Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Among the songs performed Tuesday night as part of 'The Music of the Who ,' a two-hour charity tribute concert staged at New York City's Carnegie Hall, were two versions of the classic 'My Generation.' The first was a pleasantly offbeat a cappella blues rendition, complements of Bobby McFerrin . The second, a scorching punk take, ended with special guest Patti Smith ripping the strings from her guitar, urging, "Rise up and create a new f---ing world!" As [...]

Day 2-Voodoo Experience Festival, New Orleans, LA (10-31-09)-2511 , originally uploaded by BetweenLoveandLike . New Orleans has been having one ginormous party with Mardi Gras this past week, made even crazier I hear with the Saints winning the Superbowl. Fat Tuesday is always the pinnacle of this throwdown. I was slated to ride a float this past Saturday with the Krewe of Tucks but due to scheduling conflicts, I had to bow out (but next year baby, let me tell you what! I'll be there with bells on), so, [...]

It's Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday for you non-French speakers and if you're looking to get into the New Orleans spirit look no further than the Preservation the new album released today from the Big Easy's own Preservation Hall Jazz Band . Andrew Bird , who's among over 20 diverse artists recorded on the album, appears on the opening track "Shake It and Break It." With roots going back to the 1800's Preservation Hall has long been home to some of the finest [...]

Since leaving the Drive-By Truckers to pursue a solo career, Alabaman Jason Isbell has gone from strength to strength. His debut album, Sirens of the Ditch is a fantastic alt.country record, and one of the best albums of the 00s. Follow-up Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit is just as good, and 2010 should see the release of his third album (his second with the 400 Unit). He took the time out of his heavy touring schedule to answer a few questions for yours truly. Here's what he had to say... Your [...]

Muscle Shoals, Alabama singer/songwriter/guitarist Jason Isbell is currently recording demos for a new album that is scheduled to be released sometime during 2010. In a tweet on his twitter page yesterday Isbell said that he "cut some demos today" and that the next record would "certainly" be released during this year. He also said that it wasn't going to be as mellow as last year's Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit . Isbell started his career by joining alt. country/rock band Drive-By Truckers in 2001 and left in 2007, performing on Decoration Day , [...]
2009 — what a crapsuck of a year. Without overstating or getting into it, it was easily the worst since, well, high school at least and I am not sorry that it is over. If I ever needed an object lesson in saving power of music, this was it. Music was one of the few things that keep the year from being a complete personal disaster. I've read others claim that 2009 wasn't a great year for music. In one sense I agree: there were few great albums — albums good enough to be considered for regular rotation [...]
Enjoy his fabulous take on 'The Last Song I Will Write' in the feature below. MP3: Jason Isbell - Seven Mile Island

This was really hard for me this year. Spending more time with this project (i.e., the blog), intentionally listening to more music, and talking to more people about music, exposed me to more music in the past twelve months than I think I have ever heard in that same period of time in my [...]

Andy Willsher Okay, most inconvenient tour ever is probably a bit of an overstatement. From a logistical/routing point of view, The Clientele's upcoming jaunt across the pond in support of Bonfires On The Heath makes perfect sense - fly into New York, head south, west through Texas to California, up the west coast and back east along the 49th, cross the border for a couple Canadian dates, back down to New York and then home. But for me - and really, isn't [...]

#18 - No Fool for Trying by Madison Violet Madison Violet was one of my favorite new discoveries of 2009. I was completely unaware of the duo from Canada when their No Fool for Trying album showed up on Reviewshine's website (another one of my favorite things of 2009). It was one of the first albums I received and reviewed through Reviewshine , and I'm glad I took the time to give this one a listen... it's easily one of my favorite folk records of the year. In fact, they were recently [...]

Number 2 in my Best of 2009. Isbell could have got away with releasing his second album post DBT under his own name, but instead he chose to make a statement that this was more than a solo album and in subsequent interviews promoting the record Isbell was keen to make it clear that the 400 Unit, Jimbo Hart (bass, vocals), Browan Lollar (guitar, vocals) and Derry deBorja (keyboards) were more than a session band and although he had written all of [...]

( Photo by Jonathan Purvis ) As the end of the year/decade draws near, I've been pondering which items I want to include on my "Best of 2009" and "Best of the 2000s" lists. The Drive By Truckers will be on the decade list I'm sure, the question is which record to choose? I discovered them via a birthday present of A Blessing and A Curse a few years back but the true clincher was seeing lead singer Patterson Hood's passionate cover of Jim Carroll's "People Who Died" at [...]
