Reuben Cox The Toronto Urban Roots Festival has existed under a shroud of mystery since its existence emerged late last month , and even with its grand unveiling last week, it still only had two acts on its opening night - She & Him and Camera Obscura - to its roster. A promising start, but still eliciting more questions than excitement. That balance has arguably skewed in the other direction considerably with yesterday's announcement of Belle & Sebastian as the headlining act on the festival's closing night, July 7. That they're [...]
Canadian songwriter Jenn Grant returns from the giddy retro-pop high of her Juno-nominated 2011 album Honeymoon Punch with The Beautiful Wild , a sharply focused but diverse new collection of intelligent, finely-crafted indie pop songs. With a theme of "finding the courage to lose oneself in the wilderness, in all of its savage and sublime experiences", The Beautiful Wild gets a belated but welcome U.S. release February 5 after dropping last September up north. Since her 2005 debut, the Halifax, Nova Scotia native has found a significant following within [...]

I assumed it was the trucks outside that suddenly woke me, but as I listened to their grunting engines the familiar pain set in and I knew I was widely awake because I'd dreamt about him again. The nice part about having a friend on the opposite coast is that you can text them at 4am and get a response, he called back and we talked. We haven't been together in years but have been good at talking weekly for half a decade now, despite living multiple continents apart at times. But things have suddenly changed, as they are wont [...]
XPN welcomes Erin McKeown to Johnny Brenda's tonight. The singer-songwriter released MANIFESTRA through her own label TVP Records last week, an album featuring friends Anais Mitchell, David Wax Museum, Ryan Montbleau and Polly Paulusma. MANIFESTRA continues to blend the singer-songwriter's many-faceted influences, from swing to pop to rock. Aside from being a musician, McKeown is ... Continue reading
This started last year, as a way to get out of having to pick a list of the songs that rocked my world this past year. For the most part, each and every time I write a post on Quick Before It Melts, it ends with a link to a song by the artist being discussed that day. In a year’s worth of posts, that amounts to a heck of a lot of songs to distill into a neat, little list of my favourites. So there's no listing or ranking involved this week, just a little gift from me to [...]

Filed under: News , Holy Hell , New Music Kathleen Edwards | Getty After making a video last week for her song "Chameleon/Comedian" and winning the SOCAN ECHO Songwriting Prize, Kathleen Edwards is back at work with a new girl group side-project called Modern Beaver. Apparently. Exclaim reported today the singer-songwriter was likely working with a new band inspired by the wet, furry dambuilders. "I [...]

rheostatics.ca It was a pretty sweet get for Toronto's Legendary Horseshoe Tavern to enlist Joel Plaskett for five nights of shows from December 12 to 16 to mark its 65th birthday, but they weren't done. Canadian art-pop icons Rheostatics , who formally disbanded after eleven studio albums, four live albums, and a farewell show at Massey Hall in 2007, are getting back together for two nights at The 'Shoe on December 5 and 6. It's not quite the record-setting twelve shows in twelve nights "Fall Nationals" concert series they held at [...]

Yannick Grandmont Until recently, Montréal's Godspeed You! Black Emperor has been inexorably associated with a very certain moment in time, specifically the end of the last century and the dawn of this one. In addition to emerging at a time when post-rock was still an amorphous musical concept which was better felt than explained and Canada was only beginning to take steps towards becoming an international presence as home to exciting new music, Godspeed's trilogy of albums - F# A# , Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven [...]

Ingram Barss There's been a series of articles The Grid for the past year called Then & Now that has been diligently recording the history of Toronto's musical history by way of its clubs and venues, many of which have been consigned to history regardless of what legendary acts have sweat upon their stages. It's truly fascinating reading - especially if you take the time to look up what sort of pedestrian businesses reside at those addresses today - but it's comforting to know that the [...]

by Tiana Feng Jenn Grant recently released her 4th LP The Beautiful Wild . You can stream the entire thing over at Exclaim! . Compared to her last works, there's more of a play with instrumentation on this album, with her charming vocals always being at the forefront. Here is one of my favourites the driving track In The Belly Of A Dragon .

Halifax's Jenn Grant has carved out a solid career with her charming vocals and heartfelt lyrics. This week she released her fourth full length album The Beautiful Wild . There's a military precision to many of these songs. The album opener, "The Fighter", features a fiddle and snare drum (which appears a few times) that make you feel you are marching towards the battlefield. Forceful rhythms on "Gone Baby Gone" give it the air of a song that would be on the soundtrack of a post-apocalyptic wasteland movie. Continue reading [...]

If you found yourself drunk on the intoxicating pop of Honeymoon Punch , then Jenn Grant 's new album, The Beautiful Wild , will be a somewhat sobering experience. That's not to say that it's an inferior album, just enough of a departure to mark a change in style, tone, sound and sensibility for Grant. The opening "Introduction" features Grant clearing her throat and silencing her audience, drawing attention to the more mature, more world weary tone of "The Fighter". Marching band percussion on "I Want You Back" is more funeral [...]
