What it is.. Tis' the season.. The Holidays are upon us. Instead of posting some cheesy Christmas tracks we would like to leave you with vintage material from the late great and never forgotten J.Dilla. (RIP) Dilla's influence on todays music is self evident. Take some time out to read up and enjoy some of the legends earlier work. The first installment is of J.Dillas earliest work in Detroit, the year is 1995. Dilla went by the alias [...]

J Dilla's quintessential production is among the most legendary and imitated styles in Hip-Hop. Since making his mark and especially since his passing, producers and MCs alike have tried to recapture that unmistakable Dilla sound. For the most part, these attempts only make us long for the real thing. Now younger brother, Illa J has decided to make a foray into rapping to continue the family legacy with his debut album, Yancey Boys which is completely produced by J Dilla. Unfortunately, Illa's deficiencies on the mic stifle his quest to carry on the Dilla legacy. [...]

A few weeks ago, I wrote a piece for LA Weekly discussing the difficulties J Dilla's estate has had in enforcing copyright law and paying off the six-figure IRS debt left behind. In the aftermath of the story's publication, I had the chance to speak with his mother, Ms. Maureen Yancey about Dilla's legacy and her current estrangement with the executors of his estate. Q: In the original article, some comments from Dilla's estate's executors made you take pause. What [...]

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was working on a story about J Dilla's legacy and the problems that his estate has had in enforcing copyright law. It's up and running now for you to scoff derisively at. A follow-up story talking to Dilla's family maybe in the works, so there might be more layers to this story. Sort of like a seven-year dip. Nay, exactly like a 7-layer dip. LA Weekly: Who's Biting Dilla's Beats Download: (I recognize that this is probably [...]

Very quickly, here's a couple of nuggets from the inbox that I meant to put up before I zoned out for the weekend. More than ten years after the original nucleus split, the Pharcyde are finally set to perform together on this summer's Rock the Bells tour. Fader was happy to spread the good news. Here's a couple of Pharcyde numbers to jog your memory in case you might have forgotten. Circa 1995. Jay Dee - "Drop" (feat. The Pharcyde) Jay Dee - "Y?" [...]

In the 7th installment of Diamond Radio, Lester Diamond delivers a barrage of funk, soul, hip hop and more experimental sounding tracks. Lester introduces a new rapper/producer to the Diamond Radio camp: Merchant of Death aka Data Complex. In the news, Governor Schwarzenegger says marijuana is a "leaf not a drug" and the Dr. agrees. An American solider in Iraq says, "I don't think this place is worth another soldier's life." A Polish man is tasered and killed by TSA agents. Finally, what's up with Isaac Hayes and Scientology ?! Flying [...]

By D'Aziz Kanye West - " Homecoming " ft Chris Martin. The last time Kanye dropped an album I initially claimed the only good song on it was the masterpiece "Gone." I later repented, even the track with the doucheopotamus from Maroon 5 was listenable - wack falsetto "hook" notwithstanding. This time around I'm ready to jump on the bandwagon. Indeed, I've already demonstrated my willingness to accept clown/genius juxtapositioning with my pimping of the Jay Z track "Beach Chair," produced by and featuring Chris Martin of Coldplay. Unfortunately, I'm [...]

Oh the slippery slope of ranking rap & hip-hop on indie music blogs. Not that I totally consider MOKB an indie music blog though. Well, these are the rap/hip-hop albums I listened to and liked most this year. You may not agree and that's a-okay with me. Please feel free to point me towards others. In fact I encourage and appreciate it. Here is the listing. Reminder: DJ albums will have their own list later in the week. DERT's Sometimes I Rhyme Slow [...]

Faithful visitors to this blog may remember a time, nearly 350 days ago, when I attempted to post 60 songs throughout the course of November. All was going well and I was on track to complete my task when suddenly, in a post about Jenny Lewis's cover of the Travelling Wilburys' "Handle With Care," STEREOGUM linked to my site where the original was hosted. Literally thousands of people visited PIMPS OF GORE in a matter of hours, and my bandwidth for the month was kaput. I found it a little bit amusing that my site was crippled not [...]
