Portraits - "D (Edit)" Portraits is a new Bay Area "supergroup" of likeminded drone, ambient, and noise artists, rounding up the talents of Jefre Cantu-Ledesma ( Root Strata , Tarentel ), Evan Caminiti and Jon Porras ( Barn Owl ), Gregg Kowalsky and Marielle Jakobsons ( Date Palms ), Maxwell Croy ( EN ) and others in one unstoppable ensemble. For their self-titled debut on Important , the collective channels its powers into two [...]
Destello from Ivan Villafuerte on Vimeo . A certain juxtaposition of image and sound that gets into just the right zone of resonance and removal: videos by Ivan Villafuerte , stumbled on while researching d_rradio . The above features "The Atomium - Part Two" by Stars of the Lid and "Early Evening Reverie" by Auburn Lull. More of the vision thing: "Still In A Storm" and "Death Of The Fair Green Veil" by d_rradio Opsin from Ivan Villafuerte on [...]
The Los Angeles Times has a tad bit more journalistic integrity than I do, so you're more likely to trust their opinion than you are mine. The reviewer on hand at the Walt Disney Concert Hall was far less impressed than I was with "Paradise Lost." But I wasn't there trying to imagine the concert [...]

27th April 2011 - Cube Cinema Jefre Cantu Ledesma , of Tarentel fame lingered in morhphic clouds of sound, puckering them in nodding spasms and guitar crackle. Ugly feedbacks growing out of this, sucked back into tidy hooks of syncopated ambience, gelatinous drones and pulsing filigrees of harmony... 'Little girl lost' vocals from Lisa McGee ( vestals , Higuma ) flowing through the spider veined statics, all phantomised and [...]
I feel like we should all be jamming out to "Right Now" (and drinking Crystal Pepsi?), because this is the day we've all been waiting for. It's time to stop living in the past and start living in the moment: my annual list of the one-hundred best albums of 2010 is finally ready for you to feast your eyes on it. Look at it. Look at it how you would a naked slut as she spreads her legs for you. It's here for the taking. As is customary now, I've decided not to write blurbs for all 100 [...]

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma Love Is A Stream (2010, Type) RIYL = Tim Hecker, Belong, Fennesz It feels like some time since I've listened to shoegazer droning this syrupy delicious. Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, of Tanaterel, The Alps, and the Roots Strata label, is set to eclipse the work he contributed to his bands and label with this, his second solo album, Love Is A Stream . The album suffocates with pure, noisy beauty. Cantu-Ledesma has conjured a deep, layered, grinding sound that burrows into the subconscious and lays hard against the pleasure centers of the brain, [...]

Having spent time in both Tarentel and The Alps, not to mention co-founding RSTB favorite label Root Strata, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma already has enough high clout to gain instant praise around here; but add to that his solo work that drags My Bloody Valentine's shoegaze noise palette through Grouper's discordant haze and needless to say something special is happening. Love is a Stream starts with the noisiest growl of shoegaze feedback and uses it to slowly crumble the gauzy film of dream pop's fragile center. Then, just as his compositions begin to shape up as torrents of seismic clatter, [...]

If it isn't already the case, the quality of this new release means that Jefre Cantu-Ledesma will soon be far better known for his solo work than for anything he has done as a member of Tarentel or Alps, more so even than his stewardship of the rarely less-than-essential Root Strata label. If there is any justice at all, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma will soon be very well known indeed, for this is noise-pop album is as good as these things come. If My Bloody Valentine were to end their interminable silence by releasing this tomorrow, it would probably sell [...]

The final track on Love is a Stream , 'Mirrors Death,' is so achingly beautiful it worms its way into the mind and juggles everything that's inside. Its fluid, flowing drones support a continually squelched guitar melody, a melody that yearns to escape its distorted and gated effects, but cannot. It is a turbulent, liquid melody atop a placid foundation, fractured and pure. When Love is a Stream ended, I was left with an enormous sense of affirmation, a blissful vision of what I've always believed: that love is dimensional and arcane, is sonorous and noisy, explosive [...]
No opinions today, just news. The New York Film Festival started today, and next weekend is the 14th annual Views From the Avant-Garde , a mini-festival programmed by Mark McElhatten and Gavin Smith (editor of Film Comment ) intended to showcase the best recent experimental work in film and video, along with related works from the avant-garde repertory. The festival is kicking off Thursday night with three unreleased reels by the late French actor-cum-director Pierre Clémenti, known for his roles in films by Buñuel, Rocha, Bertolucci, Visconti and others. Friday focuses on individual showcases [...]

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Shining Skull Breath OOPs is going to be a regular (Weekly? Every Friday?) post where I'll upload copies of albums that I have that are out of print so that all you fine folks can join in on the fun. Jefre Cantu-Ledesma runs Root Strata and is the founding dude of Tarentel , two totally awesome things that automatically make JCL worth checking out regardless [...]

For the second time in one week, we have a guest writer today. Readers, please say hello to Sam. I met Sam seven years ago, and after a rocky introduction, we became fast friends. I've always envied his writing style, so I'm honored he chose to share a story from his daily life with my audience today. I think once you reach the end of his tale, you'll love Sam as much as I do. He even submitted his own Mix Tape, which I will post either on Friday or Saturday of this week. As I stated last Friday, if [...]
