Funny how different albums get you hooked in different ways, in track five Runaway Train the question's asked "what's it gonna take to get your attention" with this debut from Jessie Torrori it was the gorgeous vocal that grabbed my attention immediately and got me listening a little closer. Jessie has moved from playing drums for a series of New York rock bands to fronting her own band based out of Austin and Brûler Brûler (Burn Burn) " [...]

I have these wonderful memories of visiting my great-grandmother Opal with my mom around the holidays. They would sit at the old wooden table, the one I have vague recollections of my great-grandfather always sitting at and playing solitaire, and talk. Well, my mom would talk; Grandma would cuss. And smoke. (She was a wonderful and hilarious woman and I miss her.) And while they were talking and cussing and smoking, I'd be sitting in front of Grandma's record player, listening to Christmas with The Chipmunks . I don't know how many copies of that record she went through, [...]

I have mixed feelings about Christmas. Having grown up Jewish, I always felt a little besieged by what I long considered other peoples' holiday. These days, as a professional culture vulture and cohost to a humanistic Jewnitarian household, the commercialism grates on me, though the threat of otherness has faded. I've even learned to live with the constant name-check of someone else's savior which permeates even the most innocuous of shopping mall soundtracks. But I have always loved the trappings of the holidays: the garish colorful world of [...]

The shops may think that Christmas starts in mid October, but we all know that in reality you should only start preparing on 1st December with that first choccy in the advent calendar. So as a way of starting off the musical advent (and I'm in no way religious, but enjoy a reason for a gluttonous festival as much as the next man), we have a little Christmas/winter indie mixtape from the kind folk over at XO Publicity . A little change from the Slade/Wham/East 17 that you"re all hearing elsewhere. We've always done a [...]
Today's free and legal mp3 downloads: XO Publicity has put together a free and legal album of holiday music, XO for the Holidays: Volume II . Since today marks the unofficial opening of the Christmas and Hannukah season in the US (and since my wife will finally consent to holiday music being played in the house), I thought it a good day to share some festive music. THe BAcksliders : "Christmas (Doesn't Have To Be So [...]

What exactly does it mean to say a particular musician is indie? Any reasonably comprehensive definition of that word is going to be necessarily complex, but if you let me get parsimonious on your asses for a second, I'll say the indie tag employs a combination of (a) financial integrity and (b) a songcrafting/recording/produci ng style that is, in one way or another, somewhat fucked up, quirky, unique, or just plain different enough to void any chance of mainstream radio play. The professor in me automatically thinks of such definitional situations in terms of matrices, in this case a [...]
After playing drums for a number of NYC bands Jessie Torrisi has stepped out on her own with a wonderful debut album called Bruler Bruler (pronounced broo-lay broo-lay which means burn burn in French). The now based in Austin, Texas (with former roots in Philly) Jessie wields a guitar and a downright rocking set of tunes filled with swagger and sexiness that finds Jessie at a cool crossroads
