South by Southwest 2012 offered an orgiastic selection of music, too bounteous for any one person to digest. Buzz Bands LA contributing photographer Scott Dudelson made the rounds all week and hit some of the festival's buzziest artists — from everyone's darlings, Alabama Shakes (top photo) to swoon-worthy songstresses (Fiona Apple and Norah Jones) to L.A. favorites (Soft Swells and Jenny O) to indie favorites (Built to Spill and White Denim) to re-emergent veterans (the DB's and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top). Here's a sampling of what he saw. Concert photography by Scott Dudelson

SXSW is pretty intimidating to those that want to trek across the musical Disney Land that is this crazy festival. To an audience member it's like a Cheese Cake Factory menu and your decision could end up being a serious mistake. Plus add long lines to shows you probably won't get into (The Roots, Fiona Apple, Grimes, Miike Snow, The Shins, etc) and the walking (OH THE WALKING!) from venue to venue can be daunting. Well we here at Kata Rokkar are going to make it easier for you to check out bands you might like. If you don't like [...]

For those of you looking for another lonely chapter to the weariness and depressing sentiment of J. Tillman (Fleet Foxes ex-drummer), look elsewhere. Josh's new project, entitled Father John Misty is brighter, more upbeat, and straight up hilarious. With lyrics like, "...Me tracing the expanse of your American back / With Adderall and weed in my veins / You came...I think ," you have wonder what happened from now and 20112s I Will Return . But who cares? This new Tillman comes armed with hilarious stage banter and a certain charm that is much more inviting [...]

So as rich as 2011 proved to be for local music, 2012 promises even more. Following is Buzz Bands LA's list of "Bands to Watch" for 2012 — 33 newbies who have not yet released a full-length album and are on our radar to do so in the coming year. Whom did I miss? Leave a comment. Pictured above: Hands. After the jump, the list, alphabetically: Black Flamingo — Full-length in the works, and if anything on it sounds like "Golden [...]
Groupies, this laugh is on you. Margaret Cho's video for "Baby I'm With the Band" (from her comedy music album "Cho Dependent") was made at this year's Bonnaroo, where she romped with rock luminaries too numerous to mention. (Check out the look on Brendan Benson's face at 1:15.) It's posted here not just because we need a Friday morning chuckle, but because Cho, along with singer-songwriter Grant-Lee Phillips, is co-emceeing a big benefit show on Sunday at Largo. "A Concert to Benefit School Music Revival," hosted by the Section Quartet , will raise funds for [...]

Bright Eyes have teamed up with Swedish duo First Aid Kit to record a cover of the White Stripes ' " We're Going To Be Frieds ". The recording was part of a collaborative forthcoming charity album curated by Gift Horse Project and Manimal Vinyl Records with a goal to record school friendly covers of a slew of popular songs. All proceeds from the digital-only compilation album, entitled ' Cool for School: For the Benefit of the Lunchbox Fund ', will go towards the Lunchbox Fund [...]

What makes Jenny O. , yet another female singer/songwriter from New York/Los Angeles who plays acoustic guitar, stand out from all the others who also have great voices, personal lyrics, and know how to compose a well-structured song? I'm not sure. But there's definitely something. Maybe it's the background "woos" in "Won't Let You Leave." They add a sense of reality here—they ground the tune, and keep it from being twee. I hate twee. Jenny O. is most definitely not twee. It makes the studio-produced song feel live, as if she's creating it right here right now. [...]

[They Left L.A. for the Other Coast, but We Still Listen, Part I:] Steve Cooper made music in L.A. as the Gray Kid before segueing into his electro-funk project Spirit Animal . Now based in New York City, Spirit Animal's new single "I'm Around" (premiered Thursday on Spinner ) finds him collaborating with a couple of his old SoCal pals on a croony electro-pop number. The tune features a string arrangement by Jenny O, and the soaring vocals of White Sea/M83 [...]
Here are Monday's mighty touts: ► Bardot brings two unique female artists to L.A. as part of their It's A School Night series. Although Rickie Lee Jones is a legend in her own right for writing songs that cover every bit of the music spectrum, U.K.'s young Mercury Prize-nominated and pop-dubstep queen Katy B may be the one perking ears up. Unlike Jamie Woon, the BRIT School graduate is staying on top of the mainstream charts while she brightens the pop scene with those Rinse FM fan-friendly beats. [That's [...]
Tonight in our little town: ► Three of Manimal Vinyl's most promising artists — Sister Crayon , Jenny O and Papercranes — will be joined by Blackbird Blackbird and more at the Exchange (618 S. Spring). Details . That's Sister Crayon's video for "(in) Reverse," above. ► John Hiatt headlines the Troubadour behind his new album "Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns." ► Jesse Malin & the St. Marks Social will perform their album "The Fine Art of Self Destruction" at the Key Club (don't be surprised if Malin [...]
Jenny O. – Home [EP]. Download "Well OK Honey" (mp3). Jenny O. has sung background vocals on Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Chris Garneau tracks. On her debut release, the EP Home, she presents a folk-pop sound that is piloted by her levitated vocals and rich harmonies. There is a light effervescence to these songs with their '60s and '70s Southern California pop styling. The songs vary from full band to stripped down acoustic guitar or piano accompanied tracks, but the prevailing attributes of the album are those plush harmonies and Jenny O.'s effective vocals. [...]

Watch/Listen to the band, 1,2,3's "Work" from their debut full-length "New Heaven". The band was recently released their first album nd have been making a lot of people take notice of their diverse sounding indie rock that just immediately grabs you.
An album of Buddy Holly covers is pretty daunting. He arguably invented rock 'n' roll before the age of 22. His backing band, the Crickets, supposedly inspired the Beatles' name. And Rivers Cuomo looks just like him. Fortunately, the artists covering Holly's biggest hits on Rave On Buddy Holly are allowed to interpret the songs however they want. Certain artists bring more of their personalities to the table—Paul McCartney's spit-flying screaming on "It's So Easy" and Patti Smith's Spanish sweet nothings on "Words of Love", for example—while others, like too-cute-for-school She and Him, stick to sunny '50s pop [...]
