Somewhere between The Byrds and Wilco lie The Jayhawks. Call it folk, call it alternative, or call it country but one thing is for sure, it doesn't sound like 1992.

Today feels like one of those dulcet, lucky days of indian summer reprieve before the air turns crisp and cold around all the edges. As I sat on a front porch this morning with my coffee, looking at the mountains, I took note of the slightest suggestion of autumn coming. I can feel it waiting for me. Hence I am cramming my days and nights full with as many warm-weather things as I can before the seriousness (and wildness) of Colorado autumn wrestles me into sweaters and rainboots. I think I've said this ten thousand times before in [...]

MP3: Dar Williams(feat. Gary Louris of the Jawhawks) - "As Cool As I Am" The soon-to-be released album from folkie Dar Williams , Many Great Companions , which arrives from Razor and Tie on October 12, is going to be a very interesting record. The 2-disc affair will team Williams with plenty of guests musicians like Nickel Creek , Mary Chapin Carpenter , Patty Larkin , Motherlode , and Gary Louris of the Jayhawks for the first disc, Songs Revisited With Guitar and a Few [...]
It's hard for me to pick a favorite part of last night's Mark Olson show at Club Garibaldi, but I'll try. Somehow the song "Over My Shoulder" had completely escaped me in all my years listening to the Jayhawks . Sure enough though, there it is, track number six on Tomorrow the Green Grass . It's more likely that time passed since spending quality time with the band's catalog left my memory a little shaky. Last night's show reminded me the power of Mark Olson [...]

I had the opportunity to see Appleton, Wisconsin native Cory Chisel with his touring band the Wandering Sons back in February at RIBCO in Rock Island opening for Dawes along with Jason Boesel . I wasn't familiar with Cory before I heard of that show, but quickly his track "Born Again" from his latest full length Death Won't Send A Letter became a favorite with it's urgent Animals-esque organ lead and his slightly hoarse delivery. His performance at the show was fantastic- full of energy [...]
Michael Tomasky at The Guardian asks his readers to "Name us a song or two that all "right-thinking people" would dismiss as sentimental but that you love. And be bold and unapologetic!" I'll start off with Neil Diamond's " Forever In Blue Jeans " a top 20 hit from 1979, seen here performed in concert for a CBS special in 2009. I could list you hundreds of reasons why all "right thinking people" should not only dismiss this bit of sentimental drivel, but should actively hate it. Instead, I'll limit [...]

The new release schedule was pretty light this week but reissues continue to trickle out. A couple of the best albums of the early '90s were just reissued. The Jayhawks' Hollywood Town Hall and Superchunk's No Pocky for Kitty remain two of my favorite albums of that decade. In addition to those albums, two other fine releases, Superchunk's On the Mouth and Jayhawks Tomorrow the Green Grass also get the reissue treatment. By the early to mid '90s, vinyl was [...]
Mark Olson rediscovers his inner-romantic on the quietly elegant folk-pop of Many Colored Kite. Pop music - Mark Olson - Recreation and Sports - Music - Arts

I immediately began to flashback to 1992 when I learned the Jayhawks ' co-founder Mark Olsen' s put out a new solo record. Nineteen ninety-two was the Hawks' Hollywood Town Hall era, the third of the band's seven total albums and I was splitting time between college in Syracuse and a girlfriend in Ithaca. We were pretty poor - college bills, part-time jobs, waiting tables - but we were generally pretty relaxed, hanging out with the dogs on the farm, spending weekends skiing on the cheap and listening to WICB on the [...]
Mark Olson has left an indelible mark on alt-country. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.
A Bonnaroo performance never materialized, but the Jayhawks definitely aren't sleeping on any of this reunion business. The alt-country legends have announced that, in addition to their already reissued debut LP , they're also re-releasing two more albums: 1992's Hollywood Town Hall and 1995's Tomorrow the Green Grass . The news comes hot on the heels of a Jayhawks hometown set at the rain-soaked Basilica Block Party on July 10th, and the new reissues – [...]
Nearly 30 years after releasing their last studio album, Avalon , influential art-rock act Roxy Music have announced that they will reunite for the first time in over a decade for a string of shows in the UK in 2011 to celebrate the band's 40th anniversary. Joining Bryan Ferry on the seven-date run will be multi-instrumentalist Andy Mackay, guitarist Phil Manzanera and drummer Paul Thompson. Despite appearing alongside his former band mates on Ferry's upcoming studio album Olympia, which is due out on October 25, founding member Brian Eno will not take part [...]

The Jayhawks and their Burritos Bunkhouse should have been Eagles huge. Music - Arts - Jayhawks - Bunkhouse Album - Gary Louris

My vinyl copy of The Sadies Darker Circles turned up last week and has been getting plenty of spins since it's arrival, at this point it's leading the way in my best of year, the band have put out a video this week featuring the track Postcards. Credit My Aimz is True The Jawhawks début album has been released for the first time on CD through Lost Highway, the press release has links to a couple of vintage performances including this one from 1985 [...]

The Jayhawks' first album was just reissued and a pair of very early videos (including a gig at a pig roast) were unearthed, too. Let The Critics Wonder - The Jayhawks
I'm sure most people will be clamoring for the new Band of Horses and Black Keys albums today (and maybe the Avenged Sevenfold thinger if you still haven't learned your lesson), but there are a few other releases flying under the rader you'll want to keep your eyes open for. David Bazan has a live vinyl release that was recorded last fall. LCD Soundsystem 's new full-length is getting some much-deserved praise already. Great Lake Swimmers have some live studio [...]

I don't often preview reissues but there are a pair of special ones out Tuesday. First, if you don't own the Rolling Stones Exile On Main Street in some format, please take a minute to lower your head in shame. Not only is Exile the best thing the Stones ever did, it's one of the best albums ever made (my No. 2 behind the Clash's London Calling ). The other release is the long overdue reissue of the Jayhawks' first album from 1986. Only 2000 vinyl copies were [...]
