Seems our Jessie is a chronicler of the human condition and I for one am tuned in to her missives. She occupies a less hostile space than Aimee Mann but in essence the pair are a very close match sonically. '312 is a lovely ballad that serialises the emotions of a past it has-been (only joking) on the cusp of becoming old. I struggled myself, it can be a difficult time but hearing it sung so prettily helps in understanding that you're not alone. The song is well produced with undoubted mainstream appeal but never resorts to cliché or slips [...]

The contrast podcast has been exploring body parts this year and this week the subject is "eyes." As you can imagine, I had a ton of songs to choose from. I decided on this one by Jessie Kilguss when I was on an endorphin high coming back from the gym. It suddenly sounded just right, especially the chorus: "There's a little place behind my eyes where I'm tired / But otherwise I'm doing okay." I think I first heard [...]
Dear Olga Bell: currently, my iPod contains just ten of your band's songs, and only one more is scheduled for a release in the near future. This is unacceptable. Please produce a 3-CD set immediately. Thanks! Sincerely, Scotto. Bell -...

New Yorkers can see Jessie live this Saturday. Everyone can download three tracks from Nocturnal Drifter now. Brooklyn-based singer Jessie Kilguss is riding high on the success of her sophomore album Nocturnal Drifter , released last week on the artist's own Exotic Bird Recordings label. Kilguss was recently the subject in the venerable VenusZine ( LINK ) which described her music as "…intense and atmospheric…" If you haven't had a chance to experience Kilguss ' sound for yourself, [...]

Infectious lead single "A Little Place Behind My Eyes" available for download now. Jessie Kilguss is a singer, not an actress -- it's worth getting that straight up front. With lines as cinematic as "Mesmerized by city streets, you crept your way under my sheets." ("Americana"), one might just be led to believe that this chanteuse who displays bedroom eyes for your ears has had some training. Truth be told, we now realize that a sincerely sung song and a soulful piece of theater are merely great examples of [...]
"Americana" - Jessie Kilguss What I like right away here is the clarity in Kilguss's voice. The overall mood--upbeat, spacious, minor-key, with a piano pulse--has a familiar, Sarah McLachlan-like sheen to it (and nothing, it should be noted, remotely Americana, the genre, about it). But Kilguss does not milk the drama with any extra vocal ache or wooshiness. This makes an immediate difference, to me. Music of this general sort does not usually come with a restrained singer. (Maybe her previous career as an actress keeps her from having to get all melodramatic [...]

If you need an excuse to play loud music from a rooftop in Central London, well it`s always an idea to get a bloody good one. It`s nearly forty years next week The Beatles gave an unannounced performance on Apple`s London office, five songs concluded the band`s last live show together and a very sticky situation for crowd control below. As a fitting tribute, UK band ` Some Morning Velvet ` will be Performing aloft the PRS offices, Berners Street, London at 1.00pm January 30th. A fantastic celebration tied in with an opportunity to raise awareness for the Performing Rights [...]
For most of us, it's cold, snowy, and downright miserable outside. But in many respects, this week is also one of celebration. For one, we're currently taking in the sights and sounds of Chicago's Tomorrow Never Knows Festival , and if you've been reading our coverage, you'll know it's been unbelievably awesome. But that's really only the beginning, as in the coming hours and days, we'll be unveiling a few more goodies that would warm even the coldest of souls. So until then, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week's edition of our Friday Mixtape. TNK Fun: [...]
The holidays are over, which is a big YAY for anyone looking for signs of life from the music industry via new releases. It's still a relatively small week, but things are finally revving back up. I'm excited about what appears to be a stateside release of Burial's contribution to the DJ-Kicks series. Lots of people are talking about Glasvegas , so I'll probably check that out, too. And any of you Apples In Stereo fans should check out Thee American Revolution , Robert Schneider's new band. Also, [...]

photo: Dennis Kleiman Brooklyn singer Jessie Kilguss started out as an actress, but sharing the stage with role-model Marianne Fatihfull opened her eyes. She could be singer too and her first album Exotic Bird saw the light of day in 2007 and the forthcoming follow-up Nocturnal is an album that show an artist who knows she has the ideas and the voice to shape her songs into something special. Because of her acting background, she has a precise phrasing and in-depth knowledge [...]

Jessie Kilguss is not another actress turned musician. Well technically she is, but for a classically trained alum of NYU's acting program who was featured in films with Daniel Day Lewis, she can certainly write a mean song. Her music is an exploration of genres that tastes more like a fine dining sampler platter rather than hobo soup. Her first single A Little Place Behind Your Eyes uses a full-band funk sound under her vocals that are at times as soulful as Joni Mitchell while floating from note to note like Regina Spektor. [...]

In most contexts, when XXX appears in a title, unless your locked in a dark room by yourself, you'd probably be a bit hesitant to click the link. Exotic Bird is an apt title for singer-songwriter Jessie Kilguss. Her subtly saucy voice softly spiels lyrics full of poetically brooding imagery amidst outlandishly diverse arrangements. Kilguss is... **Click on the link to read the full post, download mp3s, and comment.**
