Fresh off the exciting news that Neutral Milk Hotel will reunite for a small handful of shows next October, here's a look at In the Aeroplane Over the Sea from Jeff Mangum's intimate solo show at MASS MoCA this past February. Mangum sported a Duck Dynasty caliber beard and Julian Koster laid down a fantastic solo on the saw while everyone in attendance sang along. This band has become shrouded in myth and garnered legions of new fans in the 15 years since they [...]

I was listening to Neutral Milk Hote l the first time I felt anything like transcendence. It was three o'clock on a Monday morning; I was ignoring homework and cocooning myself in the band's '96 bootleg "Live at the Aquarius". Jeff Mangum played that show solo, testing out songs that would later appear on his seminal album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea . Unlike many of the live recordings that started to litter P2P networks in the early aughts, "Aquarius" sounds warm, quiet, and clear. The room is silent save for Mangum and his acoustic guitar. There's [...]
When Jeff Mangum rose from his self imposed obscurity during Occupy Wall Street, few predicted it would result in a full blown Neutral Milk Hotel reunion. While the aforementioned "full blown" depiction is up for debate, the fact remains that the band has announced their first dates since 1998. While rumors of a full slate of international dates are in the air, we have at least five confirmed NMH dates on the books. 10-22 Athens, GA - 40 Watt Club 10-23 Athens, GA - 40 Watt Club 10-25 Asheville, NC - Thomas [...]

Well today was the day that indie-rock fans had been hoping for ever since the reclusive Jeff Mangum returned from performing live and touring back in 2011, as it was announced that Neutral Milk Hotel will be reuniting for a series of shows later this year. The influential Athens, Georgia-based band , who only released two full-length studio albums, including the much revered In the Aeroplane over the Sea , have been on "hiatus" since 1998. The group, which will feature Mangum, Scott Spillane, Julian Koster and Jeremy Barnes, currently have five scheduled shows [...]

After a lengthy hiatus (15 years since their last show), Neutral Milk Hotel is back - as in, yes, they are reuniting - and will be heading on tour before the end of the year. The lineup will include the same one that made music and performed post-1996, meaning that Jeff Mangum, Scott Spillane, Julian [...]

Ty Segall at Bumbershoot 2012 / photo by Amber Zbitnoff Today's a big day for Ty Segall , that is if the legendary scuzz garage king can have big days anymore after his many releases, shows, and side projects. First of all his band Fuzz released a video that features the trio playing "Fuzz's Fourth Dream" at Burgerama in LA. The video starts with a little trickle of "Rhapsody in Blue" for whatever reason, before following them to the show. Next up Segall has a new track streaming - "Music For [...]
This is exactly the kind of news I needed to hear today. Jeff Mangum will reunite Neutral Milk Hotel later this year for a tour! Only five dates have been announced so far, but considering the last tour was in 1998, this is a great start. It all kicks off October 22nd in the band's hometown of Athens, GA. Stay tuned for more. 10/22 – Athens, GA @ 40 Watt Club (w/ Elf Power) 10/23 – Athens, GA @ 40 Watt Club (w/ Half Japanese) 10/25 – Asheville, NC @ Thomas Wolfe Auditorium (w/ Half Japanese [...]

After a couple years of highly successful, seemingly stress-free shows, Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum is re-joining with the band that made him a record collection staple. Given how much fun he seemed to have on his solo tours (and how frequently he brought out Elephant 6 collaborators on stage), it's no surprise that [...]
"I'll stop getting fucked up if that means I get my life back" contron , aka Floridian daydreamer Connor Parker nihilistically begins on the angstily entitled, if impeccably executed i'll stop getting fucked up if that means i get my life back(& i'll stop blaming you for things i did myself, & i'll stop listening to everyone who said i'm worthless) aka the how have i been such a fuckkjing idiot? song as the precocious East Coast troubadour constructs a rickety shantey instantly reminiscent of Jeff Mangum's woebegone songs of love, unrequited lust and unending longing. It's a comparison which, [...]
The legacy of D. Boon's remarkable musical shorthand still matters today, as these covers - some his, some of his songs - will attest.

This was my first opportunity to see Jeff Mangum and I jumped at the chance to see him by purchasing my ticket months before the show. Although this will not be his final tour, he does not plan to return to the same cities he has already played during this solo acoustic tour. This might explain his decision to play the quaint little Brooklyn Arts Center in downtown Wilmington. The show was opened up by folk rock duo, Tall Firs. After their set, Jeff Mangum took the stage and the crowd was elated. His performance was very stripped-down [...]
