Over the weekend we learned of at least one high profile 2012 recording project that involves Houston at least peripherally: local arts patron and charity fundraiser Carolyn Farb will be the ex... Continue reading "Carolyn Farb, Jesse Dayton Go Undercover with Kinky Friedman" >
Aftermath is so busy in the city, we don't get down to Wrecks Bell's Old Quarter Acoustic Café in Galveston enough. But we caught a free ride down Saturday and rectified that situation. And what... Continue reading "Jesse Dayton & Friends Silence Old Quarter Cafe" >
Jesse Dayton is learning the joys of Facebook. The ex-Houston honky-tonker and Rob Zombie rockabilly muse, who plays the Armadillo Palace February 26 and Conroe's Texas Independence Day Festival M... Continue reading "Jesse Dayton's "Fans": Singer Is "Faggy," "Douchebag"" >

Heartfelt Texas dance hall honky-tonk The Texas-born Jesse Dayton was weaned on classic country, taking particular interest in the honky-tonk sounds of George Jones and Lefty Frizzell, and the firebrand individualism of Waylon, Willie and the boys. He developed a presence in the alt.country world as his 2001 release Hey Nashvegas seemed to both critique and court Music City. The album's mainstream touches couldn't hide lyrics more deeply personal than the typical Nashville songwriting appointment could produce, and his underlying fealty to rockabilly, honky-tonk, Cajun and latin sounds [...]

Michael Des Barres is a British rocker and actor - he's been in a number of bands but is perhaps most famous for replacing Robert Palmer in Power Station in 1985. As an actor, he's been in shows like "Miami Vice" and "MacGyver." Des Barres is making a new album in Austin, and it's being produced by Texas boy Jesse Dayton. No Past, No Future, No Problem is described as a "soul" album and nobody seems to know when it's coming out, but here's one of the songs from the album as performed by Des Barres sitting on [...]

Crawling and shambling out of South Austin with a renegade rebel yell the likes of which would wake the undead, Captain Clegg and the Night Creatures , featuring Austin's own Jesse Dayton , have taken the world of horror-rock by storm as of late with their brand of zombified blues-rock and hellbilly honky-tonk. Originally conceived as a fictional group made to perform during the Phantom Jam scene of Rob Zombie's Halloween 2, Capt. Clegg has taken on a life of it's own with it's excellent self-titled debut, featuring hip-shaking, down-home tracks like "Transylvania Terror Train" and "Macon County [...]

Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon, Austin Hey folks! Today's excellent post comes from longtime commenter, first-time guest-poster Dave D. (Not to be confused with my poker buddy Dave, who has posted here before ). Dave D. is a self-described honky-tonk addict who occasionally takes work in Nashville or Austin strictly to feed his honky-tonk addiction. So sit back and enjoy his take on the female side of the current honky-tonk scene in Texas: * * * * * Although country music radio these days [...]
Just spoke with Lisa Endicott, who runs press for The Granada Theater, and she verified that the Billy Joe Shaver/Jesse Dayton concert that was to take place this Friday is canceled. Endicott told me ... Continue reading "Billy Joe Shaver Show Cancelled And I Can't Tell You Why. (Oh, Wait--We Can?)" >
I haven't forgotten... Alabama - Neil Young Kicking off the list is a demanding job, but Alabama does us proud with lots of songs to choose between (go here for another two...or at least two different versions of the same song). Neil Young takes us in his very capable hands to start proceedings. Lynard Skynard and Sweet Home Alabama were never really seriously entertained. North to Alaska - Johnny Horton Alaska was another state that I tackled over at Star Maker Machine - so head... Please visit Ceci [...]

Jesse Dayton is one of Austin's hep honky-tonk cats. I wrote about his song "Hey Nashvegas" a couple of years back and at least according to that failed Nashville "reality show" things have only gotten worse down there. Jesse's back with a new record called Holdin' Our Own ; it's being billed as a collection of duets with Brennen Leigh. Sounds like classic Bakersfield country to me. Pre-order Holdin' Our Own here . Let's Run Away Bonus: [...]
Stuff : My pal Chuck Prophet has annointed me with the news that he'll be performing some tunes in Park City on Friday as part of a Sundance ASCAP Showcase ... and for those of ya unable to swing by Sundance this year, I have a semi-exclusive Chuck Prophet demo track that's never been released commercially down below for those who wanna be in the know... Chuck's also got some music in the soundtrack to a grimly funny, provocative teen angst flick about vagina dentata called Teeth [...]

So, my husband mentioned in his post earlier today that we've been out of town for the past week on vacation. I was also tied up with work for a couple of weeks before, so I feel like I've really been out of the loop! We missed out on a couple of shows that I would have definitely enjoyed. One show, at the Mercy Lounge, featured Wanda Jackson and Amy LaVere. I missed out on the show (and missed out pretty good, I think, as Wanda only has a very few dates scheduled throughout the year, and none of the [...]
