Frank Yang Anyone who needs a case study in the effectiveness of avenues like commercials and soundtracks to boost a band's fortunes need look no further than The Submarines . On their last visit to Toronto in May 2008, despite having an excellent debut in Declare A New State under their belt and another fine record in Honeysuckle Weeks just released, they drew a crowd of about 50 people to their show at the Drake Undeground (or so I was told - I wasn't [...]

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead The Century of Self ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - "Isis Unveiled" from Austin Town Hall ..."In a way, they've crafted the perfect LP. Side one is full of a barrage of shear noise and pace. Side two is a slow drive down a carefully soundscaped highway. Either side surely can stand up on their own, both with lots of quality, but when thrown together, its a bit of an odd combination." [...]

Last week we wrote about Jason Isbell's upcoming album, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit. We're all looking forward to it here at TheFrontloader.com, and to celebrate this momentous occasion, here is a bootleg of Isbell, dating back to August 24, 2007. The sound quality is excellent here, as is the performance. A gem of this collection is his cover of Patterson Hood's song, "Assassin." Hood is, of course, one of the main singer/songwriters of The Drive-By Truckers, a band that Isbell once belonged to. [...]
Dan Auerbach - Keep It Hid Release Date: Feb. 10 Label: Nonesuch Rating: 90 ________ This is not a Black Keys sound-alike. On this solo debut, Auerbach's lack of a cohesive sound is the most surprisingly enjoyable part of this record. Country ballads give way to tremolo guitar fuzz, while elements of southern soul/R&B come and go. The album has a Muscle Shoals feel, with a modern [...]
In 2007 Jason Isbell left the Drive-By Truckers to pursue a solo career, and its been full steam ahead ever since. Isbell released his debut solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007 which was extremely well received and helped establish Isbell as an incredibly gifted songwriter and artist in his own right. On February 17th Isbell will be releasing his sophomore album, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit [...]

JASON ISBELL The ex-Drive By Trucker is doing fine by his lonesome, and along with the help of the 400 unit, they keep on keepin' on. By this, I mean, an extended tour that has the group making several Colorado visits in promotion of Jason's forthcoming album will be released via Lightning Rod Records Feb. 17th. The new album may have a different feel than what you would expect from Isbell.

Jason Isbell keeps on keeping on. Since leaving the Drive By Truckers, Mr. Isbell has been on the road for what seems like forever. Really. But for that I am thankful, I can't wait to see him March 6th here @ a place called the Basement. Should be the perfect fit for his bar room ballads and blues infused rockers. And even with all of the touring, he and is band The 400 Unit have still managed to write and record a new album. The self titled disc will be out this spring. Here is a beautiful song [...]
i am currently listening to the new isbell and the 400 unit record, seven-mile island , and i must contend that its everything that i wished sirens of the ditch was. sirens is a great record, dont get me wrong, but it was kind of a departure from what in my mind a jason isbell record should sound like. so far, in simple aka my terms, this is freakin awesome.. anyway, here be the first single "seven-mile island", via rcrdlbl. seven-mile island, the record, is due out on 2.17. [...]

Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit Lightning Rod Records Release Date: 02.17.09 Jason Isbell has seen a lot of miles in his twenty-nine years. Born and raised near Muscle Shoals, Alabama, he came up in the fertile scene that sprung up around FAME Studios , playing in local bands with any number of characters, including American Idol flash-in-the-pan Bo Bice . He arrived on most people's radar when he was scooped up by Athens, GA rock juggernaut Drive By Truckers as the third [...]

Band Of Horses 2008 turned out to be a good year in music, but it left me wanting more. I fully expect that 2009 will be strong. I'm extremely excited for the new Band Of Horses , Avett Brothers , Gorillaz , Dan Auerbach and Silversun Pickups albums. Thoughts? While by no means essential, Jason Isbell's live EP, recorded at Twist & Shout Records last year, provides an interesting document for those curious about Isbell's sound with his new band, The 400 Unit. Here's The 400 Unit's take on a DBT favorite. Previously: Aquarium Drunkard Presents :: Jason Isbell @ Spaceland Download: MP3: Jason Isbell [...]

So a few months ago my good friend who shall remain nameless (excepting his nickname, which is "Big'un") traveled on business to the city of Chicago. And I spent a few hours before that compiling music to make his trip more pleasant. It's certainly not a complete collection of songs about the city (as he points out, "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" is missing, and that one's just the tip of the iceberg). However, it is a nice collection of blues and indie songs that help to capture, in some small way, the soul of the city. In fact, [...]

Last weekend I met up with a friend of mine at the Mohawk for a little pre-Fun Fun Fun Fest action. On the bill for the night was an opening set by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, followed by Cracker, who haven't played a show in Austin for quite a while. I had no idea who Jason Isbell was beforehand as I've never really followed his previous band, the Drive-By Truckers. He joined them in 2001, and apparently had a big hand in their creative output over the last five or six years, which as far as [...]

It's been quiet around town for a few weeks, but it looks like this weekend will be making up for it. When it rains it pours, I guess, but it's better than sitting at home and watching pre-season football. Friday Night @ Skipper's Smokehouse: Jacksonville's own JJ Grey & Mofro bring their swamp-infused brand of front porch blues/soul music to the Skipperdome . I have never seen these guys live, but everyone I know who has is telling me [...]
