Covers are tricky thing -- remaining true to the spirit of the original while putting your own unique signature on it can be an interesting balancing act. To hear how it can be done, check out this version of the Terence Trent D'arby's 80's hit from Jason Spooner . Taken from his consistently fine album Sea Monster , "Wishing Well"'s punchy brass highlights and slinky guitar lines keep the original's funky foundation while putting a seamless folk/rock shuffle right on top. Official | Buy This is the kind of music I listen to on trains. During the kind of train rides where my face is nearly pressed against the plexi-glass staring out at leafless trees and the sad vision of run down houses that flash before my eyes, it is that desolate eastern landscape that makes me want to pack up and drive west at least four days out of the week. Anyway, this song is perfect for those train rides. "Breathing, on that window/put me [...]

As I noted earlier this week, we don't hold with ordered lists at year's end, preferring instead to recognize the diversity of greatness we hear and rediscover as part of an ongoing process. But in keeping with our ongoing mandate to bring you our subjective best in folk and acoustic coverage, in the hopes that you might pursue our recommendations and passalongs to support those artists directly, it seems fair to note which songs still remain high on our playlist, echoing through our head long after we introduced you to them through the pages of this blog. "I think we definitely unearthed some new territory with this record," says Maine singer/songwriter Jason Spooner of his latest album Sea Monster (Mishara). Downshifting from the primarily acoustic production aesthetic of his earlier works, Spooner's recently released Monster project, co-produced by Spooner and Jonathan Wyman, ramps up the a significant electric edge and percussive thrust, eliciting comparisons from Dire Straits to The John Mayer Trio to Blues Traveller. Spooner's impressive fretwork is a centerpiece of the album, a masterful workshop in guitar play that enhances but never gets in the way of the songs. [...]

"This multi-award winning New England-based songwriter discovered his father's collection of eight-track tapes as a child and never looked back. After early exposure to songwriter legends like Neil Young, Paul Simon, Jim Croce and Van Morrison along with Motown heavies like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight, Jason was inspired to start making the rounds on coffee house stages in his teens. Shortly thereafter, he spent time in Europe performing in folk & blues clubs and on the streets of London and around Spain". Sea Monster is the [...]

Our music library may be vast, but we've never claimed to be completists here at Cover Lay Down. There's always something missed or previously unheard, and always something new, too, released just in time to taunt us in the aftermath of a topical post. Serendipitous addenda come from fellow bloggers, readers, labels, artists and library visits into our welcoming ears and hands. From there, they make their way back to you via our (Re)Covered features, wherein we share new and newly-rediscovered songs that dropped into our laps just a bit [...]

Jason Spooner is an artist you'd go see every Tuesday with a bunch of friends. Or maybe his set is the one you'd walk by at a Folk Festival and actually stop and listen. He's got a lot of different styles, all of which end up in that hippie-friendly mishmash of acoustic, funk, organ. The thing that helps him stand out from every other person trying that style is the nice flow of his vocals and strength of his lyrics. He never views his words as an after thought, and uses nice wordplay and a sense of humor when [...]
