Known to others as the critically acclaimed corporate ran behemoth festival, South By Southwest to me seems as the cornerstone of Austin living: a good time marked with an excess of cheap beer, BBQ, and (for the most part) good music. So as the nostalgic scent of BBQ, sweat, and 6th street greeted me to a very bustling downtown, I knew it was none other than that time during SXSW. Yet since it was already closing in on 8 PM, and I was stranded on 6th with nothing other than a half-filled water bottle, my phone, and a squashed booklet [...]

The annual Canadian Music Week was held this past week in Toronto, with the winners of their flagship award ceremony The Indies announced last night (23 March). Among the big hitters were Japandroids taking home the top prize of 'Album of the Year', Carly Rae Jepsen being handed 'Single of the Year' for her pop smash-hit 'Call Me Maybe' and Metric netting the 'Group of the Year' award. Cold Specks picked up 'Female Artist of the Year', while Deadmau5 and [...]
Filed under: News , Awards MMI Canadian Music Week's marquee CMW event, The Indies, took place last night with Japandroids snagging best album for Celebration Rock , Deadmau5 winning best live act and Metric taking home best group and best-selling independent album, Synthetica . But Vancouver pop-rockers Marianas Trench emerged as the big winners of the night with three awards: Video of the [...]
Within the context of punk and the ethos thereof, Brooklyn rabble-rousers Parquet Courts are an irrefutable, if irrefutably sublime paradox: they spew fast, harsh and sporadically acerbic power-punk , and yet they slur of Socrates splurging his guts out and expiring "in the fucking gutter." They too drink – they drink gallons just gone midday. Though it's wine they swig. Rosé, mostly. They've since hit the whisky. Of course the histories of punk are littered with a litany of learned types only too adept in pairing up abrasion with erudition. Whether that be [...]

My SxSW overload begins with a show that happened at my favorite venue, The Mohawk . It was a limited entry kind of deal, badge and wristband only, no wristbands even got in - Iggy Pop and the Stooges with Japandroids . I had requested access to the NPR showcase featuring Nick Cave and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs . To think, SxSW has become the kind of event where seeing Iggy in a thousand person venue is a backup plan? Odd. Read on for thoughts and pics... [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Dan Reilly There are thousands of artists in Austin for SXSW , and I'll be seeing a lot of them. This year, I decided to challenge myself and write about every band I see, no matter how much of their set I caught, or even if I saw/heard them unintentionally. Most of these "reviews" are pieced together from my illegible notebook scribblings, but that's all I've got. [...]

The 'Gum crew got into Austin last night and made the most of SXSW Music's slow ramp-up into full on noise-overwhelming-the-signal mode. The options were limited, but with deep lineups: Viceland and Pitchfork's show at the Mohawk were the primary dueling points. We caught some stuff at each, and had photographers there and also at the FADER Fort for Delorean and Baauer, and a one-off with FlyLo, and Warner Sound's show with Action Bronson and yr boy Macklemore. Photos of all of that above, words on words on words on words below: Read More...

Before shifting its focus to music, SXSW encompasses Internet/technology and film. As you might expect, the tech portion has grown in importance in the last few years and those here for that part of SXSW cast mocking glances in my direction whenever I make use of my Blackberry. This Tuesday afternoon, it's interesting to walk around downtown Austin as the festival starts to shift its focus to its noisiest and rowdiest component. The gigantic Dominos stage that irked Father John Misty last year is in the process of being built and many of the outdoor stages still look [...]

So Dan and I kicked off our SXSW 2013 by hitting up the Vice party with our friend Kelly. Well, back up - we actually kicked off our SXSW 2013 by driving downtown around noon to pick up our wristbands for Hype Hotel. We ended up circling around looking for parking for about an hour, then giving up and heading back to the house. I don't know what made us think we could find parking downtown during SXSW, but clearly that didn't work out for us. Our second attempt at getting downtown was much more successful, [...]

photos by Amanda Hatfield , words by Andrew Sacher Divine Fits at VICELAND at SXSW 2013 I'll spare you the boring details of my day's worth of delayed flights, but after finally landing in Austin at 10 PM last night (3/12), I darted over to VICELAND (which, for those of you in Austin, is located on 401 E Cesar Chavez, right across from the Austin Convention Center) and got there a few songs into Wavves ' set. [...]
I never got around to mentioning, but for anyone who looks at my mixes over at 8tracks , I finally got around to a "Best Of 20123 mix and put it up there, instead of the Opentape thing I had been doing for the last few years that I doubt anyone ever used. Here's the tracklist for 2012 : 01. Moses Gold - Powder and Blood 02. Grimes - Oblivion 03. Serengeti feat. Yoni Wolf - Geti Life 04. Sean Born - Pour Out Liquor 05. Divine Fits [...]
The shining city lights of New Orleans were momentarily eclipsed by the neon haze of thousands of LED lights and the bobbing glow sticks of a perpetually dancing crowd on the banks of the Mississippi River. This was Buku Music + Art Project : the eclectic two-day festival that took over the Mardi Gras World facility last weekend. While gates opened around four in the afternoon each day, the party lasted until three in the morning. Regardless of the ground's close quarters, each stage felt as if it belonged to an entirely different festival. There was something [...]
