One of the hidden treasures I have always enjoyed about North By Northeast are the films. You might not know this, but NXNE is not just about music, but it's also about film (and somewhat about social media). It's a highly underrated portion of this program but one you might want to investigate. This year's film lineup was released last Wednesday and it is impressive to say the least. Let's have a gander shall we? Amos The Transparent: "Sure As The Weather" – Making A Music Video Ages and Stages: The [...]

Welcome back to this weeks edition of the Indie Sabbath , your Earmilk source for the freshest indie music from folk to rock and every fusion in between. This week we have another always enjoyable selection of the finest indie music being released all over the world. But fret not my friends because autumn happens to be one of my favourite seasons for many reasons, amongst [...]

Jennifer Castle seems to have been on the come up as of late, as her name seems to be coming up quite frequently on interwebby type things. And that includes the Ack's review of her last release . Well if you're heading to HPX '11, you can catch her perform her brand of "hazy collages", as the Ack put it, for yourself when she plays The Company House on Saturday, Oct 22nd. Toronto - Thursday night at the Summerworks was home to two artist who had impressed many at NXNE - Toronto's own Jennifer Castle and Toronto's own Bruce Peninsula . For me it was night two of Can con music and I was very much looking forward to exploring the sounds and songs of artists from all over the GTA west area. One of the oddest things I found about this year's Lower Ossington Theatre setup was the lack of chairs. They seem to have been removed after the theatre people were finished [...]

Frank Yang Bruce Peninsula's Fire Sale comeback campaign, announced back in April , served many purposes. Besides helping to build anticipation for the band's long-awaited second album Open Flames , out October 4, it re-established in no uncertain terms why they were one of Toronto's most unique and promising bands before they were sidelined by medical drama in the late part of last year, but also served to introduce a considerably different lineup from the one that recorded their debut A Mountain Is A Mouth [...]

Summerworks What: Summerworks Why: Celebrated long-running theatre festival that added a musical component four years ago. Who: In its short run, Summerworks already counts some of the cream of the current Canadian musical crop as its alumnus - this year's class seems certain to add to that list. For specifics, keep reading. When: There will be six nights of live music double-headers running over the course of the festival's week-and-a-bit duration, with the night-by-night breaking down as follows - there's [...]

Jessica Eaton Though they should be - and probably are - at work on their next album, a follow-up to last year's The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night , Montreal's Besnard Lakes have put together a little something something that will not only slake their fans' appetite for some new outer space-scale rock, but give them an excuse to get out of the studio and back on the road for a spell. On September 20, they'll release You Lived In the City , a new 123 EP that [...]
![The Great Hall on June 18, 2011 [NXNE 2011]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3546409_lg.jpg)
I spent my whole night at the Great Hall at NXNE . It was one of the most talked about shows since it was the Weird Canada /Flemish Eye showcase. There were two three acts that I was excited to see. One I wasn't familiar and the other I saw the night before. All I can say that this showcase had it's ups and downs. The first act was Halifax's Duzheknew . I haven't seen this band [...]
For a little over a decade, the city of Toronto has thrown their hat into the music festival ring, presenting North by Northeast, an answer to the over-saturated festival landscape of their fatter friends to the South.

Toronto - Jennifer Castle , Braids and Chad VanGaalen were the headliners of a decidedly Canadian night at the Great Hall, a venue that needs to be home to more shows. After an afternoon of unnecessary drinking at Trinity Bellwoods park, I was totally ready to park my butt in the comfy seats of the Great Hall and catch three of the hotter Canadian acts at the moment (all of which are signed to Flemish Eye). Jennifer Castle Girl and guitar, strong soulful songs penned with the utmost intimacy and delivered [...]

Frank Yang Hands down, the best thing to happen to NXNE in recent years is the designation of Yonge-Dundas Square as the festival's main stage and making the shows staged there - usually featuring the lineup's biggest names - free for everyone. And what's better is that despite being located in pretty much the most central and public place in the city, there's been no signs that they festival has been concerned about diluting the quality of the performances to be a little more family-friendly; witness last year's near-carnage of Iggy & [...]
Toronto - As you continue to prepare for NXNE next week, here is the second part in our series for places to eat and then shows to see. June 16, 2011 + Poutini + Wrongbar There maybe better food options when around the Wrongbar, but frankly, I don't hang around that area much after dark, especially when you have maniacs running around beating up senior citizens every once in a while. I myself am 30, so I'm almost halfway there, which means I might get half a beating. Anyways, the Wrongbar is home to [...]
Here is part 2 of who I shall see at NXNE 2011. This being Thursday June 16, 2011. Things are starting to pick up that night. Again I am too overwhelmed on who to see! 7PM Snowblink at The Music Gallery Hopefully I will try to catch their set but I have to go to a interview at around 7:30pm. 8PM Ruth Minnikin at Dakota Tavern [...]
