Chicago - A woman and her guitar. That's all it was at Schubas on Thursday night – no props, no synthesizers, no suits, no suspenders, no nothing. It was lovely in its simplicity. Jaymay made her way through the small crowd in the intimate quarters at Schubas Tavern and took the stage in jeans and a blouse and immediately started loving on Chicago (smart woman.) The theme of the night was low key – Ms. Jaymay chatted and interacted with the audience throughout, and she simply brimmed over with charisma. Being a singer songwriter, she has many [...]

I follow the music and if that meant I'd end up at the Tin Angel two nights in a row then so be it. Jaymay is singer-songwriter from New York City. Prior to this show I had no clue who Jaymay was nor did I ever hear her music before. But within a few moments after she began playing I knew that I should be paying attention. Jaymay happens to be a great singer-songwriter and even though the majority of her songs are [...]

So it's Boston Beer Week in which the breweries that are descending on our fine city for the ultimate beer event, the American Craft Beer Fest (ACBF), do many promotions, tap take overs, beer dinners, meet & greets with brewers all over the city. I am overwhelmingly excited and will talk about it to anyone and everyone. Luckily for you, there is always room for music when it comes to beer. Tonight I have mapped out some of the places I want to be and it requires some walks, bus, and subway rides to get to my destinations. Obviously these [...]

How I met Your mother. Con una canzone, la mamma non era lei insomma, ma il punto non [...]
From January 21-31, the legendary Sundance Film Festival will return to Park City, Utah, and if you've been reading closely of late, you probably know this year's edition will feature projects and/or sounds from some of our favorite indie acts. But did you know just how many? It's invasion! In addition to the previously reported presence of Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear , we can also tell you that the Chicago post-rock outfit Califone will debut All My Friends Are Funeral Singers , the companion film to the [...]

Before the dust settles on this weekend's revelation that Grizzly Bear have written music for upcoming Ryan Gosling/Michelle Williams flick Blue Valentine , let's take a look at a few other artists premiering film score compositions at next year's Sundance Film Festival in Salt Lake City, UT: Waste Land - Music by Moby According to Britfilms and the Sundance description , Moby will supply music to Waste Land , a documentary about Brazilian artist [...]

When measured against the summer festival juggernauts (i.e., Bonnaroo, Lollapolooza, Outside Lands, Austin City Limits), Pickathon may appear unassuming in comparison. But, as William Shakespeare once said: "Though she be but little, she is fierce" (ol' Bill said that, right?). For Pickathon, roots music rules all, and the festival planners have picked some truly excellent acts to represent the time-honored genre. More festival details, lineup, and a whole bunch of MP3s after the jump. The 2009 Pickathon Festival is set to take place July 31st - August 2nd at [...]

Tristen @ Cameo First, we must thank long-time friend of Stark, Karp, for all the fabulous photos taken at the Showcase. The evening began in the Loving Cup Cafe which is attached through a series of speakeasy-esque narrow hallways to the main venue Cameo. We Starkians dined on some fabulous Loving Cup cuisine including pulled pork and massive fritatas before the festivities. A few Side Cars later, we realized it was 8:30 and time to get Tristen on stage. Tristen (8:30 pm): There was a pre-show buzz circulating [...]

Hotel Cafe was a force to be reckoned with at SXSW . It seemed like at almost any hour of any day I could go and see a Hotel Cafe artist. Omnipresent beings these Hotel Cafers. The first one I caught was the saucy Meiko inside the Convention Center on the Day Stage. Joined by a friend on trumpet, Meiko charmed the crowd, but dialed back her usual demeanor for the all ages crew. I later saw Meiko again at the Hotel Cafe showcase at The [...]
From time to time, I develop girl crushes. Case in point: Jaymay. Seriously. This chick is just about the most rockin' indie artist I've found in some time. I really can't stop playing her on repeat...which is why I'm writing about her now, even though I'm probably a bit behind the game. Now, yes, her music does at first seem uber sugary-sweet, which is not something to which I am normally
Dump loads of green dye into your local river, get gussied up in an overwhelming amount of green apparel, drink your weight in Guinness, regret that decision tomorrow morning and pop on this playlist: It's Saint Patrick's Day! Even if you aren't Irish, chances are you know someone who is, and it would be selfish not to celebrate their heritage, so we're here to help. Today is all about Irish beverages (car bombs, Guinness, Jameson), the color green, luckiness, shamrocks, general Irish pride, and of course, music about all of the above. Maybe that's not all today [...]
