Jay Jay Pistolet is the sound of Christmas coming early. He wraps his tender, heartfelt numbers up with his guitar-strings and coats them in layers of reverb, akin to sprinklings of cocoa powder on a cappucino. Chocolat chaud is his winter beverage of choice in Hooked Up On Us - an insistent song which refuses to give up on a relationship which has been and gone. His attention to detail, lyrically speaking, and feel for a good rhyme shine like lights twinkling out from November shopping displays. Rushing through chirpy descriptions of bygone days and future plans [...]

21 year old Londoner Jay Jay Pistolet was personally picked by Laura Marling to join her for main support for here current tour. His debut Happy Birthday You EP , produced by Charlie Fink (of Noah and the Whale) was released on November 17th on Stiff Records . Oh Caroline MySpace ## CD's ## Hype Machine
Jay Jay Pistolet is an island in the middle of West London. His music is inspired by surf pop, like the Beach Boys, and classic literature from F. Scott. Fitzgerald. He has toured around the world with Katie Melua, Two Gallants, and Kid Harpoon, and has had his music produced by Charlie Fink of Noah and the Whale. His debut EP, Happy Birthday You , was released by Stiff Records this week. His voice croons and the bells and harmonies he uses are pleasant. [...]

Myspace // "Oh Caroline" [Audio] We've touched on the greatness of Jay Jay Pistolet before, from his gig at the Great Escape to his tunes that bring to mind literary greats, as well as contemporaries like Johnny Flynn. Now the West London native has been hand-picked by Laura Marling for a UK tour, which started last Friday. His debut Happy Birthday You EP, produced by Charlie Fink (of Noah and the Whale), will be released on November 17th on Stiff Records. [...]
Just a quick post, here's a little song that came my way today. Nothing fancy, no tricky time signatures or anything that would have been out of place in the last 50 years of popular music, but just right for a soothing end to the week. Listen: Jay Jay Pistolet - Oh Caroline MySpace

When I first heard Jay Jay Pistolet, reviewing the other song from this single no less, I took an immediate dislike to him. His voice was the major factor, it sounds like he's doing a bad impression of Truman Capote with a comedy giant lollypop in his mouth, and it certainly isn't your usual dulcit folk lilt. On the more upbeat "We Are Free", it just didn't work for me, and I didn't listen to him for a few months. How wrong I was to do this. I read about "Holly" elsewhere (I forget exactly where I'm afraid) [...]
Oh, those Girls In Green Shoes have done it again and got involved with something that looks awesome. Girls In Green Shoes are some incredibly nice girls who do the band booking and artist liaison for the Blissfields Festival as well as writing many many live reviews (I completely recommend reading their blog on MySpace [...]

[Photo Credit: Max Knight] Myspace // "We Are Free" [mp3] // "Bags of Gold" [Video] I can't quite put my finger on where and when I found out about Mr. Pistolet, perhaps it was The Great Escape? I don't really know. There was quite a good gig there that featured Noah & the Whale (I still have like 3 of those whale cut-outs from that night!), Mumford & Sons and Laura [...]

There's an intriguing wee scene blossoming down in London around a little indie label called Chess Club Records. Toadfans may well have encountered them already as they're home to the magnificient Mumford & Sons, who have been received favourably here at Toad HQ both live and on record . They also look after the affairs of one Justin Hayward-Young, who apparently shares a house with Marcus Mumford, and records under the rockiest of rock'n'roll monikers; Jay Jay Pistolet. His star seems to be on the rise following last year's release, on Chess Club, of a single called We Are Free, [...]

I'll apologise at the start for the lack of updates from me for the last month. Hectic doesn't even come close to summing up the last few weeks. There was the end of exams, followed by trying to earn some quick cash, followed by one amazing loved up week in Ibiza, then graduation. It's been tiring. Anyway, enough of the excuses. This compilation has been finished for a couple of weeks but I just haven't had time to upload all the tracks, which meant I couldn't let share it with you all. Onto the music. Here [...]

I thought that my recent post on Mumford and Sons was a fairly minor affair, but it turned out to be one of the most popular for a while. Certainly one of the most commented on. One of these comments came from a shadowy figure called Neil who complimented the post, but then commanded me to write about Jay Jay Pistolet. Well, erm…OK sir. The thing is, I've been intending to write about JJP for a while after hearing him play a live session on Marc Riley's old 6Music show at the end of last year. I recorded [...]

Slow Club seem to be playing everywhere in London all the time. They're practically omnipresent. Their recent residency at the Enterprise began on March 31st and has featured talented openers such as Eugene McGuinness and The Wave Pictures ; I caught them on Monday when Jay Jay Pistolet warmed up the crowd with an incredibly engaging set. I've written about both bands before so I'll spare you a lengthy description of how awesome they are. Suffice it to say that it was a fantastic, intimate gig and Slow Club's encore [...]

It's Christmas Eve. I'm at work, but not working as is evident from this post. It's actually a good day to be coming in - quiet commute, and just after 9am was a good time to go to Oxford Street for last-minute Christmas shopping - I've hardly seen it so quiet. Anyway, I wasn't going to post the usual indie-bands-doing-Christmas songs, but I've come across some this morning as part of my hard work, and I thought I'd sign off with some seasonal cheer. This may be the last post till after [...]

Here's to hoping that last weeks last-minute cancellation of Handsome Furs at The Fly was due to prior touring commitments with Wolf Parade. Otherwise the no show is pretty poor fare. However, having remained to see the evening limp along we were rewarded with a surprising discovery in the form of Jay Jay Pistolet. Although Mr. Pistolet plies his trade in rather safe (and, it must be admitted, fairly well-trodden) territory, he is blessed with a remarkable voice that manages to mix both melancholic meandering with a strength and soul that holds his spindly arrangements together. [...]
