That song title might sound familiar to you and if you've been reading this site for the last couple of months or so then you've probably even seen it on here. That's because it's a cover of the always excellent L.A. band The Delta Mirror. I posted about The Shimmies back at the start of July and mentioned back then that they have a pretty good relationship with The Delta Mirror, two of the guys from the band guest-vocalarisering on The Delta Mirror's "He Was Worse Than The Needle He Gave You", and now they're covering [...]
In a few weeks, the new theatre production of The Last Goodbye will make its highly anticipated world debut at the Williamstown Theatre Festival ( August 5th - 20th ). As I wrote back in April , this new creation takes Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" and weaves fifteen songs from my beloved Jeff Buckley throughout it. Under the summer stars, young actors and a rock band will put their hearts into letting Jeff's music speak into the story of the ill-fated lovers we [...]

Although written by the prolific James Shelton in the 1950's, " Lilac Wine " was catapulted to modern day classic status not before 1994 when Jeff Buckley covered it, capturing all its splendor. Now, it's a bit hard to tell if the Cinematic Orchestra version is a Jeff Buckley (likely) or a James Shelton cover, but even though the performance might not be stellar, the video is. Developed by one of my favorite creative agencies, Blind , this minimalistic animated video for Lilac Wine, produced as a tribute to Dr. Martens 50th anniversary, will undoubtedly make your day. Enjoy!

Jeff Buckley - Everybody Here Wants You Cupping the cheeks of her arse with her white-bound stockings as he pulled her close, her smooth skin dragging against the short soft hairs on his legs, Carey had been here before. Erin hadn't had too much to drink, like with some of the other women Carey had brought back to his apartment. She hadn't been impressed by his menial employment, capable of being done by just about anybody. Any fuck straight out of school looking for some cash to set himself up. She hadn't even found [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive In 1997, Jeff Buckley got together with friends Joe Tripician and Fred Reed , an engineer at New York spot Fez where Buckley played frequently, for an afternoon of hanging out that eventually led to recording of the song 'Ozark Melody.' "[Jeff] would come over to my apartment to jam and listen to records," Reed tells Spinner. "It was years later he came up to Joe's place to see my studio and check things out." [...]
It's pretty sweet when a band you really like starts recommending new music to you. That's what Craig from The Delta Mirror did with The Shimmies. Not only did he recommend them but he even sent me a couple of their songs too. The four-piece are from a land far far away in Dagobah System, California, their sound reminiscent of Grizzly Bear meets Conor Oberst meets a Jeff Buckley-fronted Band Of Horses. High-arching guitar build-ups, resonating vocals and drum skins hit like they're going out of fashion make their upcoming album "To All Beloved Enemies" sound like a [...]
This year the Fender Telecaster, as the Guardian has half-heartedly told us , has reached the venerable age of 60. Except that it hasn't, really; the first examples were made in 1949, although the first production guitars surfaced in March 1950, under the "Broadcaster" name. Pickiness aside, the Tele was the first proper solid-body electric guitar, and has been in continual production ever since its introduction. Everyone from Steve Cropper to Frank Black, Bruce Springsteen to Jeff Buckley, Radiohead to the Rolling Stones played one. Famous for its no-nonsense appeal, consisting of a plank [...]

I'm still alive!Apologies for all but leaving our belov'd blog behind while I ran away to culinary school in Montpelier, Vermont and then home to Seattle, but now that life has some pauses I intend to fully make good with the MP3s and such! So let's find a basic starting point: What're the fresh and ripe picking for ears this season? Some might say I've taken a turn to the dark side with a

Our pal - and associate editor of Chicago's Loud Loop Press - Andy Kahn - returns to HT with the first-ever Cover Wars penned by someone other than the column's creator, DaveO. Here's what Andy came up with... Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, off his 1984 album Various Positions , is one of those songs that seems ubiquitous but the original version rarely heard. The song plays out as an epic saga and has a seemingly endless supply of lyrics that never drag on if delivered properly. It's been covered nearly as many times as [...]

Frank Yang I've already document thoughts in this space about Holly Miranda on record - specifically her debut The Magician's Private Library - and Holly Miranda live - specifically one of her day shows at SxSW - so I'm a bit short on lead-in thoughts to her show at the El Mocambo in Toronto this past Thursday; her second solo appearance but first headlining. I do, however, have some thoughts on Montreal's Braids , who were supporting her on a handful of dates [...]

I always wondered how some of rock's greatest artists would have fared, had they tried to reach fame via "American Idol." What do you think Randy would say about Bob Dylan's singing voice? Do you think Paula or Kara would like Mick Jagger? And how hysterical would it be to see Simon's face during a Joe Cocker performance? Well - thank god there was no "American Idol" back in the day. One guy who would have done really well on a superficial talent show like "Idol" was Tim Buckley. He was a singer [...]

I've had a long, off-and-on relationship with the album Grace by Jeff Buckley. It has come through for me when I have felt completely lost and don't know where else to look. It's true; I have gone long periods of months or years without it, but what keeps me inevitably coming back to it is Buckley's voice. If I had the pipes he had, I would gladly opt to never speak a word again. I would sing when spoken to. Modern rock [...]
This week, I question Alan Moore's ability to write an opera (and anything post- Watchmen ) and generally stumble through stuff about Grizzly Bear , Jeff Buckley and Weezer , among others, until we hit the bread and butter of the day: the Insane Clown Posse , a usual point of discussion for myself and Erin Keane. The Music News Show (4/27/10)
Playbill has announced a casting call for a new musical titled The Last Goodbye , a "modern day retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in the East Village and to the songs of Jeff Buckley." If Green Day can put up a musical on the Great White Row, why the hell can't Jeff Buckley ? Musicals and rock music usually make for star cross'd lovers, often taking the worst facets of each art-form and mashing them together producing less than stellar results. Failure after failure after mega [...]

It's been awhile since I've written on this blog. Been doing some writing about baseball for Laballin.com just to show myself that I can be versatile & not just focus on writing about music. It's fun, but I was feeling a bit nostalgic about music today listening to Jeff Buckley's cover of "When the Levee Breaks" & so I sought out the original. Contrary to popular belief it was not written by Jimmy Page or Robert Plant but instead in 1929 by Kansas Joe McCoy & Memphis Minnie about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 [...]
