You may not have heard of Jessie James' music just yet, so I wanted to give you a proper introduction. Jessie composed her first song at the young age of nine and she cites Christina Aguilera and Janis Joplin as influences in her music. Watch her new video for "Wanted", which she just debuted on MySpace: Wanted You can really [...]
Well here it is folks... your moment of zen. Via Tim. Oh Rick. Ohhh Rick. Happy spring people. Don't do drugs!

Nina Simone was a Bee Gees fan, and interpreted no less than four of their songs in the late sixties. Nina Simone first sang the Bee Gees on ' Nuff Said , a live album recorded at the Westbury Music Fair (in upstate New York) on April 7, 1968. This was three days after the assassination of Martin Luther King, and Simone, who was especially intolerant of social injustice, was surely livid over his untimely death. The opener to her act, "In The Morning" is fairly sunny- [...]
Back when I used to get up on stage and squawk out solos at pop concerts and talent shows, I liked to do Bette Midler songs. Somewhere in the family archives is my mortifying rendition of "Wind Bene... Continue reading "Wanna star in a local production of The Rose?" >

Yellow roses weren't the only flowers sprouting in Texas in the sixties. Psychedelic music found a hospitable home in the state's fertile soil.
TRAIN: I was in the middle of a Captain Planet marathon the other day when I thought to myself, "I should combine posting powers with someone so I can finally use those rings I bought that look like a musical note when you put them together." Seeing as though my ...

Is Peaches getting...serious? Am I... okay with that? From the likes of this new single off the upcoming album, I Feel Cream , it sure seems so. Replacing hardcore smut with a bit of rocker strut, Peaches commands her way through her cleanest strummer since "Operate." Without getting too overly praising, I'm getting a little bit of a Janis Joplin sort of vibe with this one. Anyway--this is perfect "first single" material; not quite powerful enough to be appreciated as a track in its own right, [...]

Today is February 6, which would've been Thurl Ravenscroft's 95th birthday. Around here, we call it Saint Thurl's Day. (You'll recall, I'm sure, that Thurl is the patron saint of She'll Grow Back.) You can find a LOT of Thurl's stuff here and here , thanks to WFMU and Bob Purse, but this post contains a few of the other things in my collection. In keeping with the theme of covering Etta James and Janis Joplin , Thurl does one of each, [...]
by cheryl!! SANTA!! MARIA!! Seven years ago I was involved in a car accident. The whole thing looked a lot worse than it was, but I bring it up time and again because it's the most interesting thing that's ever happened to me. I was stuck in the hospital for four days. I spent most of the time staring up at the ceiling and feeling sorry for myself. While the injuries were minor, the incident still sends shivers down my spine. [...]

You may never be as rocking as John Lennon or as punk as Iggy Pop but you can still wear the same t-shirts as them! InvisibleLimb.net and WornFree.com are teaming up to bring you a special Valentine's Day giveaway! Two lucky winners will receive one Worn Free shirt of their choosing and hopefully a hug or two from their significant other (although we'd love to, Invisible Limb can not provide the hugs- it's a legal thing). Worn Free features designs originally [...]

I've been digging on the upcoming Watchmen movie since the first trailer came out in July in front of The Dark Knight . I was prepared to firebomb 20th Century Fox's offices in response to their morally and artistically bankrupt attempt to block the film's release via lawsuit (thankfully the suit was at most a modest success). I've got my calendar cleared on March 6th when the film comes out. So when the first song from the soundtrack came out earlier this week, I dove on it. The track in question is My Chemical Romance's [...]
![Wikipedia Says "Move Over" To "30 Rock"-Inspired Jokesters [Web 2.no]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1478150_lg.jpg)
Last night's 30 Rock not only made Dan sweat , it caused the folks at collective-knowledge-gone-stai d Wikipedia to go "hmmm" over Janis Joplin's entry . See, one of the episode's running gags involved the show-within-a-show's comedy writers editing that page on the user-generated encyclopedia in hopes of making the well-meaning egotist actress Jenna do things like eat cats and fear toilets as she prepped for what could be the role of her lifetime. Of course, the site's editors threw the "Watch out!!" switch right away: "heads up for vandalism. 30 rock tonight is about comedy writers [...]

Today marks my 27th birthday. Growing up, a friend and I would always talk openly about the Forever 27 club, a group of rock musicians who died all at the age of 27. We were intrigued by the mystery of how Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison died within a ten month period of one another, and were devastated and shocked by the early untimely death of Kurt Cobain. We believed deeply in those lyrics from an old Billy Joel song that maybe "only the good die young" and figured it was our mission to become [...]

I usually tend to stay away from blues songs on Mondays: I spend so much time with "Stagger Lee", and so many blues songs have been recorded by literally hundreds of people. But apparently people loved the post with Janis covering Etta James , so I thought I'd let Etta return the favor, and while we're at it you can all learn about Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton ( Wiki ). Those of you who are rock geeks will already know that she recorded "Hound Dog" three years before Elvis, and you may even know [...]

The second season of HBO's comedy series Flight Of The Conchords premieres this Sunday at 10 PM. If the new season is anything like season one it will be filled with Bret and Jemaine's hilarious struggles in the big city as they try to make it as a band. For those of you who found that they couldn't get their songs out of their heads, you're in luck as you'll now be able to download a new song each week via iTunes the day after the show airs. [...]
