Not even X-mas yet and I´m thoroughly sick of the white stuff already. As Jesse Winchester sings: "I was tuning in the six o'clock newscast, and the weather man mentioned snow, as soon as I heard that four-letter word, I was making my plans to go..." Snow, be gone. Jesse Winchester: Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding [ purchase ] The CD this song is on was released in 2009... so it's technically too new, according to our blog guidelines of 2000 and older - however, the story is the oldest in the world (boy meets girl, falls in love and vows to stay together forever)... as is the sweet-and-wise tone of the voice of the man singing... I'd heard lots about Jesse Winchester over the years but hadn't paid too much attention - when LD at The Adios Lounge (also [...]
As I sit at my desk looking at the inner sleeve of this record, I can't help but think that Emmylou Harris is one of the most beautiful women to ever attach her voice to a song. There she sits, in front of the standard issue photographer's backdrop, wearing jeans and a Danskin and looking as breathtaking as any woman ever photographed. Fast forward to 2009, as she turns 62 years old this coming April 2nd, and you'll see not much has changed over the past 30 years: she remains as stunningly [...]
You ever watch football games on TV with the sound off? I've done that for decades, a habit picked up when I was a sportswriter long ago - the announcers really add very little to the game. And this is a great opportunity for multi-tasking: instead of listening to Al Michaels drone on, I listen to new albums. So here you go, some new ones for 2010 and a handful left over from late last year. And they're all pretty good: Vampire Weekend is just about the whitest band around, but [...]
My first recollection of Jesse Winchester was seeing his picture on the back of a Billboard magazine in the 1970s. I had not thought about him since until seeing him last month on Spectacle: Elvis Costello with ... on Sundance Channel. My loss. He brought the house down (and tears to eyes of Neko Case) with "Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding," a track from his latest release, Love Filling Station . Winchester was born in Louisiana in 1944 and 22 years later, upon his graduation from college, he received his draft notice. He decided the Vietnam War [...]

Case chose Woody Allen 's ' Radio Days ,' Orson Welles ' ' The [...]
Jesse Winchester: Thanks To You [ purchase ] Emmylou Harris: Thanks To You [ purchase ] Chris Smither: Thanks To You [ purchase ] I encountered this song as a 1997 cover in the hands of ragged folk-blues guitarist Chris Smither, who plays the song out as a rapid-fire wail of almost proud self-pity and heaven-sent salvation, a ray [...]

By 1974, radio's hard rock trend was going strong – Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Humble Pie dominated the FM rock airwaves. Appropriately titled for the time, Hard Goods arrived in mailboxes with freshly minted rockers like Montrose, covering Roy Brown's "Good Rocking Tonight" and Foghat, offering its cover of Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day." Ted Nugent and his Amboy Dukes show up, and the perfect marriage between glam and hard rock emerges in the then-new KISS (Casablanca Records were distributed by Warner Bros. until about 1976). The Doobie Brothers were still rockin' behind guitarist/vocalist [...]

I recently contributed a post to the Star Maker Machine blog on American-turned-Canadian artist Jesse Winchester. This week´s theme there ( Winter Wonderland ) gave me the welcome opportunity to showcase his exquisite ditty Snow , a song from Winchester´s eponymous debut from 1970. An impressive album, produced by Robbie Robertson and engineered by Todd Rundgren. I also put up a short and sweet acoustic demo of that track, found on a boot called Early Demos . And as there are plenty more treasures to be found on that disc, here we go. [...]
Jesse Winchester : Snow [ purchase ] My esteemed colleague Darius recently tackled a Jesse Winchester song ( Just Like New ) in these pages, asking to be guided through more of his work. So I - amongst others - told him to buy the self-titled debut from ´70 first. Here´s my chance to illustrate, as that great Robbie Robertson-produced and Todd Rundgren-engineered album has got [...]
One of the things I love about being involved in SMM is discovering new music. Usually, this happens because my fellow Starmakers are a great resource for wonderful music I've never heard, (thank you all!), and I try to return the favor with my own posts. But sometimes one of my own posts indirectly leads me to something new. This is the greatest reward of all. This post will illustrate what I mean. Vid: Jesse Winchester – Can't Stand Up…
Prior to attending a taping of Elvis Costello's Spectacle, I had never heard of singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester . Winchester's unique story involved him moving to Canada to avoid serving in the Vietnam War, having his self-titled debut album produced by Robbie Robertson and not being allowed to tour the US until being granted amnesty in the late '70s. Winchester, who vaguely resembles Bob Ross, is joined here by both Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris for this performance of Can't Stand Up All By Myself... [...]

Sham-a-Ling-Dong-Din g
The beautiful thing about music - and I've said it many times before - is there's always something new to discover. The act of hearing a song for the first time, and having it make that instant connection right to the soul - that is why I am obsessed with music, and always on the search for that next gem - regardless of era or genre. This song came to my attention from a Twitter update from Popdose's Jason Hare - okay okay, his tweet ! He had just watched Elvis Costello's Spectacle show [...]
The Night Jesse Winchester Made Neko Cry
"All those sweet old love songs, Oh, every word rings true, Sham-a-ling-dong-ding means sweetheart, And sham-a-ling-dang-dong does too." Wanna know the difference between a great singer and someone with a great voice? Watch this video. Jesse Winchester destroys all sentient beings with this performance of "Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding," a heartbreaking slice of nostalgia done earlier this year on Elvis Costello 's Spectacle . The solitary tear cascading down Neko Case 's face at 3:12 is absolutely priceless. Granted, I wish I could lop off the final :30 of this vid, [...]

All Folked Up
Don't know exactly why I didn't post this in the first place...let's see if the links work! The kids are on spring break; we're spending lots of time at the library and the book stores, hanging out, avoiding the cold rain of...hmm...April. A couple of big projects need to be finished soon, too, so there's not a lot of time to write epic blog posts. So we're mellowing out in a folkie kind of way. Harry Chapin - Corey's Coming [...]
