And that means this is yet another weekend I won't get to indulge my fondest fantasy - to sit around and do nothing - and that it's time for another dog's breakfast of a festival preview post. Very Nice - go sign up and pick up the 4 tracks! Laundromatinee has their Great Lake Swimmers session posted as well. Hit them up for some of the video [...]

With vocals that pang of Cat Power and a wink-and-a-nod to Nancy Sinatra , this song plays with the perfect combination of sultry blues, and sex that begs for repeat plays. Jane Vain and the Dark Matters debut album, Love Is Where the Smoke is , is highly recommended and can be found on Rectangle Records .

by Herohill

For a debut record, Calgary's Jane Vain and the Dark Matter really have a good understanding of the sounds they want to create. Love is Where the Smoke is uses minimal (although surprisingly poppy at times) arrangements that allow Jamie Fooks vocals to push to the forefront. At the same time the band knows exactly when to jump in with well timed support the band gives to bring out all of her many strengths. It's incredibly focused for a debut and really rewards multiple listens. I know that sounds awfully PR-y, but it [...]

Jane Vain & The Dark Matter are so excited about their new record - Love Is Where The Smoke Is , out January 22 - that they're embarking on possibly the most foolish thing a Canadian band can do: a cross-country tour in the dead of Winter. If they manage to make it to Ontario, they'll play two shows in Toronto - February 7 at the Drake Underground and February 10 at Sneaky Dee's which, being a Sunday, will be a [...]

by Atoms 4 Peace

Jane Vain & the Dark Matter are getting ready to release their first full length album, Love is Where the Smoke Is. The songs on this album are delicate and genuine. There sound is one filled with synthesizers, steady beats, and a guitar that lingers in the background. Jamie Fooks' voice is breathy and seductive. The best way that I could describe her voice would be to mix Emily Haines with Fiona Apple. Throughout the album, Fooks' melodies weave in and out through the overlapping sounds. This album is incredibly well-written and played. [...]

Don't worry, I still have a fond place in my heart for all that is good and true with Canadian music-- and I'm making room especially for this new chanteuse, Jane Vain. Accompanied by her band, The Dark Matter, what they do for unrequited love is sort of like what Emily Haines and The Soft Skeleton do my mental well being. Which kinda makes sense: Soft Skeleton! Meet Dark Matter! Oh, mind, body, and spirit. We are aiming for anatomical correctness here. Catchy name aside, it doesn't hurt that this group is really, really [...]

by speed of dark

I'm stepping out from my usual alternative rock rut to share a mix I'm making as a Christmas gift. These songs lean into R&B, soul, and pop--which I am not usually very fond of--with a touch of electronica thrown in. As always, I have my own little alternative twist on the theme and a definite California flavor. This is meant to be kind of a party mix. I mean the kind of party where people stand around in small groups, sipping smoky merlot and nibbling brie on crostini, while discussing movies and politics. This [...]

Jain Vain is the existential outlet for singer/songwriter/producer Jamie Fooks. Their debut album, Love Is Where The Smoke Is , due out in January 2008 on Rectangle Records , was recorded & produced in Fooks' basement.
