This shit is… fuckin’ ridiculous. Kanye’s infamous lyric could be a one-line review of his Watch the Throne live show with Jay-Z, a 40-song epic that cashes in all your craic tokens at once. It’s a blockbuster from the off, as the two hip-hop gladiators rise from two 50ft LED podium cubes in the middle of the floor for the operatic ‘H.A.M.’, and snarling rottweiler visuals rile the crowd. The Dublin shows fall on Kanye’s birthday weekend too, but he and Jay are the ones dishing out the presents in the O2. Over the two-and-a-half [...]
With Friday's show sold out, Jay-Z and Kanye West (or, we suspect, their people's people) have cut prices for students and the unwaged for Saturday night. A limited number of tickets priced €49.50 across selected price levels are available only at Ticketmaster outlets nationwide now. Tickets are available via cash only transaction and subject to availability. Student or unwaged I.D. required. Please note this offer is not available via telephone, online or by credit card facilities as these would incur additional charges. The rappers stated that Irish fans have always been great supporters of their music [...]

Let's set the sceptre rolling with a pithy adherence to the cult of celebrity. Who would you deem more famed: Jay-Z or Kanye West ? About which would you rather read stories of fabricated salaciousness? Would you sooner christen your offspring Shawn or Kanye? Would you care? Indeed does anyone care? To quote Mr. West, "Do anybody make real shit anymore?" Watch The Throne was arguably, to clumsily paraphrase, really quite shit in places. Fanciful inquisitions aside however, if this uniting to tour the record aforesaid ought to celebrate the coming together [...]

A video of Jay and Ye performing to an enthralled crowd was the most apt choice for this song. The duo spent the past year performing Niggas in Paris to sold out shows often repeating it ten or more times in a row. No other kind of video would have done justice to the enormity of this song's success. It gets the people going.

A lot of people said 2011 was a terrible year. Myself included. And sure, in some ways it was, and in some ways it wasn't, and 2011 is as subject to perspective and the theory of relativity as any other year. But it seemed tough for a lot of people. Europe began sinking into critical debt, natural disasters seemed particularly rife with 2011 kicking off in Australia with devastating floods in Queensland... And of course as the people of multiple countries stood up to their dickhead dictators and said 'enough', they were (among other things) used as human shields. It [...]

I'll never stop loving the beauty of a physical album; everything from the scent of a new vinyl, to the magic of reading the lyrics and seeing the images inside the insert, to the touch of the glossy, matte or recycled paper, and the most important factor - the cover art of the actual overall masterpiece. Here is some of the best album art of 2011. It's easy to see in all of these artists, that there was an actual thought to the structure of not only their music but how it visually sounds. Enjoy! [...]

The third quarter of the year saw the release of some epic mainstream rap albums ( Watch the Throne , Tha Carter IV ), the return of otherwise absent rappers ( Writing on the Wall 2 ) and the culmination of internet buzz into real buzz for some QM favorites ( ASAP Rocky will be joining Drake and Kendrick Lamar on his next tour ). Below you’ll find a mix representing some of our favorite raps from the third quarter, with a focus on song that we haven’t featured in prior posts: Listen: [...]

Put a little wobble to that swag and we get A.Skillz remix of "Otis". Can't say I was the biggest fan of the original - I think Otis was in need of some funkedout wobble. Plus, I'm never one to resist an A.Skillz remix. He's a genYus. What a difference a warm day makes in Canberra. I emerged yesterday to find people walking all over Canberra, happily chirping away to each other as they waited outside for their coffee (usually in winter waiting outside means angry faces). People are undeterred by the explosive fire that happened on Friday in the industrialised suburb Mitchell, and they're relaxed. And just quickly on the subject of fires, there have been a lot in Canberra lately! Another recent fire incident was when the part of the beautiful New Acton precinct burnt down (pictured above). Weird... Sadly I'm a [...]

Regular readers may be a little surprised by this post. A rising R&B superstar who's written for and worked with the likes of Beyonce, Jay-Z and Kanye is a little detached from the usual smaller scale hip-hop artists we tend to feature. However the mantra at HMCMB has never had anything to do with an artists reputation, focusing solely instead on the quality of music they produce, if we like it, we share it, regardless. In fact the only real question to be asked here is just why it's taken us so long. Frank Ocean hooked us way [...]

Don't think this weekend.. Go out and Do what you desire. Don't Overthink! "I've been thinking Hobbes --" "On a weekend?" "Well, it wasn't on purpose..." ~ Calvin & Hobbes It's peanut butter jelly time The Buckwheat Boys - Peanut Butter Jelly Time (Luke Da Duke Remix) This is pretty good bootleg. If you are not yet formally acquainted allow me to introduce you to Levins and Captain Franco. Levin's is your favourite DJs, favourite Australian DJ. If not for his musical selections, definitely for his kangaroo burgers and fine hospitality. Meanwhile, Franco is the DJ of choice for all those untouchably, hot hipster girls that look like they fell out of one of your wank fantasies. Together with the help of Spruce Lee they do a hip hop night called Halfway Crooks. It earns both the disparagement and envy of 'true school' hip hop heads. It is one of [...]

The Baron's relationship with Jay-Z is, in one word, tumultuous. Back in his eighth grade hey-day as a red-eyed pubescent “wiger” The Baron had an ever-evolving affinity for golden era hip-hop, Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt arguably being the most formative. But not since The Black Album has our relationship been anywhere near harmonious (The Baron has seen the tyranny of the Illuminati first hand and he'll be the first to throw Hov under the bridge, specifically the Brooklyn Bridge). Their relationship took an unexpected turn this past Saturday as The Baron, half-way to a drunken stupor, [...]

It's hard to know how to frame a record like Watch the Throne . Set against the backdrop of Top 40 hip-hop, increasingly defined by the hegemonic dominance of a small group of rappers, and the long-outdated single-centric album campaign formula, it's startingly adventurous and experimental. Taken as the latest chapter in either of Jay's or Kanye's formidable catalog, it feels pretty uneven and disjointed, though occasionally thrilling. Putting aside context, it's a jumble of ideas, some brilliant and others not quite as well fleshed-out. But to consider a project like Watch the Throne , as [...]
