I covered a good chunk of what's going on this week on my show this past weekend, but a few things have been added to the concert calendar and I thought I'd once again give you a rundown of my day-by-day recommendations. With a few tunes to sample, of course. In my opinion local bands are the hottest in town this week, and if you can only hit one or two of these shows, I would definitely check out the WRVU Benefit with Turncoats and Bad Friend at [...]

Josh Rouse kicked off his current tour last night in Denver in support of his excellent new album Country Mouse, City House . I've been trying to catch Rouse live for over two years, but this was my first success - I very thoroughly enjoyed his unique fusion of soulful songwriter rock with elements of jazz, blues and funk, along with his velvety smooth voice. It was excellent and I highly recommend catching him when you can. The Bluebird was very full for a Tuesday night, with lots [...]

Having been in exile (pun!) from the life of the touring musician for a while, Arts & Crafts ter Jason Collett will be heading out in support of Josh Rouse for a few dates in September. He hasn't released any new material since 2006's Idols of Exile , though he did drop a digital-only EP of early material this past spring. Dates are as follows: September 18th, 2007 - Denver, CO - Bluebird Theatre September 19th, 2007 - Salt Lake City, UT - The Urban Lounge September 21st, 2007 - Bothell, WA [...]
Metric have (finally) just released their very first album (which was never released to begin with) - yes, that's right, Grow Up And Blow Away has finally hit the shelves . If you hadn't already downloaded it all (and even if you have), go out and pick it up! Next up would be Kevin Drew , as part of the "Broken Social Scene Presents..." series - personally, I'm most excited for the Brendan Canning album slated for a 2008 release. One of the most underrated out of the BSS camp; and I think the most [...]

I remember living in Toronto when Broken Social Scene's You Forgot it in People came out. It was the type of album that seemed to leak into the air. People were talking about it all over the city. Conversations with any music fan would invitably bend towards singing its praises. My roomate at the time brought it home soon after the hype started, and we were both blown away. It sounded like indie rock fiberboard...tiny pieces of bigger things tightly packed together and compressed until they took shape. It wasn't until later that [...]
I remember going to the DC Convention Center in 1991 to see Riddick Bowe fight Elijah Tillery. Bowe wasn't the title holder yet but was quickly rising through the ranks. As the hometown kid, he was the main event and we were pretty excited. However, the night turned upside down when the best boxer of the night was welterweight Sharmba Mitchell earlier in the evening. The Bowe fight turned into a debacle as Tillery started kicking Bowe after the first round bell which led to Tillery being disqualified which led to a [...]
Despite the fact that I will miss almost all of these shows I'm still going to tell you all what you should be doing if you're in New York this week. It's an excellent week full of fantastic live shows that you should not miss. I'm going to try to make it to two specific shows this week, but who knows if I'll be able to do that. Plus there's a couple of free shows this weekend I'd love to attend if work doesn't interfere. Anyway, make sure you're checking the regular sources because there's more going on than just [...]

What A weekend...it was F`n awesome to tell ya the truth...So lets get rolling...Friday night me and Patricia had VIP passes to see Phoenix @ The Mod Club ...I love the Mod Club , great sound, awesome design, good location, and not a bad seat in the house...and we were right in front... Phoenix took the stage at around 10 to a very patient, and small crowd. They played a majority of songs from their latest release, It`s Never Been Like That ...which was awesome... [...]
If somebody can tell a story, it's not all that important what it's about - if that wasn't so, nobody would bother to read Bukowski except for voyeuristic pleasure: if you write about temp work, drinking and getting beaten up by fancy men, make sure you have a strong style working for you. Hank did. But that's style over substance then, right? - No, it's style becoming substance, you can go and ask Philippe Djian about it. Not everyone can write about old academics who hook up with young janitors and sing paeans of praise [...]
I wouldn't say I'm a huge Rogue Wave fan but I like enough of their tunes to get me out to Higher Ground on a Monday night . Actually, the best part of the night is the stacked line-up. Even the undercard looks promising. Rogue Wave is a indie rock band out of Oakland with a bit of a folk-base to some of their songs. However, they certainly rock. This is not a folk show. They have a promotion similar to the one The New Year does for [...]
Three things triggered this post. First, I keep reading about the amazing Lollapalooza performance of Broken Social Scene . Second, Jason is touring the US with Rogue Wave , and third, I read a nice Jason Collett post on Aquarium Drunkard . I’ve been listening to Jason’s latest album, Idols of Exiles a lot lately, and I remembered Tyler had a great bootleg of his last Seattle show . I think the biggest strike against Jason’s last album, is the myriad [...]

Keeping track of the extended Broken Social Scene cadre and it's member's various solo projects (not too mention their related band's projects) can be an excercise unto itself, which is why it took me until early summer to give Collett's Idols of Exile a proper run. Released in February of 2006 Idols of Exile garnered warranted praise but seemed to quickly fade as the year went on. But hey, I had 3,000 miles of road ahead of me and stacks of albums I hadn't gotten to -- [...]
