Before Alchemist and Oh No released Gutter Water , I wasn't sure what to think; any time that two producing emcees collaborate on a project, I'm almost certainly going to compare their effort to Champion Sound by Jaylib. I still remember picking up my copy of Gutter Water the day that it came out, and I also remember being completely blown away. There was one immediate thought that came to my mind: Should I pour bleach into my ears to clean out the filth that I had just [...]
I know it's not new, but I thought you all might want some inspiration. Dilla and Madlib are beyond genius.

My friend Ed, from the excellent Mud Hut music distribution service has recently been putting together a series of podcasts. This week, he asked me to curate on behalf of the good folks here at Indie Shuffle! Needless to [...]

Took me longer than I thought but at least I'm feeling this Joe Cocker on acid vibe ; People are skeptical about reggaeton taking over some of the electronica sub-genres but here I quote Aeroplane "Genres are for journalists". Mixed with Ableton Live Tracklist: - A Touch Of Spring - Daedelus - Swallow Back! - Allmostt - Vertigo (Acidkids edit) - Blaze Tripp - Pickup Truck Vs Touch Me (Dan Aux VIP Party EDIT) - Ali Payami Vs Jamie XX - Pretty Boy Swag (Diplo & Munchi [...]

There's a fine line between a song that drags on too long and a song that ends too soon. I've actually wanted a reason to post a few of these tracks before, but held off on the basis that they're too short - most of them clock in at less than a minute. Today's Friday Five theme is songs that we wish were longer! These five tracks cover a lot of territory, from well-known artists like Jamie xx to the lesser known singer-songwriter Simone White. The common thread is their brevity - but what they lack in [...]

Click image to download full album Sounds like: Typical Cats, Freestyle Fellowship, Tech N9ne "Zeroh - saddlelight" What's so good? Emerging from the netherworld of Gardena, CA, young Zeroh has been one of very few new MCs to catch this pretentious rap critic's attention in the past year or so. With a technical style reminiscent of Quasar from Typical Cats and the early 90s GOOD [...]

The two hip hop juggernauts, Madlib and J-Dilla, got together once upon a time to create one of my favorite projects ever... Jaylib. The good people over at Stones Throw are having a video contest and this is one of the submissions they received for Jaylib - The Heist . This might be our new theme video at D&M! After you watch it you'll know why. Very impressive and creative if you ask me. Hit the jump to check it out... [...]

CLICK IMAGE TO VIEW VIDEO One of the original turntablists, J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 with Melo-D and Rhettmatic, but has done just as much on his own as in a group setting. He began DJing in the mid-'80s with a California group named PSK. Soon after forming, the Beat Junkies became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop, including core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles. In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J. Rocc has been [...]

February is generally the time of year when that first wave of great music starts to come around. With Destroyer and Adele dropping gems on us already, and new releases from Toro Y Moi, Theophilus , Saadiq and James Blake due in the weeks to come, I'd say that time might just be upon us. As always, the blog world is full of slaps, and my ears and inbox have both been flooded with quality. Feel free to thank Sam for putting me up on the Big K.R.I.T. Yours Truly session with Grillade, and Danielle for the [...]

There is so much new stuff getting released every month - we all have (real) jobs so it's impossible for me to write about everything I like and you to read the crap. Here is my first f ree Mp3 collection for January 2011 : Free Mp3: Matanza - Lluviaaa (via Pelski ) Free Mp3: Harry Belafonte - Banana boat song (Cubiq's 'Rum' Remix) (via Pelski ) Free Mp3: FUR- Clears Throat (Solar Bear [...]
Can there be a better way to start off a week but with an unreleased track from a supposed never completed album by the superstar duo of J. Dilla and Madlib - Jaylib? Don't think so. Only the brief tinges of sadness that so little of these cuts still remain to be exposed might jammy [...]
Madlib's Medicine Show series was one of the best/most consistent highlights of 2010, but his 11th release, Low Budget High Fi Music, was just released - and may be the best record of the collection. The latest LP is 28 tracks long (42 if you ordered the now sold out vinyl release), and contains music [...]

It's surely no coincidence that Christian AIDS have named this track 'Fever', what with it being exactly the sort of song that gets you more than a little hot under the collar. Haunting echoes make way for made-for-the-dancefloor beats that grind and bounce along at lightning speed, disappearing as quickly as they appeared. We might know very little about the band but we're pretty sure we know the best thing about them - the bit on their MySpace that reads "Record Label: We don't want one." Download 'Fever' here [...]

Dan Skoff doesn't have shit on this wintry mix. Singles J Mascis - "Not Enough" Several Shades Of Why out 3/15 on Sub Pop Starfucker - "Born" From Reptilians , out 3/8 on Polyvinyl Fergus & Geronimo - "Baby Don't You Cry" From Unlearn , out now on Hardly Art Madlib + J Dilla [...]

With the eleventh installment of Madlib's Medicine Show series, the prolific hip hop producer debuts an unreleased track potentially to have been included on a second album from Jaylib, his collaborative project with the late J Dilla. Plenty of new Dilla material has already seen the light of day since the innovative producer's sad, untimely death, but Stones Throw isn't going to stop rolling out the archived music. While he's best known for producing the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, Erykah Badu, Common, Pharcyde, and many others, Dilla still knew how to [...]

Another year, another month, another Smorg. Was really missing the old underground radio station WHPK when I made this, so it ended up having one of those old lo-fi-radio-station-recorded-t o-cassette feels to them. I dig it, and I hope that you good people do as well. Tracklist and DL link up under the blouse. Rite on. *PBBT!'S SMORGASBORD JANUARY 2011 [ DOWNLOAD ]
