Due out August 25th, Jesse Matheson's, debut album "Pleasure Pounds" is sure to entertain. Jesse is known for lyrics full of fun and innuendo. An interview with CBC Radio 3 highlights that part of his inspiration for the title and substance of the album is women's body. He equates Pleasure Pounds to a woman's love handles, and food. Trust me, you have to explore this artist and listen to his music to fully understand where he is coming from. Nonetheless, those with appreciation for individuality and a sense of humor will love this release. Be sure to pay attention to [...]

Before I say anything else today, I want to apologize for over-hyping last Sunday's Elvis Perkins performance at Wicker Park Fest. If you were there, you know what I mean. Elvis and the boys all did their thing, no doubt, but the sound people at the festival really dropped the ball and let an otherwise excellent set go completely to waste. The vocals were nonexistent, the guitars weren't right at all, and the whole thing was generally a mess. I don't go to an outdoor street festival expecting great sound, but I do expect it to at least be listenable. [...]

Music A bad week for dead tree music journalism as Christopher Weingarten said it's dead (read Andy's excellent analysis here as a companion piece), ex-Blender writer Jonah Weiner said it's dead , and John Vanderslice not only said it's dead , but also said he's not authorizing any print advertising and is now relying on mp3 blogs to promote his albums. The band Barcelona noticed documentarian Jon Rawlinson used their song "Please Don't Go" in the viral hit Kuroshio Sea aquarium video. It wasn't authorized but [...]

You have to respect a man who names his album "Pleasure Pounds". Which is a euphemism about love handles. "They're those parts of a woman's body that are, well, womanly." says Jesse Matheson, whose debut is a 13 song sexual meal. Perfect for this hot summer days and even HOTTER summer nights. Hogtown get ready for the bossest hog of all! Tonight, for one night only, Jesse Matheson & His Midnight Snacks will grace the stage at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern . FOR FREE! Jesse, if you say it all fancy-like, sounds like French for "I know". Which is what you can say now if someone asks you where Jesse is playing tonight. My other brother, who lives in Toronto will be there too, which makes me the other brother right now. mp3: " Nothing at All " by Jesse [...]
Went down to watch the brother rock the house at Vancouver City Limits last night. Hosted at the Beaumont Studios at W. 5th & Alberta (incidentally, that's nowhere near the actual Vancouver city limits) every Monday night, VCL is an intimate mostly roots and singer-songwriter music showcase series worth checking out. It's in a rehearsal space with soft seats, and only holds about 50 people. Each show features three acts, and the folks who put it on take video of the concert and then post one nicely edited song from each [...]

Vancouver musical icon Jesse Matheson has just left on his first ever tour of Western Canada. It takes a lot of gumption for a prairie boy to approach the West by heading East, but that's the kind of backwards situation you find yourself in every single day when you live in Vancouver. And I should know. I first met Jesse Matheson on a blustery Tuesday in November. I remember it was the day Ronald Reagan was elected President. In a world like the one I could sense was approaching, it felt good to [...]

Ladies & Gentleman, this week's Tribute to the late Lee Hazlewood continues with a couple of entries to the Elegant Lady/Not-Elegant Dude tradition that are both based out of Vancouver. The first track, "We Don't Have To" is EXCLUSIVE to A Bulldozer With A Wrecking Ball Attached , since it comes from my brother, one Jesse Matheson . Jesse, you may recall, recently scored Track of the Day at CBC Radio 3 (and you can hear R3's Craig Norris's reasons right here ). Well, this track features the same lady-voice as that chart-topper [...]
