre tag]. Why I like it, why it's classified the way it is, the way it works, that sort of thing. I slipped the first part in under the radar, so if you want to be up to speed like a good student then jump over to http://casavista.blogspot.com/ 2009/01/iiiiive-got-big-beat-a ka-why-i-love.html first. REPLACE THESE STARS WITH FULL POST So yeah, big beat happened. Fatboy Slim probably ended up making out with the biggest loot from that party. From [...]

Minimalist electronic whiz Jan Jelinek follows up his successful Kosmischer Pitch album with another languid trip into the abyss. This time he focuses on a more organic feeling that breathes with flashes of life that contrast some of his past albums' stark coldness. The drones and soundscapes that are his trademark remain but on this album it's the details that really shine through. The title literally translates to "Animal Observations" and reportedly his influences for the album were liberation and release. These themes become apparent as murmurs of life bubble under the electronics. The sense of release swims [...]
DECIBEL / SEATTLE / SEPT. 14-17 Seattle's Decibel Festival was truly unbelievable! Dare I say it, it was better than Mutek. When comparing two North American electronic music festivals there's a few things to consider. Mutek has been going on strong now for six years. It is a well established festival that attracts like-minded people from all over the world who work in, support and love

Jan Jelinek is about to release another slice of looping krautness, with mushrooms. Tierbeobachtungen is only 6 tracks, but each hovers around the 7-8 minute mark, and never outstays its welcome. Jelinek still assembles his tracks with loops, very repetitive ones at that, but never have repeating loops sounded so warm and comforting and welcoming. Even the occassional squeals and squelches aren't that off-putting and only help in breaking up the rhythm of the loops, keeping the listener engaged. Timing is everything, and this record is coming out at [...]
