Jenna Nichols - New York singer/songwriter (by way of Pittsburgh) readies her self-described "more mature, fuller sounding" sophomore album, successor to 2008's Curled Up Toes In Red Maryjanes ...a regular at Brooklyn and Lower East Side pass-the-hat music clubs...new album is produced by the fine multi-instrumentalist and studio knob-twiddler Jimi Zhivago (Kim Taylor, Ollabelle) // Release : The Blooming Hour (late May) // Sounds like : swaying, halcyon folk/pop with some lushly embroidered production on the edges...the subtleties may take a second listen to discern, but the effort is rewarded...Nichols is in [...]

Kelley McRae is a singer/songwriter who draws heavily from the same school of sound as Regina Spektor. She is from Mississippi and technically calls Brooklyn home these days although you're more likely to find her on the road in her VW van touring from town-to-town in support of her musical exploits – specifically her most recent album Highrises In Brooklyn . The album was more or less self-released and you grab it in exchange for an email address from her website. Her music sets the scene perfectly for any New York coffee shop or for a fireplace in [...]

Yes please! I was in NYC two years ago on Valentines night when we went to hear the romantic sounds of The Gutter Twins in the Bowery Ballroom. Lovely memories. I'd love to be heading over to NYC for the above gig featuring two of our best songwriters and story tellers with support from the wonderful Jenna Nichols. I seem to 'Sigh' alot on this blog. Geography and money [lack of ...] are terrible things! Here's a beautiful love song from Roesy recorded for [...]

Every year I get really into Christmas music sometime in mid November so that by the time Christmas day comes along I'm normally ' ... if I hear another Christmas jingle and bells I'll go mad ....'! This year isn't much different! Here's the compilation list of Irish Christmas Music posted on the blog over the last few weeks! 1. Paddy Casey - The Power of Love 2. David Hopkins - Merry Christmas My Love 3. Juliet Turner - A Winter's Tale 4. Stellarsound ft Funzo - Don't [...]
Comes from Heather's annual Christmas mix over at I Am Fuel, You Are Friends . A low-key song that features a sweet sax solo. Indecently, she did use a track I featured last Random Friday . Listen: Jenna Nicholls ∞ Winter (Curled Up Toes In Red Mary Janes) What is your favorite this week? Leave a hullabaloo. Music moment Don't Leave Lyrics Toni Braxton [...]

Well today is a snow day in my part of Colorado, bringing everything outside to a deadened, frozen, thickly-blanketed crawl. It's gorgeous and quiet, and perfect weather for putting the finishing touches on my annual Christmas mix. I do love Christmas music, as you might remember from past years , but I also have a picky palate and am always amazed when I turn on the radio (as I did last night while we played cards) at how many many Christmas songs should have never been made. If I have to hear "Wonderful Christmastime" again, [...]

I don't have too many big ambitions in life. One of them is to bring the family to New York over the Christmas holiday. How many iconic images do we get of New York in Wintertime? How many movies are set over Christmas in New York? It'll happen sometime for us! One of New York's best songwriters is Jenna Nicholls who is also one quarter of 'Fairplay Collective '. Blog favourites Brendan O'Shea, Michael Brunnock [songwriter with Little Palace] and Mark Dignam complete the collective. In 2008 Jenna released an excellent debut album; 'Curled Up Toes In [...]
Jenna Nicholls has the sort of voice that entrances within a couple of seconds of coming into contact with it. What makes it even more special is the fact the songs she writes are so memorable. Nicholls is part of a new folk movement based in Greenwich Village called the Fairplay Collective (there are a smattering of Irish troubadours in there). Her voice is distinctive but from time to time you
