Jay Reatard 's legacy may be defined by his quirky punk tradition present in 'It Ain't Gonna Save Me.' The video is darkly comical, as well. RIP. Watch the video to 'It Ain't Gonna Save Me' below:
To celebrate Record Store Day this April 16, Grimey's in Nashville has announced a sidewalk sale, mini-festival, film screenings and more!

Fresh off the press today... Music for Ants put out a playlist of the best closing tracks on an artist's final album. Pretty cool. Free mp3: LCD Soundsystem – Home Free mp3: The Stone Roses – Love Spreads Free mp3: Nick Drake – From The Morning Free [...]

Last year, I made a mix of Debut Album, Opening Tracks , which featured some of my favorite side one track ones on debut albums. In thinking about some of the bands are breaking up recently (LCD Soundsystem, The White Stripes), I decided to make a sequel to that mix of the best closing tracks on an artist's final album. What artists went out with a bang? Who provided the most climatic tracks to the end their career? I've found it's actually quite rare for bands to end their career on a high note, and in many occassions a great [...]
Jake and Jamin Orrall specialize in fuzzy West Coast rock that plays best in a party atmosphere (or on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2). There is a vintage feel to the brothers' guitar-and-drums lineup, forcing an emphasis on quality songwriting and stage presence; superfluous bells and whistles are not present to mask the occasional misstep. [...]

Tweet Let me just start off by saying, Jay Reatard is missed. For someone who has discovered this punk outlaw posthumously, I am saddened that I will never see the recorded psychotic energy explode live on stage. While getting lost in YouTube I discovered a cover he did of Beck's wonderful surf-rock jam, "Gamma Ray". Jay keeps it funky, but sets all dials to their limit. The result is a nasty cover that simultaneously grooves and combusts. R.I.P. Jay. [...]
Ty Segall took up where the late Jay Reatard left off. Young, loud and snotty, Segall made a great album last year in Melted . He plans to follow with a new release in June. The San Francisco-based rocker headlines a cheap show at the Empty Bottle Monday night. Heavy Cream , Half Rats and Slushy open. Girlfriend - Ty Segall
A new documentary will offer a look at the all-too-short life of the immensely talented, incredibly prolific Jay Reatard, who died early last year. Better than Something: Jay Reatard , will begin making the rounds at two Tennessee film festivals next month. The film, according to a synopsis, will feature "never-before-seen footage" of performances and interviews with Jay, as well as insights from "colleagues, friends, and family" about the garage-punk icon's life and times. The first screening of the film, directed by Alex Hammond and Ian Markiewicz (who were also behind Waiting for Something [...]
Filed under: News , Movies Rob Walbers A feature documentary on Jay Reatard will debut next month in Memphis. As Commercial Appeal reports, the documentary, 'Better Than Something: Jay Reatard' was filmed in April 2009, just months before the musical iconoclast died unexpectedly of a drug overdose at age 29 . The narrative largely focuses on the early part of Reatard's last year, and includes never-before-seen footage from performances and home videos. [...]
By our estimation, 2010 can be best summed up as the year of beach music. All year long, it seemed, new bands from coastal regions were cropping up with their hazy guitar tones and rich vocal ha... Rating: 4 out of 5 stars From the instant you press play on your stereo, to the moment in which its final notes resound, Mind Spiders refuse to stop. In that miniscule pregnant pause before the guttural guitar resounds through your speakers, take a breather, because you'll need all your strength to keep up with their punk pace. "Go!" is the album opener and does exactly what its title exclaims. It's an almost two minute scramble of garage rock and gang vocals that pack a hell of [...]

I never know what to make of weeks like this. And when I say "weeks like this" I actually mean every week I write one of these recap posts. You never know what to expect in the music world or in life in general. I've said this many times before, but it bears repeating. Think about it. In a single week a hotly anticipated album can drop, festival rumors, no matter how legit or just plain entertaining, can begin to circulate, and a larger-than-life band can announce a string of tour dates. Then there the more unfortunate events. It seems [...]

Today is the one year anniversary of Jay Reatard's (Real name: Jimmy Lindsey Jr.) death. It was a Sunday and I remember driving to church with a mix CD I'd burned for myself in the car. Aint gonna Save me was the song in the very middle of the mixtape. If you're unfamiliar, the outro to "Aint gonna save me" goes "All is lost there is no hope" for about a minute. I remember rewinding that outro for the entire car ride over and over again. As depressing as that may sound, it really wasn't. Jay's music is so full [...]

MP3: Jay Reatard - Fluorescent Grey MP3: Deerhunter - Oh It's Such a Shame It's been a full year since Jay Reatard 's passing and I'm going to let this post be it for today, as we miss the dude a ton. I wrote a quick blurb last year after getting the news which should still be checked out and heard and today I'm posting his split with Deerhunter where they covered each others hits. Pitchfork posted an oral history on him that's [...]
