Filed under: Around the World As Luaka Bop celebrates 21 years of bringing crucial music from far-flung locales to mainstream global attention -- sounds from Brazil to Bollywood, from Africa to Okinawa -- with a compilation CD, 'Twenty First Century Twenty First Year,' label president Yale Evelev wants to get a jump on the next 21. To that end, he's been out in the field tracking down fresh, undiscovered sounds from intriguing cultures. On one trek not long ago, he found himself having to navigate some odd circumstances just to experience [...]

A duo of art school post-grads from Rhode Island combine sampling with live instrumentation to create cheap, yet catchy, beats and breaks. I was turned on to them last winter after hearing the song ' Flutey Flakes ', which is really good, but I later discovered that their work is very hit-or-miss; here are a couple of the hits: Javelin - Leonard pt. VI [...]
Ever throw a lit bottle rocket up so it takes off in mid air? This is kinda like that. Except the report is just a teenie bit bigger. An oldie but goodie, The "Javelin" Launcher vs 45 Ton Russian Tank. (via Digg )

Here's a post from my friend Tim Ortopan: I am not cool and as I write this I realize that it is pretty likely that I have never been cool, but I think I know what it looks like and I know this fact: Matt Rickle is cool. I first met him in the summer of 1998 when we both worked at the same movie theater; he was an usher and I worked behind the concession stand. We talked about music and he once even made me a mix cd; that was it for me &mdash: [...]
:: If you're planning on being at Reading or Leeds this year, Kings of Leon will give you some bang for your buck . Or at least that's what the band is telling everyone. :: You can pre-order the new Hold Steady two-disc live CD/DVD with a limited-edition shirt and button set . I still can't decide if I like them or not. It's been years for me, and the jury is still out. But I'm leaning toward yes these days. :: Neko Case recently dropped [...]

I begin this fashionably late Mag Munday with a delicious B-side :) It's Youthmovies , and it's the wonderful ' After The Kicking K '. Exploding with bursts of snare and brass, before churning out its big thick bass-line, pounding away. The song carries you into a lull of dreamy post-rock, carefully building into the second half of the song, with soaring brass and gentle guitar work. I'm glad I discovered this song, tucked away as a b-side of 'The Naughtiest Girl Is A Monitor', it's one of my favourites now! :D Mp3: [...]

I have to suspend my hatred for all things Michigan (I am originally a Buckeye, after all) when it involves good bands. And such was the case for the Michigan Bailout Tour stop in Louisville - which included Javelins , The Hard Lessons and My Dear Disco - I couldn't hold their Wolverine nature against them. Javelins - Heavy Meadows The Hard Lessons - See and Be Scene [...]
from Thousands of bands will be performing next week in Austin and the relatively unknown band Javelins is one of them. Their music video from their debut album Heavy Meadows is pretty spectacular. It's set in a Natural History Museum with the band members playing amongst the bones and stuffed animals. Definitely the Monday macabre moment.

When I listen to The Word Play , it's obvious from the get-go that these dudes are part of the Suburban Sprawl family. They just have the angular pop sensibility the SubSprawl roster seems to share. And speaking of the SubSprawl family, I'll be seeing Javelins tomorrow night at the Vernon Club. The Word Play - Three

Heavy Meadows was kind of a big deal for Detroit's Javelins in 2008. I know I loved it. A lot. And people who have taste loved the album, too. So now I'm ecstatic that the album will be getting the vinyl treatment thanks to Suburban Sprawl . And judging from the picture of the packaging above, it'll be crazy awesome. The orange wax alone makes me swoon. No word yet on an official release date, but we'll be seeing it sometime this spring. Javelins - [...]
Detroit often oscillates between the butt of a joke and a classic example of what frightens people about cities. Every few years though, the indie scene there comes back to life with musicians who claim that Detroit's going to be known for music again like it was in the Motown era. Of course, a lot of moneyed musicians called Detroit their home: Eminem, Kid Rock, Kiss, the White Stripes and Madonna. And when a few bands sprung up from around The White Stripes, I'll admit I was skeptical of a true "movement." But the sheer number of awesome [...]
