Oh, yea, Mixtapes! Thought I would jump in with a Saturday playlist/Mixtape thing because it is a good way to get more bang for your buck around this damn music blogs. It is also a way to just listen to more music, so it is kind of a win-win situation. Today I have a new demo, repeat poster, couple of new album tracks and a track I missed from last year. All great tunes and I am getting down to business right now. Saturday Mixtape [...]

As I wrote just over a year ago in a 2-part feature on How To Be A Coverblogger [ Pt. 1 / Pt. 2 ], keeping a coverblog requires a touch of obsession, an itch to live the writing life, and a willingness to keep a keen eye on a select handful of trusted sources. But though we watch the other coverbloggers carefully throughout the year, we are folkies first and foremost here at Cover Lay Down. And - as we noted atop our year's end mix - some of the [...]

I did this the other year and it went over pretty well I have to say. One thing about putting up a list of music that you are saying is your "best", "favourite" or "Top 12 of the year" is that your actual opinion is involved. What? Who needs opinion as it is rarely not swayed by what you think is good or what you might think fits your persona or what your readers want you to like. Well let's get rid of that elephant in the room and go with our iTunes playcounts [...]

Today sees the annual pilgrimage to that place where we throw caution to the wind and provide you dear readers with our opinions on what is our most bestest albums ever recorded in the current year. Yes, the best by way of favourite releases that deserve recognition for their amazing talents in the art of folk and folk inspired music. Some may not be your cup of tea and some are going to feel right at home - overall, I think they are all frickin' fantastic albums and I whole heartily recommend every last one of them. The [...]

Somewhere between Milwaukee, Rockford, IL and Chicago sits Whitewater, WI . Whitewater is home of the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater (alma mater of John Belushi if you believe Wikipedia) as well as folk/country/Americana singer-songwriter Jeffrey Foucault . Foucault has been spinning his particular yarns into song for going on ten years and has performed in support of complimentary artists like Greg Brown, Todd Snider and Chris Smither. His 2006 album Ghost Repeater was produced by Bo Ramsey and included a few of his regular sidemen- Rick Cicalo on bass, Steve Hayes on drums, as [...]
Slowly getting energy to get back to blogging. Once again, things like this make it easier. Please enjoy an acoustic video session from Jeffrey Foucault performing the track Everybody's Famous from his Slowcoustic top 10 of the year album "Horse Latitudes". October means we're happily knee-deep in baseball, surrounded by seasonal pumpkin ales, and, regrettably, wrist-deep in the slimy insides of jack-o-lanterns. Music has been my quiet oasis. I figure it's high time I stop futzing over my autumn mix and share it already. The fall mix is one of my favorites to make. In addition to being generally hyperaware of everything around me in life, especially subtexts and undercurrents, I notice an acute sharpening of my senses every time the seasons change. It's why I make you guys these seasonal mixes: as everything in the natural world [...]
Thought I would post on my top LAST.FM artists of the last 6 months for your perusal and judgment. While not completely accurate of my listening as there is still listen to music non-stop during my commute to work (2 hours daily) and my sad basement day job that don't get scrobbled to Last.fm for these charts. Overall I feel they reflect what I am listening to, but some artists may be up or down a spot or two. Let's get on with it! ~Slowcoustic's Last 6 months of top artists playlist~ [...]

Live: Jeffrey Foucault. It gets personal.
Download country-rock covers of three Neil Young chestnuts by Jeffrey Foucault, Stephen Brower and the Silent Majority, and Landon A.R. Coleman.

(photo by Nick Wilkes) Many do it. Many will continue to do it. Many don't do it this well. Covering Neil Young is almost a staple of any Country/Folk/Americana artist, but it isn't something to take lightly. It is all too easy to jam a cover and release it to the masses - we all know we are a blogger-coversong-world these days. It just usually isn't done where you feel like an artist borrows from another and if you didn't know that little fact, that the song could be their own. [...]

This second and final grouping of albums are not necessarily greater than yesterday's grouping, but for lack of scientific research these could be considered my #5 through #1 favourite releases of 2011 thus far. Once again: do you agree, have suggestions, have ridicule? ~~ The Deep Dark Woods - The Place I Left Behind Okay, I need a bit of flexibility from you folks as this album isn't even released yet (but it is on Aug. 2nd, 2011 on Six Shooter Records here in [...]
Jeffrey Foucault - Horse Latitudes

Dylan's 70th birthday is nigh upon us, and as he seems to still be walking the earth after the predicted Rapture has come and gone, we can only assume that either he wasn't any worthier than we, or - once again - the extremists have proved themselves no more able to predict God's timing than the rest of us. Me, I'm quite proud of myself for not giving in to the temptation to release a mess of helium-filled blow-up dolls to the heavens down on main street. Instead, I spent a long [...]

*top banner image from Nick Wilkes Jeffrey Foucault released his most recent album on May 3rd and it is very quickly becoming one of the strongest Americana albums I have heard in a long time. Horse Latitudes should satiate the fans looking for original content and even make them wonder why he hasn't done it sooner. Known recently for collaborations and cover albums (albeit pretty darn good ones), it is nice to see some absolutely excellent music from Foucault again. This album is 10 tracks of beautifully spun [...]
To celebrate today's crop of releases, here are new mp3s from A Sequence Of Ghosts, Architecture In Helsinki, Dave Depper, Breanne Düren, Fleet Foxes, Foot Patrol, Jason Forrest, Jeffrey Foucault, Joel Jerome, Les Blanks, Mount Moriah and James Pants. Also, vote for your favorite of today's new releases.
Yesterday, I told you about Horse Latitudes , the new CD from Jeffrey Foucault. This is a tremendous video from something called the Sound Pass Sessions featuring a couple of new songs and a couple of classics. In order, the songs are... "Starlight & Static," "Last Night I Dreamed of Television," "Cross of Flowers," and "Train to Jackson." And here's another Foucault classic... the title track from 2006's Ghost Repeater .

Jeffrey Foucault - Horse Latitudes Jeffrey Foucault's Horse Latitudes (May 3) is his first non-collaborative collection of new material since 2006's Ghost Repeater . In five years since, Foucault has released a collection of John Prine covers to go along with collaborations with Mark Erelli , Redbird , and poet Lisa Olstein . Horse Latitudes finds Foucault once again practicing his own particular brand [...]
