After witnessing Jeremy Fisher's spirited set at last week's Mountain Stage concert, I finally got my hands on a copy of Goodbye Blue Monday. As if I wasn't already charmed by Jeremy's live... **Click on the link to read the full post, download mp3s, and comment.**

It's that time of year again- Superbowl Sunday and all. I'm not even entirely sure who's playing. I could really care less. I'm only interested in the commercials ... and the beer. I'm more concerned with Premiership Football this week, with the top three teams all away, and only 5 points between Chelsea and the top of the table. Anyway, whatever your weekend plans are, have a good one, and enjoy this week's mixtape. Tracklisting: American Music Club - San Francisco [...]
I've always held a special place in my heart for boys that make noise. There's something alluring and endearing about a man who can share himself in song. Here are tracks from the seventeen (plus one) troubadours that got me twitterpated in 2007… Fionn Regan - "Be Good or Be Gone" Landon Pigg - "Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop" Joshua James - "You're the Cocaine" Eric Hutchinson - "Ok,

I nearly did The Top 2007 Songs From 2007 (like this insane post from last year ). I decided to focus on 27 instead (2007 minus the zeroes). These are the songs I think are the most well-written , well-performed , well-done and well-worth a listen. 27. The National ~ Ada There is a great chance, if The Duchess and I ever have a baby girl, she will be named Ada. 26. Great Lake Swimmers ~ I Became Awake I always [...]

This was my first take on Jeremy Fisher : "This cat is the new Paul Simon ! Jeremy Fisher writes catchy and witty songs everyone should listen to. I expect this soon-to-be-superstar Canadian to set the Blogsphere ablaze." (from this post ). Sadly, he didn't set the music-blog-o-web on fire . And I don't know why. His songs are more infectious than the common cold. His vocals are cleaning and purer than driven snow. His lyrics are more poetic than Thom Yorke or [...]

[ that's the two-year-old me on the right, celebrating something in fine style - I think it was a cousin's birthday ] Two years ago today I started Fuel/Friends, mostly on a lark, to talk about my passion for music and all the other good things in this world. My how we've grown, and what fun we've had these last two years. I sincerely appreciate each of you guys who stop by each day to see what I have to say, and the attention that you pay to both my writing and my musical selections. It's pretty much [...]

Much like the previous mix ( Album Enders From The Ladies Of '07 ), this is a mix of songs that are the last cut on albums released in 2007 by men or bands of men. Of course, you could probably ascertain that from the title. Just call me The Duke of Redundancy. These are mellow songs, perfect for ending your day with. Get it? Album enders for ending your day (falling asleep). 1. Explosions In The Sky ~ So Long, Lonesome 2. Magnet ~ Lucid [...]

Part 5 of our 7 part series... Monday – Thursday Nights The Daily Show/Colbert Report (Comedy Central) – America at its finest. Searing comedic insight into the hypocrisies and deficiencies of the media and government. Fans of "The Daily Show/Colbert Report" are people who care about the future of our country, and have a good sense of humor. They also tend to be young and Democratic. Don McLean - American [...]
after something of an emotional exfoliation this evening, anyone's guess has decided to be temporarily unavailable mentally. thinking shall resume tomorrow night perhaps. jeremy fisher - scar that never heals

"We are living in the future, I'll tell you how I know, I read it in the paper fifteen years ago. We're all driving rocket ships and talking with our minds, and wearing turquoise jewelry and standing in soup lines." -John Prine Please, send us there Of all the stellar bodies, the crew at the Canals have always felt the most taunted by the Moon. It sits up there, peering down all [...]

I had a movie weekend -- being inside to escape the heat of the day and the monsoon thunderstorms of the evenings. First up, despite the film being about music, I found Dreamgirls to be schmaltzy, poorly constructed, and pretty much unbearable. My friends who recommended it to me owe me a ticket to a show containing at least 97% fewer full-length, improbably placed songs in the middle of normal scenes. I also saw Bourne Ultimatum as a date with my Dad for his 60th birthday this weekend [...]

I think the autoharp is one of the most underused instruments in music today. Luckily, some folks agree with me. Here are a few memorable tunes arranged in no particular order… Smashing Pumpkins ~ We Only Come Out At Night Great Lake Swimmers ~ I Am Part Of A Large Family drowsy ~ Me and the Pedestal June Carter Cash ~ Ring of Fire Grizzly Bear ~ Lullabye [...]

If you haven't heard, yesterday was quite a day for The Canals. Google announced that it will be acquiring Feedburner for $100 million. And Feedburner provides our feed . That's right - this blog was part of a multi-million dollar deal with Google. We promise not to let our newfound success get to our heads. We're gonna share the wealth the way we always have - by providing you, the heroes, with music that "shanks the inner ear and pumps the pulse of the nation." (For the record, I favored the slogan [...]

A dedicated Late Greats reader wondered if I had a wake up mix to go with my day ending mix. As luck with have it, I do. I like to put parameters on my mixes; otherwise it's just too difficult compiling a CD's worth of music. Like the mix of album ending tracks, these are all songs that start albums, track number one (see the parallel?). This mix starts are slow and builds (rather quickly) in order to get you up, dressed, out the door, and headed to Starbucks so you can make it to work on time. [...]

There are two things I avoid taking seriously: songwriters who go by their full name and Canadians. Jeremy Fisher , a singer/songwriter from Vancouver, is making me rethink that bias. Fisher plays instantly catchy, upbeat rock songs that throw back to the styles of 90's alternative bands like the Violent Femmes and Rusted Root. These are memorable tunes that go down easy. Add this Band on Myspace [...]

Today we have two different homonyms that make a kind of funny pairing (hence the title of the post). Hypnotized Ani DiFranco Medeski, Martin & Wood by Jolene Mindy Smith (featuring the songwriter: Dolly Parton) Ray LaMontagne (my fav Jolene song) Jeremy Fisher Which song do you dig best? Or [...]
