"You moved in slow degrees/A sudden memory/You're a Leonard Cohen song" - Better Than Ezra, "Under You" "But I was caught, like a fleeting thought / Stuck inside Leonard Cohen's mind" - Mercury Rev, "A Drop In Time" "Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld / So I can sigh eternally" - Nirvana, "Pennyroyal Tea" It's almost unbelievable now to think that we almost never heard Leonard Cohen , the singer. A well-regarded poet from the late [...]

Tweet Photo © Tom Oxley Originally starting life as a four-piece, Australia's Sparkadia released their first album a few years ago, only to break up a year later. However, front man and founder Alex Burnett did not give up on his initial vision. Keeping the band name, he transplanted himself to London, recording his first solo effort as Sparkadia with the production help of Mark Tieku ( Florence And The Machine ). [...]

Pour une fois, je vous propose dans cette chronique un groupe que vous pourrez rapidement aller découvrir sur scène [...]
MEW: [ Forget Her.Live/Bootleg]
From the mid-90's to the mid-00's, I recorded ALOT of music related footage on VHS tapes. Apparently, I had a lot of free time on my hands. For the last few months now, I've been going through those tapes to see what I did record back in those days but also, looking to see what was worth [...]

had he not passed away 14 years ago, the JEFF BUCKLEY would have been celebrating his 45th bgay today. respect to him. wotyougot

Electroacoustic übersite Fluid Radio has added a user forum to its webzine/record label/radio station/online retailer/photography/iPhone app format. Seriously, for the website you thought already had everything... In our first of two novelty sites, The Best Band Ever promises to take user-generated band rosters and create a mock band biography. It's fun, but it's powered externally, so it's a bit choppy. For example, try typing in Jeff Buckley, Niel Peart, David Crosby, Tori Amos, and Justin Bieber, which results in The Peart Justin of Buckley , a "5-piece band [...]

Balthazar B & The Beatitudes are an eclectic collective of musicians. The former name is a moniker for the Parisian artist Balthazar B. His collaborators, the Beatitudes, rotate between doctors, philosophers, and religious scholars. Maxwell and Ernest Beatitude are core contributors and childhood friends of Balthazar B. Each track on their new album, Like Shrapnel, [...]

I've been on a Big Star kick all week, thanks to the trailer for Nothing Can Hurt Me , a new documentary about the band's "massive critical acclaim, dismal commercial failure," and enduring legacy as "pop music's greatest cult phenomenon." The movie's tagline sums it up: I never heard Big Star on the radio, or even at a record shop. I listened to Big Star because other band's told me to via cover songs and tributes. My introduction to Alex Chilton first came through Elliott Smith's hushed cover of "Thirteen" (there are countless takes on [...]

From A(dele) to Z(ola Jesus), female singer-songwriters - or indeed often merely singers - are very much in vogue contemporarily, however few have a voice as capable of redirecting one's train of thought as Torontonian Cold Specks . The enigmatic 23-year-old, now based in London, is the second act to see a debut single released on Transgressive offshoot, paradYse records , and arrives at a time when the blogosphere is still clearing up after the brouhaha incurred by Theme Park's double A-side . Old Stepstone, the B-side to the release, is an almost baptismal a cappella number [...]
Pour cette première découverte de la saison, nous partons à l'autre bout de la Suisse, puisque le groupe de cette semaine nous vient des Grisons . Son nom : And her name is Violet . J'arrête tout de suite nos auditeurs masculins qui sont déjà titillés et qui se demandent qui est cette Violet, est-ce qu'elle est jolie et j'en passe : C'est un piège. And her name is Violet est un duo entièrement masculin. Hannes Barfuss au chant, à la guitare, parfois au synthé et Carlo Caduff à [...]
Forgetful Heart: [ Forgetful Heart ] Jeff Buckley: [ Forget Her ]
When an artist embarks on a solo project at a young age, the pursuit is commendable. Such ambition is shown on the full-length album by Leaves of Green, Imago. The album was created by one James Madole, a 20-year-old student at New York University. On his debut, Madole uses an infusion of vocals, guitar, ukulele, [...]
The words "cover song" typically cause an automatic negative reaction in me. I feel like Blaine Edwards in Men on Film with my constant, "hated it" response (yes, I am dating myself with that one, but go look it up kids-you won't be disappointed). But lately, I've noticed a handful of artists have been much more thoughtful in their choices of songs to cover. I've actually begun to dig around in search of covers in order to fill this new niche in my rotation.
The first song that started me down this path was hearing Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver fame) [...]
We threw a small end of summer bbq that went long into the night. The last few stragglers that remained into the twilight all gathered around the firepit with a drink, and we started playing my favorite game, one that I love to think I invented. It's basically giving everybody a chance to be the DJ for a song, a mix between a jukebox, and that game where you start telling a story and then the next person finishes. I love ...
