Winding through to the end of Dilla Month i only thought it would be appropriate to blog this mix i put up about two weeks back. This is the first in a three part series of mixes I will be doing to say thanks to easily one of the most talented and forward thinking minds period. Jay Dee single handily changed the way I and I’m sure countless others listen to hip hop and music in general. I was a late appreciator of this man’s genius and after giving myself the time to properly digest alot of Dilla’s [...]
James " J Dilla " Yancey would be celebrating his 39th birthday today had he not tragically passed away on Feb. 10, 2006 due to complications related to Lupus. The proud Detroit native remains one of the most talented and versatile artists of our time, as he showcased his abilities to rap, sing, DJ, compose, and play multiple instruments over his legendary career. Today, on his birthday, we're taking a look back at 20 of our favorite Dilla beats of all time. Making this list was extremely difficult, to say the least. Among our team, we continued to throw [...]

Okay, this has got to be one of the most random releases of all time, but we can dig it. To celebrate their 10th anniversary, HHV.de teamed up with Stones Throw to do a limited 73 pressing. The first half features a Homeboy Sandman exclusive, "Richardsun", while the other side is a remix Madlib did for Jaylib's Champion Sound Deluxe . Like I said, really random. Anyway, you can stream the new Homeboy song below, which is yet another fine showing of his pure lyricism. The 73 can be purchased here .

This is a split 7-inch single from Homeboy Sandman and Jaylib, released with the Germany hip-hop shop HHV.de to celebrate their 10th anniversary. Only 300 copies are being pressed, and we have just a few coming here, which will ship on the week of December 10. Side 1 - "Richardsun" - a new, exclusive track by Homeboy Sandman produced by Rthentic RTNC. Side 2 is a Jaylib remix that Madlib did on one of his remix binges, previously released on Jaylib's Champion Sound Deluxe CD. via Stones Throw

Our latest Substitute Teachers comes from Seattle-via-Columbus based producer Rumtum , whose beat tapes and collaborative EP with Monster Rally have been some of our favorite releases this year. I shot him a few questions after listening to his mix. Where does the name Rumtum come from? It's like a Native American/tribal name. Was there a particular track or [...]
The team at Bling47 has been absolutely killing it. In addition to giving away the first part of Waajeed's 2008 beat tape , they also just uploaded some footage of DJ Amir speaking on Madlib 's beat for "No Games" by Jaylib. As some of you might now, Madlib used the same sample (or was it just the same beat?) on MF DOOM 's MM...FOOD album. But here, you hear about it all within the context of "No Games" and how it appeared on Champion Sound . Pretty dope.
This is old footage and has been floating around the Internet for a bit, but we thought we'd give it a post anyway. Clocking in at 20 minutes, J Dilla and Madlib tear up the stage at the Conga Room in Los Angeles with a slew of Champion Sound classics. I never had the chance to see Dilla perform live, and I regret that. On the other hand, I have seen Madlib perform and I can say that that was a rather interesting experience. Check out the video and let us know [...]
J-Dilla, Madlib, Quasimoto... Genius.

We're playing this Friday in Gigantic so all week long is going to be a FAUX Gigantic Blog Spesh . First up we're choosing Hip-Hop. When we're playing Laverys we like to ease the crowd into their night out with a few slower songs, some pop tracks and a bit of hip-hop. We'll be taking the same approach with your week easing you into Monday with a few more soothing tracks but there's enough to keep you interested, promise. Hip-Hop seems to be enveloping dubstep at the moment as demonstrated by Drizzy schmoozing all over [...]

Before Alchemist and Oh No released Gutter Water , I wasn't sure what to think; any time that two producing emcees collaborate on a project, I'm almost certainly going to compare their effort to Champion Sound by Jaylib. I still remember picking up my copy of Gutter Water the day that it came out, and I also remember being completely blown away. There was one immediate thought that came to my mind: Should I pour bleach into my ears to clean out the filth that I had just [...]
I know it's not new, but I thought you all might want some inspiration. Dilla and Madlib are beyond genius.

Took me longer than I thought but at least I'm feeling this Joe Cocker on acid vibe ; People are skeptical about reggaeton taking over some of the electronica sub-genres but here I quote Aeroplane "Genres are for journalists". Mixed with Ableton Live Tracklist: - A Touch Of Spring - Daedelus - Swallow Back! - Allmostt - Vertigo (Acidkids edit) - Blaze Tripp - Pickup Truck Vs Touch Me (Dan Aux VIP Party EDIT) - Ali Payami Vs Jamie XX - Pretty Boy Swag (Diplo & Munchi [...]

There's a fine line between a song that drags on too long and a song that ends too soon. I've actually wanted a reason to post a few of these tracks before, but held off on the basis that they're too short - most of them clock in at less than a minute. Today's Friday Five theme is songs that we wish were longer! These five tracks cover a lot of territory, from well-known artists like Jamie xx to the lesser known singer-songwriter Simone White. The common thread is their brevity - but what they lack in [...]

Emerging from the netherworld of Gardena, CA, young Zeroh has been one of very few new MCs to catch this pretentious rap critic's attention in the past year or so. With a technical style reminiscent of Quasar from Typical Cats and the early 90s GOOD [...]

The two hip hop juggernauts, Madlib and J-Dilla, got together once upon a time to create one of my favorite projects ever... Jaylib. The good people over at Stones Throw are having a video contest and this is one of the submissions they received for Jaylib - The Heist . This might be our new theme video at D&M! After you watch it you'll know why. Very impressive and creative if you ask me. Hit the jump to check it out... [...]

He began DJing in the mid-'80s with a California group named PSK. Soon after forming, the Beat Junkies became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop, including core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles. In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J. Rocc has been [...]
