[The internet has a habit of making friends of strangers and I guess I would have to describe Campfires & Battlefields as my best friend-I've-never-met. He is one of the longest standing readers and commenters of this blog, and has written another two fine Sunday Supplement posts for us this week. Cheers C&B.] This lot first caught my attention because they take their name from a character in the "Port William Fellowship" novels of the American novelist and poet Wendell Berry, one of my favorites. At its best, Berry's writing is thrifty [...]

The variety of live music is my favorite part of LA. There is always something to do, with the different types of music that come to our fair city each and every night. In two weeks from Friday, Jayber Crow will be making their way from the midwest to grace us in LA at Hotel Cafe. I really didn't know much about the band until I got an email from one of them a couple of days ago. Here's a little bit about the folk duo: Zach Hawkins and Pete Nelson are about as Midwestern [...]
The first video from the folk duo finds the naturalistic Midwest natives creating an entire snowy world from paper cut-outs. The results are quite impressive, considering the pain-staking effort that making this video no doubt took. Normally, I try not to share dialogue from email correspondence, but this note from Crow member Zach Hawkins is to good not to: "We made the video...just a mere nine months after [2008's Two Short Stories ] came out in its tangible form. (Heck, we rarely use microphones when we play, so we figure people can't blame us too much for [...]
Jayber Crow is a folky acoustic duo--1 part Northwest, 1 part Midwest. Pete and Zach are known for their intimate shows which push to give you a personal invitation to each song. But if you've heard their new album, you'll know this isn't very difficult. Two Short Stories shows a lot of new potential for their simple arrangements and story telling lyrics. They're definitely a pleasure to listen to especially when they're singing together. You can pick up the new album and their Farm and the Nomad EP here [...]

Well, this is quite the Osar-category i know, but it's just a way for me to talk about 10 artists that i like, but just don't seem to fit in the top 50-list that is coming up after this post. (well, not immediately after it, somewhere this week). The albums of these people have their flaws, but they are promising enough to make me look forward excitedly to when they release their next album. So, without no further ado, here they are. DISCLAIMER: ok, first add this. The songs I add aren't necessarily my favourite of [...]

Jayber Crow Two Short Stories (Field and Forest, 2008) Grade: A Download: Jayber Crow - "Saint Anthony" Download: Jayber Crow - "Devil and the Desert" Lots of things spoil with age: fruit, milk, U2. But some things, like wine and fruit-infused vodkas, just keep getting better and better. You can toss Jayber Crow into the latter category as well. The folk duo, comprised of Pete Nelson and Zach Hawkins, is back with a deeper, expanded [...]
I was going to save this one for Monday, but fuck it. This is a spring weekend song, plain and simple. It's coffee, sunshine, and the sound of everything thawing. Jayber Crow - O My God When I Drop Dead. I love that it starts on full-throttle and never slows down. And is it just me, or is Loudon Wainwright making something of a comeback? I hear his voice a lot these days, especially here, with Pete Nelson's and Zach Hawkins' voices combining to sound reedy and vulnerable, just like Wainwright. Nelson and Hawkins are the only members of Jayber...

So i'm pretty sure i'm more excited about volume 2 of this post than i was the first. Since volume 1 , we've seen these come out: The Black Crowes - Warpaint ~ buy it The Felice Brothers - The Felice Brothers ~ buy it Whiskeytown - Strangers Almanac (Deluxe Edition) ~ [...]

Friday. It feels good to be on time, and to have some tracks to post. If you read my album forecast , you know there were a few good ones that came out on Tuesday. Got most of 'em (i had The Felice Brothers ship to where i'll be next week). But today you get a little taste of everything - brand new tracks, old tracks that i just got, and even one new face: mp3: The Black Crowes - Oh Josephine [...]

In many ways, listening to Jayber Crow makes me homesick (for the Midwest). Makes me nostalgic. Their simple sound – two guys, two instruments (mando and guit), two voices – reminds me of going to coffeeshops in high school. Being impressed by guys a little older than me living the dream. Making music. (Maybe there is hope for us yet, Coconut.) They remind me of an earthier The Format . Listen: Jayber Crow ∞ The Farmer And The Nomad Further Study: Website [...]

Download: Jayber Crow - "The News About Michael. Married In New Mexico" Download: Jayber Crow - "Eugene, Oregon (Manifest Destiny)" Download: Jayber Crow - "What Poets Know" Oh man, this was just what I needed. Jayber Crow posted a copy of there song "Devil and the Desert" to their MySpace on Friday. This is solidly one of my favorite Jayber Crow songs – definitely a song to keep truckin' to. Accompanying [...]
