When Jandek took the stage in the Menil Collection foyer, what would he play? What would he do? What would he look like? Those were the questions buzzing through the crowd of art patrons, st... Continue reading "Saturday Night: Jandek at the Menil Collection" >

With the internet comes a wealth of knowledge. In a matter of minutes, you can become an expert on anything. It's made the phrase "I don't know" mostly unnecessary and practically obsolete. If you're at a computer or have a smartphone within reach (you probably do), then you do know. You know everything. This giant spider web of access to information has had a clear impact on the celebrities of the music world and how we, being the sea of leeches that we are, feed off of them. In the past, artists could get away with [...]
Feeling slightly better this morning (my fever broke in the middle of the night, which is always a weird feeling - waking up in a pool of your own sweat but cooler and somewhat relieved) I donned my Sunday Best and drove out to Topanga State Park for my dear friends Fawn and Brian's wedding. [...]
There is something concise about newly formed projects that are pieced together from other bands, they know what they want from their sound. To that effect, Brooklyn's Dive is made up of Beach Fossils guitarist Cole Smith, Devin Ruben Perez. Andrew Bailey and ex-Smith Westerns drummer Colby Hewitt. Influences could canvas an entire avant-garde/post-punk section at your neighborhood record store, but I'll try to break it down. The band namely mentions the seminal krauts Can for the steadfast, percussing beat though I'm sure Faust would have something to say about this as well, ringing guitar tones included. The vocals are heavily effected and [...]
been listening to jandek this week. mainly the glasgow discs, six and six, chair beside a window. he's my favourite musical myth. a detuned santa clause. and nobody divides a room quite like him. that's what i dig. mostly. and the jandek on corwood documentary. talking heads try explaining a fella we/they never see or hear. if he hadn't shown up for real real in town all those years ago i'd've assumed he was a dream. or an elaborate prank... it's all on youtube, shittily compressed, but you should get the real real disc. [...]

Deans Wells is a self-professed purveyor of scuzzpop. He is prolific. He aspires to the "outsider music" of Houston atonal folk/blues artist jandek . As the capstan shafts , he produces imaginative fuzz rock with monolithic vision, playing most instruments himself (and I'm certain providing a watchful eye over necessary collaborators – i.e. the "real drummer" that appears on this record). The most obvious comparison is Guided by Voices , and while capstan shafts does bear hallmarks of lo-fi pop, inexplicable quasi-British accent, and outlandish song titles (e.g. 'porn name equations', 'she's kind empires'), the [...]
[What a strange and wonderful batch of shows this first weekend of 2011 offers. It's even Dave Matthews' birthday on Sunday, so celebrate responsibly ...] Top 5 weekend outings: ► It's a long story involving a broken back, Enrique Iglesias, and time in Australia with Ben Harper and in Russia with Cossacks, but Scott Thomas and Ringside are back. The band's first album since 2005, "Lost Days," is coming out Jan. 25, featuring contributions from myriad heavy hitters including Harper, Ozomatli, Brian Bell of [...]

Did you know that Jandek, who famously didn't show his face for the first 25 years of his career as a recording musician, is performing on Saturday in Irvine? FMLY friends Acrobatics Everyday hosting the now-blossoming former recluse's first Southern California performance after Sam Farzin wrote the man a postcard on a whim. Jandek called Farzin after receiving the postcard, and asked for "a drummer that 'hits very hard but not very jazzy' and a bassist that could play 'very droney.'" Farzin recruited Mike Watt to play bass and Health's BJ Miller for drums. At 7:30 pm [...]

Jandek, the representative of Corwood Industries , is performing in the Southern California megaregion (population 28.5 million) for the first time since he started releasing sociopathic music some 32 long and scary years ago. Despite his record-store culture, outsider-musician cult status, he has rarely played shows, choosing to communicate with the world through his infamous Corwood Industries PO Box and over 60 self-released albums. The show is set to take place at the University of California in the City of Irvine, a centrally planned community designed by the Irvine Company and its Republican chairman Donald Bren, the wealthiest real [...]

Friends, Invalids, Basement-dwelling agoraphobics, lend me your ears! It's time for another Sunday Mix Tape, and have I ever got "the goods" for you. You've probably been asking yourselves why I am not posting daily MP3s anymore, or why the treasures from my collector's slum have been few and far between these past few weeks. The reason is, I've been advised to watch what I post in regards to the music I often share here. Cryptic, yes, but I am not really one to test boundaries. So until further notice there might be less music than many of you click [...]
For all their grand, benevolent statement and intentions utopian societies are rarely looked upon with favor by the wider populace. The Oneida Community of the mid and latter 19th century New York State was hardly an exception. The Community was founded on John H. Noyes' theology of Perfectionism, a form of Christianity with two basic [...]
So what's bigger, a group we can't wait to dig our hands into or a group that's already created their magic over the last 10 years? We'll go with the latter as Zero 7 comes ... Long live the weekend, the weekend is here. And it´s gonna be another wild one... My iPod shuffle function picks the tunes, and we´ll just have to wait and see what comes up. Ready, set, go. Let´s get this show on the road with some intense blues from the inimitable Robert Pete Williams. Recorded live in Angola Prison , where the guitarist was doing time for fatally shooting a (white) man in what was probably self-defence. "Some got six months, but me and my buddies got a lifetime here..." These ´59 [...]
Between the signing of a new record contract , the release of The Eternal , a supporting global tour , and a broken wrist , 2009 has been quite the eventful year for Sonic Youth . But as the band revealed in a newly published interview with the BBC (via TFB ), we haven't seen anything yet. According to guitarist Lee Ranaldo, Sonic Youth's 2010 plans will include the recording of another new studio album, the release of a DVD featuring footage from the band's recent [...]

If you're in the Portland, OR area, you may want to have your credit card ready for this: Jandek, the Houston-based singer/songwriter who released dozens of some of the most unusual records to date without making a public appearance for almost three decades, will be joined onstage by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore for a one-off gig at the Hollywood Theatre next April. The show has been organized by Jackpot Records, the indie label behind Jandek's Portland Thursday , a live album from the same Hollywood Theatre stage that features Quasi's Sam Coomes on bass [...]

Things have been pretty good around here. The music has been flowing like Ciroc at a Diddy party, but it's been a while since I posted something truly weird. If you come here often, you know that while I'm sometimes entertained by the latest MTV-worthy videos and radio friendly hits, I also have an appetite for the twisted, the strange, and the unique. That being said, it's time to pull the trigger on a weapon that I've been storing in my arsenal for a long time - The Jandek Post. I've actually given you a taste for Jandek [...]
