...something new...went to NPR to listen to the new Sharon Van Etten but it did not feel like the right record for me at that moment, so I clicked off after a few songs...switched to Heartless Bastards' Arrow , since it was there on the NPR page—a band I've never heard before but this was nice enough, though a day later I don't really remember it other than the singer had a compelling and strong voice...was reminded that I wanted to hear First Aid Kit's new album —a band I've never heard of until hearing "Emmylou" [...]

"I love you," says Jason Urick , shifting closer to you, his bushy beard tickling your chin. You don't know what to say. You've only known him for forty minutes. In that time you listened to an album made up of only five tracks. It was an album of electronica. Ambient, actually. You're having a tough time deciding whether you liked it. As with most music of the genre, if it succeeds at creating a certain "ambiance", the listener should presumably be too enraptured by it, and the ensuing feeling of relaxation, to provide any real [...]

JUNE by Youth YOUTH, CHAIRS MISSING, STILL CAVES ( http://www.portlandmercury.com /portland/rontoms/Location?oid =271996, 600 E Burnside) Hopping on that ubiquitous surf rock bandwagon, Youth's music possesses the litheness characteristic of their namesake. With reverb dials turned far to the right, guitars and voices shimmer and resound in a way that, when paired with the right accoutrements, could induce a summer day. All one needs are some raw oysters, white wine, and no qualms about jacking up the heat. Youth spent the fall touring the West Coast with Typhoon and Wild Ones, [...]

Verbatim, from the mind of Portland newcomer and unconventional sound artist Jason Urick regarding his beguiling new record I Love You for Thrill Jockey: "This record was recorded and pieced together during a very transitional period of my life. A lot was in flux in regards to location on the planet and people and relationships within said planet. My feeling regarding these changes had a tendency to fluctuate between very excited and confident with uncertainty and alternatingly unsure and nervous, sometimes fluctuating between the two rapidly from second-to-second. [...]
Jason Urick is signed to Thrill Jockey Records with an album, I Love You , coming out later this month on the 24th. He's got a new video for the song "Ageless Isms" supporting the record as well. Check it out above.

I found a lot of great music this month, more than I can (or wish to) fit on this playlist. I purposefully ignored everything I featured in this post , also all discovered this month and highly recommended (and ps, some of these songs come from the same sources). Eva Schifter A photo from the Xhurch's more conventional Nativity scene in 2010. The Alien Nativity opens today at the Xhurch , the arts space run by Matthew Henderson in a repurposed church in NE Portland. Basically, it's an ongoing art installation with its basis in the Nativity scenes traditionally mounted during Christmas. Only this time, it's an ALIEN nativity. What this precisely means is anyone's guess. Alien Nativity begins today, Tuesday, December 20 and will be open from 5 to 9 pm each night through December 25. [...]

Jason Urick is set to release his newest LP, I Love You, January 24th via Thrill Jockey. You can check out a track from the album, which is a five minute experimental psychedelic tapestry of warbled sonic shapes and swirling melodic patterns, that is more akin to an auditory meditation than a pop song. This is The Crying Song. Press play, close your eyes, and explore the collective unconscious. Jason Urick; The Crying Song

I hate this time of year where you leave for (school/work) and it's dark outside. When it's time to go home, it's dark outside. Coincidentally, it's the time of year when all four sports are being played. Football, basketball, hockey, and baseball. This year's MLB playoffs don't have my favorite team, but that doesn't mean I can't root for somebody. Anybody besides the NY Yankees to win the World Series. So I decided to stick with the NL West and root for the SF Giants. I like their strong pitching staff, but their hitting isn't as consistent [...]

Nice people from Thrill Jockey posted two new Future Islands remixes, both by Jason Urick . Stream/download the remixes of 'Tin Man' and 'In Evening Air' below. In other news, the band has recently released an EP with acoustic versions of four songs, get it here . Tin Man (Jason Urick remix) In Evening Air (Jason Urick remix) Future Myspace .

I still can't stop listening to Future Islands whose album, In Evening Air is making a strong late season push to make our year end list of favorite albums. The band hits the road with Lonnie Walker next week behind a split 73 vinyl release . We've got two Future Island tracks remixed by friend and fellow Baltimore native Jason Urick . Top notch. Check them out below. MP3: Future Islands - "Tin Man" (Jason Urick [...]

This two song single from influential Baltimore noise maker Jason Urick continues forth with his digital molding and creation of abrasive yet strangely soothing sound collages. The former Wzt Hearts member has certainly come up with a winning formula ever since breaking off and delving into solo work and this single is another bright display of his talents. The a-side "This is Critical" is a harsher journey into his electronic experiments with a bit of a reoccurring techno beat looping beneath a sheet of electro fuzz. It probably would [...]

Ethereal never sounded so damaged. Here's six hard minutes, the B-side of Jason Urick's latest output, "Invisible Map", a track off his upcoming 7-inch, This Is Critical, out July 20 on Fan Death Records. There's something high and holy about the melodic entrances into this slow moving underwater beast, like the angels are blasting their vuvuzelas at the gulf oil spill and parting the waters so that we can see the monsters that have gestated beneath. Or call it one way to cure your constipa...

Four Tet: There is Love in You I've been a big Four Tet fan since it was considered a Fridge side project and have loved everything I've heard Kieren Hebden do. Rounds is his best, still, and Pause and Everything Ecstatic are excellent as well. When he released the Ringer EP last year I was glad to see Hebden stretching into new territory, even if more overtly danceable music veers away from where my tastes typically lie. I really liked that EP anyway, and I like a lot of [...]
