After releasing three solo albums including one with Low Millions and writing songs for artists like Bet Middler, Adam Cohen has created a wonderfully candid compendium of songs that comprise his latest album, Like a Man . The Canadian songwriter, son of poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen, appears to have rekindled his roots and produced a record that channels a bit of his father's writing style. Like a Man is an amalgamation of hippie-era folk and modern folk-rock, boasting beautiful harmony and poetic lyrics. Lines like... "You open like a flower in the heat, [...]

There aren't many sitcoms about families on American TV anymore. It's not like it was in the 1980s. Leaving aside the bizarre living arrangements of the dreadful Full House (for which Bob Saget has made ample reparations lately), the nuclear family or variations thereof ruled the ratings. There were Family Ties (hippie parents vs Reaganite kids), Growing Pains (vaguely creepy dad vs a bunch of kids nobody can really remember), and Who's The Boss (Tony Danza vs humour), and a TV series starring Jason Bateman whose character's mother had died. Whatever it [...]

An admission - I've never heard Famous Blue Raincoat , Jennifer Warnes' highly regarded album of Leonard Cohen covers. Because I only know her from belting out Up Where We Belong and The Time of My Life I'm afraid she's always had a strong whiff of cheese to me. That set of Cohen covers evidently increased Jennifer's muso cred and as the All Music Guide notes , "suddenly a singer who had seemed like a second-rate Linda Ronstadt now appeared to be a first-class interpretive artist." [...]

Despite teasing us all by calling their last album 'The E.N.D.', Black Eyed Peas are regrettably very much an ongoing concern; their next long-player is 'cleverly' titled ' The Beginning ', while brand new single ' The Time (The Dirty Bit) ' might just be their most ear-rapingly awful moment yet. Mind you - we said much the same about ' Boom Boom Pow ', which we eventually ended up liking after its refusal to go away beat us into utter submission. Anywho - 'The Time (The Dirty Bit)' is based around a *huge* interpolation of [...]

Hands down, the most-rerecorded song from the vast catalog of Canadian poet, novelist, and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen is Hallelujah ; the newly-reposted MOKB Covers Project: Hallelujah counts over forty versions, and the list is by no means complete. I have no complaints about this -- it's a great song, which, like so many of Cohen's best work, moves fluidly between grand mythos and intimate confession to give voice to strong yet otherwise unexpressable feeling. Problematically, however, the vast majority of covers of this song are not truly Leonard Cohen covers, but [...]
