Things I did/saw at Monday night's Elephant Six Holiday Surprise Tour : • Waited in the rain, making my newly shorn haircut resemble that of Top Gun -era Tom Cruise, post flight simulation training. • Saw Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum walk by me on the steps while waiting to get into the show. He was wearing a red flannel. I, freaking out inside my mind, turned to my wife and said, "Dude, I feel like I'm seeing Kurt Cobain right now" (and not because of the red flannel). [...]
Not that this hasn't been everywhere by now, but just in case. One Jeff Mangum has performed the first Neutral Milk Hotel song he's played in public in 7 years-the absolutely beautiful b-side Engine (here in Columbus, OH, also played in Pittsburgh)-while onstage with the Elephant 6 tour. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean NMH will be touring the known universe, or releasing a new record or anything anytime soon, but Mr Mangum's increasing appearances in public lately do have some appetites whetted and hopes raised.

Considering the fact that NMH is a cult indie band that's been in suspended animation for years -- and that leader Jeff Mangum is notoriously reclusive -- I clicked on her bulletin with curiosity. Reports from our message board about last night's Wexner Center show: So I stood about a foot away from Jeff Mangum's right elbow as he played Engine to end the E6 Holiday Surprise tour with Julian Koster on singing saw. Anybody who knows anything about Jeff Mangum knows what a momentous occasion this was. Truly, ridiculously, unbelievably unreal. Jeff Mangum, frontman of the ever-genius Neutral Milk Hotel , made an appearance last night at the New York stop of the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise Tour. He's been reclusive for the past however many years, and I had always heard that he was in an insane asylum due to a bad acid trip. That doesn't appear to be the case. It's good to have him back.
