It seemed wrong to do anything outsi de a tribute to the late Jason Molina. Since learning of his passing the other weekend, Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. have been dominating my playlists; in particular the former. Given this fact, I focused on the sub-genres Molina often found himself in - folk, folk-rock, and alt-country. Artists like Bill Callahan, Norfolk & Western, Brown Bird and Hayden all made the cut. Check out the play list below. "Simpletons" by The Bats off Free All the Monsters [...]
True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today’s age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]

I've been in several bands. Scratch that, millions of bands. I never planned on blogging about it but it's interesting to chart the changes and friends that came and went over the years as I moved around and broke up/started new outfits. Lemme see if I can name them all, in order: Demolish (sixth-grade project with one Matt Willims , who moved on to KICK ASS in Smash Velvet and Bullet Club in Seattle; he's [...]
Portland, Oregon's Krist Krueger, Southerly has announced the release of a lush, layered new work titled Champion Of The Noisy Negativists on February 19th. The digital/CD/vinyl EP via the Self Group imprint follows the artist's celebrated 2007 album, Storyteller And The Gossip Columnist (Greyday Records). Unlike the previous disc, Champion is a largely instrumental affair, using vocals as additional layers, rather than the music's guide. Listen to the MP3 for "Trials" from Champion here and "Soldiers" from Storyteller here. To kick off the EP release, Southerly launches a tour throughout Europe with Kevin Devine & The Goddamn Band beginning February [...]
As I see the written words "Best of 2009," I have a gut reaction to dismiss the very idea as an oxymoron. Like when someone who would rather not be awake responds with "What's good about it?" when greeted by "Good morning." As writer Marc Kevin Hall recently observed , 2009 can be summed up by one word: loss. This was certainly true for me; I lost my job to the recession, and, worse, a longtime friend to death. The music community also suffered losses: Michael Jackson, Jeff Hanson, Vic Chestnutt to name a few. So far, [...]

The summer of 2003 was a hot one in eastern Washington, and my concrete bunker of an apartment contained the heat like no other. Granted, the above image wasn't shot by yours truly until 2004, but it sure seemed hot enough to ignite even the least combustible of items. I wrapped up my undergraduate that December, which was cold as Antarctica, and upon that milestone I moved to Seattle. It was a good year for the Northwest; many of my favorite albums came from Seattle labels like Sub Pop and Barsuk. As for the list, I've [...]

Beyonce thrills at the Target Center, Mark Mallman releases new music video & next week's best new releases.
In Minnesota we have an outstanding little project called Northern Outpost, and Borangutan regulars are very familiar with this. It's a pride and joy of Minnesota. A similar project has sprung up in California recently called DirtyLaundry TV, where artists are interviewed while doing their laundry in a laundromat. Sweet. Just sweet. Here's a recent episode [...]
Unfortunately, the police investigation provides no definite answers.
Today is June 19, 2009, and I desperately wish I could figure out how to configure expanded memory on my pc. I have this old copy of Master of Orion, see... Awhile back I posted a borangupoll question about David Hasselhoff, that center of so much German eros. Today while cybersurfin' I had a peculiar encounter [...]

Jeff Hanson, Minnesota-based musician, died unexpectedly and was found on Friday, in his St. Paul apartment, apparently of an accidental fall at the age of 31. He had released his third album, Madam Owl , last August on the label Kill Rock Stars, who had this to say: We are deeply shocked and saddened to report that Jeff Hanson passed away on June 5, 2009 in his home, a victim of a terrible accident. Jeff has been a part of the KRS family since 2003. Jeff Hanson was an amazing artist, a riotously funny person, [...]

Hanson había publicado tres discos, Son , Jeff Hanson y Madam Owl . Descanse en paz, vaya semanas que llevamos. [...]

Target Market were the download of the day yesterday on eMusic. It was pretty awesome. And while we're talking about deals - don't forget that Mouthful Of Bees' "The End" is still $1.99 or $5 in our online store, check out the details here . Music in the Office: *MP3: Jeff Hanson - "Hiding Behind The Moon" *MP3: Yacht - "Psychic City"

Sad news was released last Friday, as the independent music world lost an amazing talent, and the world lost an amazing individual. Jeff Hanson was found dead in his new apartment; preliminary reports are calling it an accidental fall . I met Jeff a few years back when he performed at a small art gallery in Moscow, ID. Everyone always talks about how his voice was like no other, but for me it was that coupled with the passion in which he relayed his songs to his audience. Jeff [...]
