After struggling through soundcheck Jesse Sykes apologized to the early arrivals at IOTA , calling the soundcheck "demoralizing," and allowing her drummer a chance to check his mics and exit. Moments later, Jesse Sykes (Lead Vocals and Guitar), Phil Wandscher (Guitar), Bill Herzog (Bass), Eric Eagle (Drums) stepped on stage and into an entirely musical introduction, 100 percent psychedelic rock/folk, stoner, garage, heavy guitar, blissful. After they grew better acquainted with the stage Wandscher asked, " Can we dim those lights, I feel like I'm tripping acid?" The lights dimmed, and we hear "Come to Mary" from their fourth LP [...]

Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter announce more tour dates in support of their critically acclaimed new album Marble Son. Consequence of Sound says, "This is a complex, fascinating record that punches the shoulder for attention. Marble Son is as subtle as it is hypnotic, mixing delicacy with confidence and hope with fear." Spin says, [...]
"Man, if musicians started writing music blogs ... most of us music bloggers would be screwed." I've said this out loud more than a few times and thought it even more. And the arrival of Kyle Zantos' new podcast and blog Musician on Musicians only seems to confirm this. Zantos', a recent Seattle transplant who is [...]

Oh boy. Here we go again... I'm unsure if psychedelic music has a place in this day and age, as it just seems so "passé," and irrelevant to me. Then again, attendance at Phish concerts is still in the thousands, and MGMT (as mainstream as they are) are still incredibly popular. So where does Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter fit into this equation of psych-rock? Well, their new album, "Marble Son" is difficult to categorize. As an added bonus, it's not that enjoyable. A minute and a half into track numero uno, "Hushed by Devotion" [...]
Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter have just announced a batch of new tour dates, including a set of East Coast appearances with the Sadies, which sounds like a dream line-up. Their latest album, Marble Son, released in early August, which we labeled as PopMatters Pick with an 8 rating. Tour dates after the jump.
Can there be a sweet hereafter for Jesse Sykes after Marble Son? The dive-bar, alt-country sound of Seattle based unit, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, gets a facelift for their forth album, Marble Son, and strides shamelessly onto shelves. What distinguishes Sykes from other heroines at the helm, like Nico and Neko Case, which she carries the phantasms of in many songs, is the immutably clean guitars of Phil Wandscher. Without Wandscher's interesting riff collection throughout, keeping you from floating off into the lonely cloud of Sykes incorrigible rasp, the listener is shot down repeatedly with cryptic [...]

Tomorrow night I'll be at the Death Cab for Cutie + Frightened Rabbit show at RIMAC, most likely singing the words to all the songs under my breath while trying to objectively cover the show but my review is going to look something like the diary of a sixteen year old girl, with all sorts of, "holy shit, and theennn they played Transatlanticism and it reminded me of that one time where I liked that boy but nothing happened" followed by claims that it was the best show.. [...]

Sunday fun: ► Roots Roadhouse returns for a second year to the Echo and Echoplex, bringing a batch of great Americana and country artists to the upstairs and downstairs stages (along with some acoustic performances on the patio). This year, the event is highlighted by the Sadies (pictured), who will be joined by Jesse Sykes, Old Man Markley, David Serby, Mike Stinson and Nikki Lane, among others. It starts at 3 p.m. — here are your set times . ► Califone headlines the Satellite, with Death to Anders opening. [...]

Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter Marble Son Station Grey Records Considering how Marble Son has been billed as Jesse Sykes' electric rock album, it's surprising how little its opening track, "Hushed by Devotion" does to further this story line. Yes, Sykes' voice is as brilliant as ever - Husky, smoky, and a little rough around the edges; Nuanced, foreboding, and surprisingly calm. The problem is not Sykes, but her backing band, The Sweet Hereafter, who are thoroughly unconvincing as a heavy psych-rock outfit. The riffs wander with [...]

Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter - Wooden Roses
If you're going to do something, do it well. And leave something witchy. It's 1969. A sun is setting on a summer of love. War, children, it's just a shot away. A generation fightin' in the streets, a generation fightin' in a foreign land. Good Mornin' Vietnam! A knock on the door at 10050 Cielo Drive. Brian, Rocky, Jack 'n' Judy, burn out, RIP. The Fab Four storm the roof and wave goodnight as Elvis laments the boyz in the 'hood. Midnight Cowboy smears a sleazy, degenerate X...
