Photos and words by Debi Del Grande One pick and one guitar is all Jennifer O'Connor really needs with that voice of hers. As she sat alone in a chair at The Bootleg Theatre bar singing songs from her new album I Want What You Want , O'Connor's heart was on her sleeve with singles "Swan Song (for Bella)" and "Hidden Hill." O'Connor wasn't alone for too long as partner-in-crime Chris Brokaw (Codeine/Come) strapped on his guitar and sat in a chair next to her. Brokaw opened the show playing some tunes from Stories [...]

It's hard to believe it's been two decades since Laura Branigan had a monster hit with "Gloria." Now MAGNET fave Jennifer O'Connor has recorded a version of it and decided to give it away for free. Download it below. "Gloria" (download):

The 2012 edition of the CMJ Music Marathon may still be a couple of weeks off but we've already been excitedly penciling in our (exhausting!) show schedules and RSVP'ing to every party invitation that comes through the ol' digital transom. We've also assembled Spotify and Rdio playlists for some of ...

I have been on a bit of a Jennifer O'Connor kick lately ever since she went and put a 'sale' on her newest album I Want What You Want a few weeks back. There are more than a couple of stunning tracks on the album which started the my ravenous listening. I then landed on "Lullaby". I stopped and found a new favourite Jennifer O'Connor song. The song is actually a B-side from her 2008 album Here With Me which was my introduction to her music in the first place. Now, I am not [...]

Jennifer O'Connor + Tim Foljahn + The Working Poor Thunderbird Café / 9:00 / $8-$10 Words by Brendan Mention the phrase "singer/songwriter", and you'll likely evoke images of a down-on-one's-luck traveler, slingin' a gee-tar as they hop from bar to bar, singing heartfelt tunes. Jennifer O'Connor doesn't really fit this image. She's more of a traveler of the heart than the roads. Not to say she hasn't traveled all over the country to sing her songs, but it's the engaging emotions in those [...]

Brooklyn's Jennifer O'Connor is at the Hi-Tone this Sunday, March 18th for the early show. O'Connor released her first post-Matador full length, I Want What You Want , this past November on her own Kiam Records and is on the road to let everyone know. She started the tour in promotion of the record at the beginning of this month, is at SXSW the next few days, will head here after the festival then make her way back to the northeast. [...]
The ability of one person to completely disarm you with a sentiment and melody is still special in 2012. As her fifth album makes clear, Jennifer O'Connor has it. The singer-songwriter as an entity is not hip these days. It's not cool to be out there alone, under your own name. Surround yourself with six to eight other people (perhaps including, say, a guy in a funny hat and someone playing weird instruments no one recognizes), and give yourself an abstract band name, or one with animal references, and it's another story, even if at the end of the [...]

Don't let anyone tell you we don't give love to female stand-alone artists. I've been following Jennifer O'Connor for some time, and I always appreciate her simplistic approach to crafting listenable gems. She's got a brand new album available titled I Want What You Want , which will hit stores on November 8th via her own Kiam Records . Her first single from the record is exactly what you'd expect her to do, writing a song tipped with a personal story. You'll find that [...]

After 25 Grammy Awards and just about as many albums, Stevie Wonder needs little introduction. Signed to Motown Records at the tender age of 11 after being discovered by Ronnie White of the Miracles, the blind-from-infancy multi-instrumentalist's first two albums didn't make much of a splash - his sophomore outing, a tribute to the songs of Ray Charles, is notorious for the poor match it makes between "Uncle Ray's" world-weary lyricism and "Little" Stevie Wonder's sunny, high-pitched innocence - but his subsequent work as a composer, singer-songwriter, and arranger is legendary.
