I had high hopes and expectations for this show. So high, in fact, that I skipped out on my first ever chance to see Underworld in Baltimore. I was a huge fan back when the Everything, Everything live album/dvd came out, and I was a huge fan of Trainspotting in high school. Who can forget that last monologue by Renton done over the opening chords of "Born Slippy Nuxx"? But that monologue is all about choice, and Saturday night I chose the rustic world of Bob and Small Sur over the nighttime beats of Underworld. I [...]

Whartscape 2008's Friday show was at the 2640 Space, a church undergoing renovation assisted by the Red Emma's collective. In exchange for their services, they get to hold events provided there is no alcohol sold/drunken on the premises...house of God and all. This year's line-up has more variety with a less shotgun-based approach of toss whoever, together whenever (as intimated by Adam in our interview). And what more perfect theme for the 2640 Space than a night focusing on folk and generally softer music. The hallowed and empty space, presided over by stained glass [...]
We're winding down here and it's time for the deluge of min-terviews and more. Today we've got Jana Hunter, DD/MM/YYYY and the Creepers featured. Jana Hunter First up is Jana Hunter, fairly recent Texan transplant to Baltimore, serving up some delicious, jangling, startlingly transparent and moving music. She was also the first bold soul to call us out on our slightly sarcastic costume question #5. Listen to some tunes and read on, intrepid web surfer! MP3: Jana Hunter [...]
Still riding waves made by the release of her Carrion EP last year, Jana Hunter has lined up a North American tour for the end of the summer. Joining the Gnomonsong songwriter on the tour will be a full band consisting of Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez (guitar, vocals), Andy Abelow (drums, alto sax, vocals), and Geoff Graham (bass, vocals). Alvarez will also open all dates. Before kicking off the full-blown tour, Hunter has scattered solo dates on [...]

To celebrate all things Wham and Whartscape, we asked some of the artists performing to answer five questions. Andy was our first test subject. Stay tuned for tons more in the week to come. Andy Abelow is all the fuck over the Baltimore scene, loosely dubbed "the Greatest Scene in the World" or "the Scene that Reads" by Rolling Stone. Like many in the musical circles of Charm City, he is an artistically polygynous multi-instrumentalist...going it solo as well as performing with many other acts including Jana Hunter and Bob Keal-fronted [...]

Texas native and current Bmore rez Jana Hunter will be lulling Friday night Whartscapers with the type of detached calm also accessible through hefty doses of NyQuil/self-pity or taking a nap in your car whilst it's being towed. Recorded on a borrowed four-track, her Carrion EP (as in the carcass of a dead animal, nice touch) is a simple and haunting assessment of bleak realities, like when you accidentally drop your keys into a river of molten lava and just let 'em go, because man, they're gone. It would be a shame [...]

Babies [MP3] Valkyries [MP3] Black Haven (with Devendra Banhart) [MP3] By framing her distinctive voice and the lyrics with the minimal production of her rhythms, Texan songstress Jana Hunter keeps things simple, clear and raw. Recorded in a mere two weeks, There's No Home (2007) captures the heart with its haunting strings and electric guitar arrangements, sing-along choruses and country-like tunes, while Jana unfolds her emotional complexity, sharing her intimate stories of love and longing. 91. The Fiery Furnaces Widow City; Since the release of Blueberry Boat The Fiery Furnaces have been churning out music in a non-stop fashion, but with little of the fanfare that met the release of their landmark album. On Widow City the duo return to their strengths, getting away from their experimental side that has led to some mixed results. The songs here are as well written as anything they
In a time of manufactured beauty, Jana Hunter stands out as a champion of homegrown Texas lo-fi. Her initial success has been, for the most part, due to her earlier releases with the hairy godfather of the "freak-folk" genre-Devendra Banhart. But she shouldn't be confused, despite her associations, as being like Banhart-whose sound is a bit more free-wheeling. You know, the type of stuff you might want to dance to after kicking back a few over the weekend Jana Hunters music, in polar contrast, is stripped down of many of the acoustical pony tricks and slowed [...]
In 1994, Jana Hunter was a 16 and a violinist in the Greater Youth Orchestra of Fort Worth (Texas.) This quickly and naturally led to smoking cigarettes, hanging out in a VW Van and joining local hippie band McGillicutty. Hilariously, this group soon disbanded due to creative differences, and Hunter began in earnest the pursuit of solo writing, performing at local open mics and house parties. Arlington, TX (Jana's hometown) is a depressing place, and Hunter took that sentiment to New York (1996) and eventually Houston (1998), writing dark, severe and beautiful songs that more and [...]

Sandro Perri - Love Is Real Well, folks and friends, you may have noticed a certain reverence for the light-footed songs of Sandro Perri around these parts, my exhortations to get out there and buy his two previous EPs, which I adored, and now he has an album! and this album manages to be wonderful and easily matches those beloved little records, while taking a not-too-inconsiderable step away from them. Part of what I loved about this music, from the whispered steady rhythm of ' Dreaming ' to the smoky sadness of ' Double Suicide [...]

carrion Fuck It Tapes has released an extremely limited, one-sided 12" EP from the suddenly prolific Jana Hunter , entitled Carrion . The EP includes a few new, unreleased songs, as well as a couple demos for songs that eventually ended up on Hunter's fantastic There's No Home LP . The two tracks that lead off Carrion (" Paint a Babe " and " A Goblin, a Goblin ") have become [...]

Jana Hunter 's new cd There's No Home has been in constant rotation since about a week ago. I caught both of her shows here on Monday and recorded the acoustic show at Good Records . The videos didn't come out great, because of the mood lighting, but there were at least 3 other people who shot some video (including GvB ), so maybe their's turned out better. At any rate, both shows were excellent, in the tops for the year, and her cd is already [...]
Jana Hunter - Babies Jana Hunter looks to rebound from her unfortunate, highly-publicized stolen gear disaster with two shows tonight, a 6:30 in-store at Good Records followed by a performance at Rubber Gloves with Brooke Opie and OVEO. There's No Home , her second long player for Devendra Banhart's Gnomosong imprint, was written in part on Hunter's famous sailboat tour. Of all the memoralbe songs on Home , "Babies" is the poppiest and most accessible - light as air but somehow much more substantial. Brooke Opie is a talented artist [...]

The other night (Friday?) in Tucson a bunch of gear was stolen from the van of Jana Hunter & Castanets . "So, the story is, last night we played in tucson at solar culture. afterward, we loaded our stuff up, went downtown, had a drink, and went to a house to crash on the floor. en route, we damaged a door, making it such that the door won't close and such that eventually, before we return [...]

jana hunter handmade her lo-fi dreamy recordings until one night she played a show with devendra banhart and soon after, he signed her unto his own personal label gnomonsong . the way jana makes music is simple; she knows how to write lyrically and musically. her second full length 2007 release, there's no home was created in two weeks at a friend's house in houston, texas. without overstepping any [...]
Indie singer-songwriter Jana Hunter adds to the "Weird America" tradition on her mature second album.
