However, at night Jean on Jean take to the stage at Bruar Falls. The Brooklyn band features an ex-member of Out Hud, but expect something much sweater. Despite news to the contrary, there are still record stores in America. Chains, less and less but, at least in New York, the good ones are still going. April 18 was the third annual Record Store Day , a "celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally." Or, an excuse to get people to go out and remember just how cool and fun it is to browse and buy physical records and CDs in an actual record store. To entice people to [...]

When they feature live music, MonkeyTown is one of Brooklyn's most underrated concert venues... pairing four walls of projected video art with super comfy low-slung sofas, a killer menu , and some at-home style vibes you won't find in most other venues - it's worth a visit anytime you're able to make it, so keep your eyes on their calendar . Example: look at the awesomeness you missed out on last night at MonkeyTown... Las Palabras and Jean on Jean . Jean on Jean's self-titled debut [...]

![Jean On Jean: Jean On Jean [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1381153_lg.jpg)
Written by Fense Indie-pop tends to be static and homogenous, but Jean On Jean utilizes the genre's core traits in such unique ways that it becomes quite fresh. Lead by Molly Schnick (Out Hud), Jean On Jean is an excellent recipe of indie-pop sub-genres, from minimal to experimental, and bedroom to orchestral. Molly's vocals at first may sound slightly European, but while they soon shed some of those elements, the music continues to have a more European pop sound. As the album continues, one [...]

* Jean on Jean-Tonight

When EAR FARM considered our impending move and relaunch at the end of 2007, we decided to switch from a scrolling blog format to a more magazine-y layout that would allow for us to highlight a "cover star"/ Band of the Week each week. In doing so we have featured 43 bands over the course of 2008, ranging from the lo-fi jangly noise pop of Throw Me The Statue to the blistering thrash of Goes Cube . We've had relative unknowns (such as The Laughing and Bombadil ), interviews with indie-rock legends (see [...]
After the Arcade Fire became the world's biggest indie band (claiming the title from The Shins), it seemed to foster a need breed of bands incorporating violins, accordions and other non-traditional rock instruments into a band's regular lineup. Despite all the praise I place on noisy bands like Health and AIDS Wolf, I've got to admit I'm a sucker for a good orchestral pop-rock piece from time to time. Ra Ra Riot I had originally intended to use Ra Ra Riot as fodder to spark the rest of the bands mentioned in this [...]

Jean on Jean Tonight's free MP3 is, er, Tonight by orchestral indiepopsters Jean on Jean from Brooklyn. Listen here .

Outhud may have been the hook that got me to listen to Jean on Jean , but it's obviously not what has kept me hanging around. The band, fronted by former Outhud-er Molly Shnick, will probably be never heard beneath the flicker of a disco ball, and that's okay. Their self-titled debut is out next month on Kanine Records, and while it may be too twee for its own good, obvious nods to breezy autumn favorites like Belle & Sebastian are all I need to forget about Shnick's old band, if only [...]
