Woodstock Confirms 40th Anniversary At Original Location With Original Performers To Headline

Woodstock Confirms 40th Anniversary At Original Location With Original Performers To Headline As we told you about two months ago, Woodstock promoter Michael Lang was in search of a spot to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. And after scoping out Prospect Park's Long Meadow for the event, it has now been confirmed that the festival will instead be getting back to its roots; taking place at its original location in Bethel Woods, with a handful of the original performers added on to the roster. According to the Associated Press [via The [...]

Woodstock Veterans To Appear at 40th Anniversary

Woodstock Veterans To Appear at 40th Anniversary Well, they're calling it "Heroes Of Woodstock," or the "Bethel Woods Music Festival" - it depends on where you look. But on Saturday, August 15, the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in upstate New York will host a music festival on the grounds of the original 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Festival. The performers listed include the Levon Helm Band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Ten Years After, Canned Heat, Mountain (with Leslie West and Corky Laing), and Country Joe McDonald. They're not going to have it in a wild, open field - this festival will [...]

Pullin' 'Tubes: A True WTF Video

Written By: Big Papi They sure don't make videos like Jefferson Starship's No Way Out anymore. A "wtf" weird fest for the ages... perhaps you remember this one sandwiched between Martha Quinn, The Cars' You Might Think and Wang Chung's Dance Hall Days on MTV back in '84. Sometimes you can't even say, "well it was the '80s," to let this video mishap slide by. I guess we'll just blame it on the coke. This Jefferson Starship video – No Way Out was launched somewhere between the surnames Airplane and [...]

Throwback Thursdays: The Perfect Sh*t Storm

Throwback Thursdays: The Perfect Sh*t Storm Insert feces where appropriate. A lifetime of media consumption rarely makes up for the years wasted in front of a screen—for every episode of Freaks and Geeks, we had to sit through Punky Brewster , and for every John Ritter there's a Dane Cook waiting to riff on the profundity of hamburgers and bees. But sometimes the karmic slot machine flashes cherries and rewards us with a perfect shit storm. By "perfect shit storm" I mean a perfect storm of shit, filling our eyes and ears, courtesy of any given celebrity [...]

Jefferson Starship singer Cathy Richardson stands up for the right of same-sex couples to wed (after Proposition 8 passes)

Jefferson Starship singer Cathy Richardson stands up for the right of same-sex couples to wed (after Proposition 8 passes) Rock musician Cathy Richardson and her spouse Rachel Rose Regan have vowed not only "to have and to hold as long as love shall last," but also to "stand up for the right of same-sex couples to wed." Richardson and Regan were married in a private ceremony above Napa, CA on October 29, 2008. Universalist Minister KK Ledford officiated the sunrise ceremony in a hot air balloon over Napa Valley, witnessed by a small group of family and friends. Singer-Songwriter Richardson is best known for her starring role as Janis Joplin [...]

We Built This City, Starship

We Built This City, Starship Jefferson Starship was well past their glory days - beginning in the late '60s as Jefferson Airplane - when the group finally disintegrated following 1984's Nuclear Furniture . Following that album, Paul Kantner, the sole, remaining founding member, left the band and took legal action to prevent the rest of the act from using the name Jefferson. Although the group had continued to have hits, the band's sound had become bland, formulaic album rock, virtually indistinguishable from their contemporaries. Soldiering on, the rechristened Starship issued their first album under the truncated moniker in the late summer of [...]

Flashback to the 80's #1

Flashback to the 80's #1 In light of the growing trend in pop culture, I decided it was only fitting to feature some of the 80's music that inspires singers and bands today. Madonna, Michael Jackson, Guns n Roses, Pat Benatar, Starship, Heart, Bon Jovi, to name only a few were some of the growing trends in the mid and late 80's. Their legacy, of course, most definitely lasts with many hit singles and trends of it's time. What are some of the bands that you or your parents grew up listening to? If you'd be interested in having them featured on here, don't hesitate [...]

No Way Out, Jefferson Starship

Jefferson Starship was a band in transition in 1984. Far removed from their glories as Jefferson Airplane, one founding member - singer Marty Balin - had already left the fold and guitarist Paul Kantner would soon do the same. The group's album sales had been declining for half a decade and they were still more than a year from their successful reinvention as the more pop-oriented Starship. The result was the album Nuclear Furniture which found Jefferson Starship embracing a more slick, keyboard-oriented direction which wasn't a completely comfortable fit for the one-time psychedelic/acid rock unit. [...]

Marty Balin's Prettiest Song

I'm not a huge devoted fan of the Airplane or Starship, but I do love a number of their songs, and I think Red Octopus is a great record. I was surprised to find some shows on archive today, and even more surprised when I streamed a show from The Tin Angel in 2000, to hear the long-lost syrup "Hearts", from Marty Balin's first (only?) solo record. What a damned pretty song this is. hearts mp3 whole show here and it's a nice one, not quite unplugged but [...]
