After spending a vast amount of time out of the spotlight, suddenly Jeff Mangum is everywhere. Radiohead my not have made it to the Occupy Wall Street protests last week, but the Neutral Milk Hotel singer did yesterday, where he played a 30-minute long acoustic set. This follows Mangum's three-night stand in Asbury Park, NJ, where he appeared at the ATP festival and did a headlining show of his own. Songs included "Holland, 1945," "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea," "The King of Carrot Flowers Part 1," "Oh Comely" and a cover of Minutemen's "Themselves." Check it out in [...]
Don't know if you've noticed, but Jeff Mangum (now perhaps safe to be called the one-time famously reclusive Jeff Mangum), he once upon a time of Neutral Milk Hotel and songs that have become iconic in his downtime fame, has been decidedly more available , more present as of late. Never has this been more the case than Tuesday night, when Mangum showed up to serenade the occupiers of Wall St., dipping into his back catalog of NMH tricks (plus a Minuteman cover) and playing joyously in the process. He even [...]
Now this is an amazing video to catch right before I decide to hit the sack tonight. Thanks to Badass Digest for posting this gem of Jeff Mangum (the lyricist, vocalist and guitarist of the band Neutral Milk Hotel ) performing an acoustic set Tuesday evening in front of the Occupy Wall Street protesters attending the mass demonstration on Wall Street against financial greed and corruption. I have to say it's still strange seeing Mangum out there in public after being a recluse for years. He's [...]
Jeff Mangum surprised the Occupy Wall Street protestors late Tuesday night for an eight-song set of singalongs. I'm not sure if this makes up for the whole Radiohead hoax , but plenty of people were still excited to see the reclusive indie folk hero. Before you regard this as completely random, remember that Jeff was just at ATP and he'll play shows at NYC's Town Hall later this month. Perhaps you were on Twitter when we found out about the livestream; in any event, Jeff's entire set is here for you [...]

Jeff Mangum Occupy Wall Street Video Equipped with an appropriate cover of Minutemen's iconoclastic punk anthem "Themselves," Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum continued his return to the spotlight tonight with a high-profile, impromptu set at the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York. In addition to his rousing rendition of that tune, Mangum incited the crowd with plenty of Aeroplane favorites ("Holland, 1945," "Oh Comely," "Two-Headed Boy," et al.) as well. The full unplugged show was caught on tape above.

thanks to Bao Nguyen for this pic in real time... So Radiohead didn't happen , but, while Portishead was playing at Hammerstein Ballroom Tuesday night (10/4), Jeff Mangum made a surprise live appearance down at Wall Street in support of the Occupy Wall Street protestors! If you weren't there, maybe you caught the live stream ? If not, watch it now below... Continue reading "Jeff Mangum played Occupy Wall Street! (watch the video)" at BrooklynVegan.com

Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel has just finished playing the Occupy Wall Street protest. The protest has been full of rumored performances, from Radiohead to Paul McCartney, but Mangum has actually come out to support the cause (along with celebrities like Michael Moore, Susan Sarandon, and Roseanne Barr). Tweet The best part about Jeff Mangum playing for Occupy Wall Street was everyone singing along. I'm not sure how many were actual protesters and how many were fans who knew about it and turned up, but (despite the poor quality video) it's still great to watch. Tracks played included Neutral Milk Hotel songs "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea", "Holland, 19453, "The King of Carrot Flowers Part 13 , and "Oh Comely" , along [...]

Jeff Mangum isn't on the list , but one could argue that the elusive frontman of Neutral Milk Hotel might be classifiable as an "outsider musician", much like Daniel Johnston (who he covered on Friday again ) and Roky Erickson (who he covered on Sunday again ). Those covers aside, Jeff's three ATP Asbury Park setlists, religous experiences for many, stuck 100% to songs he wrote. At last night's show (10/3), Jeff was also joined on stage for two songs by show opener A Hawk and a [...]

Pluck all your silly strings And bend all your notes for me Soft silly music is meaningful, magical. I never thought I would see Jeff Mangum play. A notable recluse, he was underwater for over a decade, popping his head to the surface only to join a group song or two at friends' shows once or twice since the turn of the millennium. Last year, he broke that silence to play a five song set at the Chris Knox benefit in New York. People cried in the audience. In [...]

Filed under: News Jason Persse for AOL This year's All Tomorrow's Parties was subtitled 'I'll Be Your Mirror,' and on Sunday (Oct. 2), as the three-day festival came to a close, two of the marquee performers seemed like fun-house reflections of each other. One is shy and sensitive, the other brash and unapologetic. One writes aching, abstract songs, the other political tirades. One keeps out of the public eye. The other fronts Public Enemy . [...]
