Pretty sure we'd love this at any time of the year but given that it's written about Christmas and we're midway through December it seems particularly fetching. It comes from a label after our own heart called Old Ugly , based in snowy Edmonton and purpose built to deliver Christmas albums. This is the opening song from last years collection and features a myriad of contributors including Jessica Jalbert who seems intent on turning up on these pages every few months. 'O' To Feel Your Warmth Tonight' is as quiet as a mouse and while nothing particularly stirs our [...]
If last month's mix showed my inspiration from Wyndham's funky February mix , then this one is my homage to Freed's mix last summer . I'm confident that many will make summer mixes, but this one is mine. Others may focus on what's new, but this focuses on what's awesome. And that's what makes it so cool. We at Gold Soundz are super psyched to be presenting Edmonton's Jessica Jalbert (with a full backing band) in Toronto on May 24th at Nocturne . She's an awesome artist and her album Brother Loyola is a beautiful, intimate work full of tight, quality songwriting.

Like the title says. A mix for a friend. Bachelorette , Antwon , Grimes , and a bunch of songs that have either already made it on to monthly mixes, or probably will be in the near future. Stream it on 8tracks: http://8tracks.com/topomodesto /mix-for-lena [ cover art by Moebius (AKA Jean Giraud) ]

I very nearly kept with the themed mixes of vintage tunes, but thought, "No, it's just not fair to everyone..." I know you (like, both of you) count on me for new music, as well as the old, so I needed to bring it this month. And there's still a good serving of old stuff, but hopefully enough things with "20113 in the year category to make this feel relevant if the last few months have felt dated. If you don't enjoy Paul Brunelle's take on country, or Opus 32s cover of Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again;" you're not invited. But [...]

Tweet Sometimes it gets rather boring, all this immediate gratification of the digital age. Have you posed with friends for a group photo lately? The camera makes the rounds until all parties are satisfied that they look suitable for inclusion on Facebook. If an eye is closed or a hair is out of place, the photo goes to the trash bin and and it’s time to try again until the results are perfect. It can be tedious, especially if your friends have [...]

# ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 2011 # What a great year 2011 has been for music, fascinating and fast moving as always. No amount of words will do having these top 50 records justice, but I felt that there’s nothing so impersonal as a list with no explanation. At the same time, writing about 50 albums has consumed so many hours of my time. These numberings aren’t infallible, nor are they particularly objective. Look at this post more as a collection of albums which excited me in 2011, and which formed the great part [...]

Welcome to FWBA's best-of 2011. This has been such a meaningful year in music to me that it's tough to represent in one post. I'm going to be honest, this took me quite a long time. I wanted to do this year justice because personally, it was a total dream: living in San Diego working with some of my favorite artists, going to SXSW and Lollapalooza, seeing Dave Bazan in stranger's living rooms, Feist play a hometown show, saw tune-yards electrified show at Soda Bar clocking in as one of my favorite performances, watching Zach Rogue and my boyfriend playing [...]

I recently came across Edmonton artist, Ghibli after discovering his remix of Jessica Jalbert 's Aubrey De Grey and it is fantastic. He's got a knack for combining electronic vibes with a bit of soul. His take on Aubrey De Gray feels almost like it's got this 60s lounge music sound. The cyclical vocals are almost hypnotizing, as you wait for a little relief he holds on a little while longer until you hear the words, "you're gently used, put on your shoes, these tombstone blues" and everything seems [...]

by teepoo On this blog Jessica Jalbert's voice is not unfamiliar, as last week we posted a duet with her and fellow Albertian Doug Hoyer . Her voice is melancholic and lovely in Necromancy . I don't normally enjoy breathy vocals but there's something quite angelic about this, despite the title of Necromancy . Jessica Jalbert- Necromancy
by teepoo We haven't really had a Snow Bank here in Toronto yet. Yesterday's snowfall lasted maybe 15 minutes and then it melted 15 minutes later. I'm sure the situation is much different in Edmonton where Doug Hoyer is native. It's not a traditional Christmas song, but it is a must add on your holiday/winter playlist. It's a song that reminds me of the same letting go of a loved one as Stars ' Your Ex Lover Is Dead but in a much [...]
Doug Hoyer: “Snow Bank” Celebrating the first snowfall in his home base of Edmonton, Doug Hoyer shared an appropriately themed final single off his solo LP, Walks with the Tender and Growing Night, this week: “Snow Bank,” a twee, boy-girl duet about his first kiss. With a hint of Jens Lekman in his voice, the song forges through an innocent indie-pop vibe into the outro’s busier percussion layers and distorted guitar atmospherics that bring Bright Eyes’ Digital Ash in a Digital Urn to mind. Hear/download the tune, which features recent discovery [...]

Despite the mellow fall we're having, it has already snowed in Edmonton, and Doug Hoyer welcomed that first snowfall with Snow Bank, the release of the last single from his previous album . As per usual from Doug, it's a catchy tune, helped on by the lovely vocals of his frequent collaborator Jessica Jalbert. MP3:: Doug Hoyer - Snow Bank f. Jessica Jalbert WEB:: doughoyer.bandcamp.com
