The meme below has been circulating around one of my music forums, and rather than be the millionth person to post it there, I decided to transport it over here. I only do these when I think a good one crops up, so enjoy it. 1. Song from the last record bought/downloaded [legally]: Michael Jackson - Billie Jean [ iTunes ] [yes, the last album I legitimately paid money for was Thriller ] 2. Blues: The Animals - House of the Rising Sun [ iTunes ] [...]

Attention.

"Hallelujah" !!!! comme dirait Jeff Buckley (chanson pouvant intégrer le TOP 10 des "Sadest Songs in the World").

I didn't realize this until today, but Janis Joplin's birthday was Saturday. Had she lived, she would have been 65. I found a story in the online Houston Chronicle about a celebration in Port Arthur, the city not too far southeast of Houston where Joplin was born and raised. (I'd link the story for you, but I can't find it now. Here's an AP story instead.) I made a trek down to Port Arthur once, not too long after I moved to Houston in 1998. Not knowing how long we would be living there, the [...]

The weather in Austin today was fantastic, sunny, warm, and blue skies at 77 degrees. It was the perfect time to cruise around town with the windows down and feed some good tunes into the stereo. I burned a disc a few weeks ago with a whole bunch of stuff that I intended to listen to at some point, and one part of it was this Janis Joplin bootleg that someone put together and labeled "The Rarest Pearls. " What I enjoy most about it is the fact that everything is stripped down and basic, void of any studio trickery [...]

The spirit of Thanksgiving Day is unique amongst holidays in the U.S. As our friend and long time rider, Greg , pointed out; Thanksgiving is the rare holiday that has not been overly commercialized. It has remained a day of humble reflection and gratitude as originally conceived. But, that joyous celebration of grace and kinship comes to an abrupt halt not long after the dishes have been washed and put away. Beginning as early as midnight, eager shoppers across the United States huddle in long lines awaiting the unbelievable bargains that herald the start of the next [...]

the details of cat power's much anticipated second covers album (well, it's almost a full covers album) were revealed yesterday & it appears that chan is sticking with the smooth memphis sound that worked so well for her on her last outing...all the song choices seem inspired, especially the ones from george jackson, james brown & lee clayton...she's also included a beautiful track off dylan's born again classic slow train coming to pair up with her own tribute to the world's greatest living songwriter (should be pretty easy to figure out which song that is) & [...]
Since around 2005 I've been a major advocate of new music. My hard disk has vast quantities of music from post 2001. But deep down, I'm a fan of classic rock and pop. Music from the 50's, 60's and 70's was my staple until very recently. That, and the quality pop from the 80's and 90's. Recently I've been returning to my musical roots. Interestingly, much of this old music was discovered recently. But somehow these songs get filed away as classics, and acquire much of the warmth of the songs I heard before I could even speak. [...]
This Wednesday lots of hippies old and new will celebrate the 38th anniversary of Woodstock . It took place on August 15-18th 1969 in Bethel, New York, 50 miles from the "real" Woodstock. I wasn't there. I was at overnight camp that summer, barely 11 years old. I remember my counselor Joey took his days off to go and came back completely crazy and turned our bunk on to The Who. If I Was A Carpenter - Tim Hardin Santana - "Soul Sacrifice" [...]
On August 25th Ruta Maya will be hosting a hoot night in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love . 21 local bands will each perform 2-3 songs of their own choosing from the year of 1967, while also performing one song from their own collection, in the spirit of the Monterey Pop Festival. There will be live sounds from the Summer of Love from 4 pm until 3 am, with beer and barbeque, and a portion of the $8 cover will be donated to the Roky Erickson Trust. [...]

Just in case my opinion of Grace Potter & the Nocturnal isn't clear, read what I've said about them here , here , here , here , here , and finally here . Get the picture? In the 14 months or so of writing this blog, more posts have been dedicated to Grace and company than any other band. With that [...]
