[mp3] Jason Boland & The Stragglers: "Somewhere Down in Texas" How many times have you heard "I like everything except rap and country." If you take country music at face value, that cliched adage probably doesn't miss the mark by much. Yet, because there are so many mainstream "hat country" artists muddying the waters, it's extremely easy, almost a guarantee, that you will skip over the new album Rancho Alto from relative unknown (even for this country fan) Jason Boland & The Stragglers . This is an album [...]

Admittedly, I can't write about whiskey with nearly the grace of Romeo. Hell, when you ask for nose my only answer is, " I dunno. It smells like whiskey. " I'm not sure I've ever actually tasted "charcoal" or any nutty undertones in my whiskey, though I will readily admit some are quite sweeter than others. Perhaps my whiskey palate has been damaged or so trained to ignore the bad that comes from bottom shelf bourbons that it's almost mute. Either way, I wanted to drop a few lines about a new whiskey from Jim Beam called " [...]

I gave AIV the train song idea and ended up not being to get my shit together and my head above water at work to do the post and I was a little disappointed by that. So I decided that this week I'd drop another classic country and western song genre on you guys and write the post before I told AIV the idea so I would get to post this time. This week is Truckin' Songs. My daddy was a trucker when I was born and somewhere there is a picture of me knee high to him standing beside [...]

So we got a suggestion on Twitter to do a Top 5: Drinking Songs and I wanted to run with it but there are so many different kinds of drinking songs it's hard to make a single list. So I am running with the suggestion but it ain't gonna be just one list. The week's list is all about those times in life when hearing song sent you over the edge and out to the bar. Be it too much stress and some song was that straw the broke the camel's back or you were in an awesome mood and [...]

I have always love road trips and from a very young age loved sitting in the back of the old station wagon in that flip up rear seat, facing traffic and digging whatever 8 tracks my dad would put in. I have a lot of good memories involving driving around Texas aimlessly with my best friend, trying to get lost but never managing it or driving three hours to just to prove to someone that some hole in the wall had the best BBQ. The spontaneous road trip was a staple of my life for a lot of years. It's [...]

Some days things just work together. While I was writing up the review of A Damn Good Ride I dropped by Jeremy Steding's website to look for his bio and such and found out he was playing in town that night. I grabbed a phone number off the site, made a call, and set up some time with him before the show. As luck would have it and one thing leading to another I wasn't as early as I wanted to be but since it was a Thursday night show there wasn't an opening act and [...]

So I was sitting around work yesterday sort of getting work done when Autopsy IV asked if I would consider being a contributor for 9b. Yeah, like that was going to take any consideration at all! So I played it cool and took about five minutes before answering and here I am. I figure most of you have seen my guest posts and the recent intro mixes that AIV has so kindly posted but probably have very little idea who the hell I am. I am an old Lucero message board hand who has been reading 9b since [...]

And if you're a Johnny Cash collector, the new 2-disc collection of material he did with George Jones should do you good. :: Alias , Resurgam (Anticon) :: [...]
