Jerry Reed’s country and Nashville Sound beginnings Singer, songwriter and certified guitar player Jerry Reed found his musical calling as a child, and by the time he turned 18 in 1955, he was already making records. Sides cut for Capitol (catch the rockabilly “When I Found You” here ), NRC and Columbia failed to ignite a performing career, but his songwriting and session guitar work garnered traction in Nashville. By 1965 he’d come to the attention of Chet Atkins, and two years later he released his debut LP, The Unbelievable Guitar & [...]
Maria McKee: Wayfarin' Stranger [ purchase ] Jerry Reed: Wayfaring Stranger [ purchase ] "Wayfaring Stranger" is a standard in the folk music catalog, dating back to the 19th century. A religious ballad, it gained new meaning during the 1930s, with lyrics seemingly reflecting the plight of the displaced and homeless -- poor wayfaring strangers, "traveling through this world of woe." In the 1940s, it became a signature tune for Burl Ives, who named both his autobiography [...]
Georgia On My Mind is most commonly associated with Ray Charles. It appears on every tribute album to Ray, and Willie Nelson (who recorded the song in 1978) sang it at his funeral. But Georgia was a standard long before Ray Charles made it his own. It was written by Hoagy Carmichael and lyricist Stuart Gorrell in 1930. The story goers that the Georgia of the title was originally intended to refer to Hoagy’s sister, but realising that Gorell’s words could apply also to the southern US state, the writers were happy to keep things ambiguous. The plan [...]
I gave AIV the train song idea and ended up not being to get my shit together and my head above water at work to do the post and I was a little disappointed by that. So I decided that this week I'd drop another classic country and western song genre on you guys and write the post before I told AIV the idea so I would get to post this time. This week is Truckin' Songs. My daddy was a trucker when I was born and somewhere there is a picture of me knee high to him standing beside [...]
Song, By Toad is going to be on cruise control for a few days while Matthew continues his oriental expedition and the rest of us embark on our own expedition to Dorset for End Of The Road . What that means to you, dear reader, is that it may be a little slow to get a response from the Song, By Toad offices if you decide to get in touch; and if you're a new commentator you might not see your comment straight away, because someone has to manually approve comments from new people to check you're [...]
It ain't every day that a guy's favorite team wins the championship in glorious, tradition-rich college football. And if that guy's favorite team is the Alabama Crimson Tide ... his alma mater, no less ... then perhaps a musical celebration is in order. So, in honor of my beloved Tide and their 14-0 run to Waterford crystal , I've put together a 40-minute playlist of songs dedicated to Alabama. You get some twang, some folk, a little jazz, and of course we rock the house. A couple choices are Crimson Tide specific, others [...]
I was in two minds (only two?) over what to title this post : Ruby... was certainly a guilty pleasure during my childhood, not cool at all to enjoy country music. But it's an excellent, if understated, story song too - not the classic verse-after-verse sort, but one where your mind fills in all the details & history. You create your own image of a crippled ex-soldier, and of Ruby - contemplating a night out... all made-up, hair tinted & curled; even of the house where our story-snippet [...]

Third in a series - find more stories on How Marvellous... I'll confess to struggling to think of more songs that arguably relied upon a good story to make the charts, at least without the terrors of actually researching the subject (rather than the details); however, a tune came into my head whilst walking, which memory said was more reminiscing than story-telling... but on reflection, I think it fits the bill perfectly, being by far the biggest selling Kinks single for many years, on both sides of the Atlantic. ♫ Come Dancing [...]

Tale Of A Treacherous Pine Tree
We have a huge pine tree in our front yard, and it's situated dangerously close to the garage. The danger exists because the tree has grown so large and mature through the years that it's now susceptible to losing limbs every time we have heavy snow, or ice, or even strong winds. We've had it trimmed several times but it still seems to regularly find unwanted parts of itself to jettison, and I worry that it's only a matter of time before a big branch crashes through the roof of the garage. I don't know a lot about [...]

10 Great Georgia Artists
The late, great Ray Charles sang about her with love and tenderness. Little Feat memorialized the capital, and Blind Willie McTell sang about waking up with the Statesboro blues. Georgia has a long lineage of native sons and daughters who've gone on to musical greatness. Here are 10 acts from the Peach State, whose music is sure to keep Georgia on your mind. 1. Allman Brothers Band I know, “technically” the Allman Brothers are from Jacksonville, Florida, but they moved to Macon in 1969 and [...]

Rodney Crowell “Heartbroke”
What's most striking to me about Rodney Crowell is how much of a mover and shaker he was in the country music scene during the mid-to-late 1970s right on through the 1980s.
