Hey folks, just a quick note to let you know we'll be liveblogging the American Music Awards this Sunday night (ABC, 8/7central — we'll be here for the Pacific time zone broadcast) so please come by as we bow down to/bitch about who won what, who blew whom off the stage and who ripped off Lady Gaga's look most blatantly. A few things we should all reasonably expect to see: :: Janet Jackson opening yet another awards show with an eight-minute medley of her hits, followed by her getting winded after repeat visits to the [...]

I love the new Wale album. Especially the track with Lady GaGa (which I guess has been out for months, but what do I know?). And I can't get enough of Jay-Z's new kid J. Cole . Dude is nasty. Even owns Wale on the aforementioned disc. I've claimed to hate anything recorded post-"Fantasy" that has a chick on the hook, yet I can't stop singing that " Do Over " joint from the new Ghostface album. I'm supposed to hate all this shit. So my question [...]

This is the first I've heard from DJ Shares who resides in Denver/Boulder CO. This isn't by any means the slickest or surprising remix in the world, but for once I think you can judge a song by it's title. It gets a little sketchy at points, in the chorus especially as it doesn't match up very nicely, but still if you like both of these songs you're sure to have some liking for this. Link below. The Knife "Heartbeats" vs. Jay-Z ft. Rihanna & Kanye "Run This [...]

I'd say that half of the music I like is pure, decadent electro that doesn't really require much thought. The other half is music that tells a story, and that's why I like this track from Oddioblender . Give it a listen and let the story play out. Oddioblender - Psychics Don't Need Hooks After listening to it, I totally started remember Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid. Remember how he read your memory card, and the only way to beat him was to unplug [...]

By Contributing Writer TIM EMMERICK The Ting Tings probably would not call themselves an indie band (considering they're signed with Columbia and had a No. 1 hit in the UK) but they do most of the same things that our beloved indie rockers do. For example, they make records, go on tour and dress like something that someone once ate at a street fair in Williamsburg. Now rumor has it the London based dance-pop duo has signed with Jay-Z 's filthy LiveNation/Rocafella hybrid label [...]
But while "Beyoncé" means "cataclysmically beautiful" to me, her name has a few other meanings to the other humans who scribble and scrabble around the Internet. Forgive them, Beyoncé!

by chris carpenter Alright. Somebody has to talk about this. I'm down. If you happen to live in or around New York City, there's an unavoidable force majeure with every passing car. "IN NEWW YOOoooorkkkk." The frequency hits you full blast as the car is by your side, and drowns out as it zooms by. You think you're safe until you reach the end of the block and the bar on the corner is in full symposium, "These [...]
Beanie Sigel is not done with Jay-Z. In this video Beanie spits some bars about Jay Z in the studio and heads into the booth to lay down the record. Keep your ears open for this one. Still on his one man crusade to save Black music (whether he knows we've appointed him to or not), Damon Dash opens up, candidly answering the questions about Jay, Beanie, Cam'ron, Jim Jones, mistakes made in the past & present, etc. - Says Lyor's influence compromised the Roc. - Never thought Roc-A-Fella would be "irrelevant." - Hasn't seen Cam in "two or three years" and hopes that he & Jim work things out. - Pledges his loyalty to Jimmy. If you noted the inclusion of "Empire State Of Mind (Part II)" on Alicia Keys' The Element Of Freedom tracklist with a roll of the eyes, consider this: it appears to be much more than a retread. The version she performed for iHeartRadio's Stripped Live yesterday, at least, represented a fully distinct song, save that ubiquitous hook. Catch Alicia performing "Empire State Of Mind (Part II)" following the jump. First impression? Her "sequel" actually manages to create some more anthemic points than did the Jay-Z [...]
BEST ALBUMS OF THE NOUGHTIES The daunting task of putting together something that you know lots of readers won't agree with is never easy, but then we thought you could always go make your own lists. At least we had the balls... So the 50s had rock n roll, the 60s had it's pop and folk, the 70s it's punk, disco and glam, the 80s it's pop, hip hop and hair rock, the 90s it's grunge, brit pop and dance music. It begs the question - what standout genre defines the [...]

Bon Jovi bumped Carrie Underwood down and rocked their way to the top of the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart with The Circle in a week that is pretty much the calm before the high-profile release storm. But— yeeowch! —the 163,000 copies the New Jersey band moved over the seven days sales were tracked is quite a dip from the 292,000 their last set, Lost Highway , did. Alt rock act Flyleaf also debuted in the Top 10 (#8) with Memento Mori , but, really, all [...]
Filed under: The Hit List A musician with a theme song? Don't all artists' songs represent? While that might be the case, so many of our favorite bands rep themselves and reference themselves in their lyrics, we thought we'd take a look at the different strategies performers enlisted to define themselves, describe themselves and make their mark. 'Theme From The Monkees,' The Monkees "Hey, hey, we're the Monkees" states [...]
