"Weightless and Horizontal" by Jesu which clocks in at 10:06 Heyo! Woo hoo! Congratulations! No, really. You've earned it! It's... it's EAR FARM reader appreciation day! Now, I may not be able to respond to each and every email that is sent to EAR FARM headquarters but you should know that I do in fact read every last little line of text that shows up in the EF inbox. And what better way, I figured, to give back to all of you (the loyal readers) [...]

I held off on Jesu for a long time. Due to some bad information, I think I had them pegged in my mind as a cross between like Sleep and Drive Like Jehu - which is not only wrong, but makes no sense. Fortunately, I bit the bullet one day and listened to their self-titled album. It was awesome. While I was listening, I kept thinking, "What the hell, music this heavy has no right to be this good." But then I remembered how good stuff like Red Sparowes, [...]

In trying to stay up again with frequent posting, I present to you a collection of recent tracks in my automobile. From my summer stomping grounds in Alaska, Parker Longbough is releasing his debut on Wilderhook Records, Commander Comatose . This lo-fi album brings an interesting twist of passive aggressive teenage angst with the enjoyable drone of Built to Spill, which certainly comes through on "Think On Your Own". "Further Forward" features an unflinching drum beat in the verse, followed by a lamenting and thoughtful chorus, which is unfortunately eclipsed by [...]

Here is a ranking of the full albums that I have purchased so far this year (that were released this year). I think it's been a record for new albums in 3 months, at least for me. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank And this is absolutely the best Modest Mouse track since 2000's The Moon and Antarctica . What a great song. Go buy the album please if you enjoy the song [...]

The Bird and the Bee - I'm a Broken Heart The subject matter might not be the best spring music, but the music certainly sounds it. This reminds me of what a girl version of Peter, Bjorn, and John might sound like. I really feel bad for this girl being "a broken heart", she seems so sweet...who could do this to her? They are sure to pay. Great trumpet solo in the middle as well. Buy Here Sun Kil Moon - Kentucky Woman I [...]

Monday: Loney , Dear @ Union Hall 8pm $10 Sweden is the current hot bed of indie music, and tonight I finally get a chance to check out the latest Swedish import Loney , Dear. As you may remember, I recommended Loney , Dear's Sub Pop debut, Loney , Noir a few weeks ago and it just keeps popping up on my iPod . The album is full of what we've come to expect from these Swedish singer/ songwriters so if that's your [...]

Conqueror Hydra Head 2007 I can't believe this is happening. I'm listening to an album by Justin Broadrick, and I can't wait for it to end. This has never happened before. Even Hymns , arguably the weakest Godflesh album, had some brilliant peaks. But Conqueror - it bores me. By normal standards, it's a good album. The songs are pleasant, and the mix is fine, if lacking in heaviness. Drums sound nicely natural, [...]

WORD
When I was in high school, my musical hero was Justin K. Broadrick, the singer/guitarist of Godflesh. At the time, I was fully immersed in industrial music, and Broadrick's name was plastered over everything I liked. It was pretty soon that I was tracking down every obscure release I could find that he was involved in. From the Sweet Tooth album that took me a few years to find to every single release by God, the free jazz supergroup run by Kevin Martin. I even have the 2 brutal remixes that Broadrick did of Pantera - a holy grail if [...]

Birmingham, England Conqueror is the new album from Jesu (pronounced yay-zu), and it's out today on Hydra Head Records . "Stanlow" Jesu on MySpace
I'm exhausted. The nights are getting later and the days ahead are filled with arduous tasks that will demand my full attention. There's no sense in sharing all the gory details. It's quite inconsequential, really. You're just hear for the music anyway. RULES for the uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly compilation for your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not [...]
Our good friends at Hydra Head Industries have blessed us with not one but two exclusive MP3s today. We present to you "Old Year", a song from Conqueror, the new album from former Godflesh mastermind Justin Broadrick. Check back within the next few days for another installment of our IdioSYNcratic Routine interview series with Mr. [...]
"Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert! Catch the intruder. Chicken! Fight like a robot!" -- Tom, alerting the humanoid to Evil Otto's arrival, and then taunting it "What? Best film of the year? That might not have even been the best film I saw that week ." -- Tom, refusing to buy into Little Miss Sunshine 's Oscar hype "If their song was played any slower, it would have been going backwards." -- Tom on The Shins' SNL dirge "It's barely even music." -- [...]

Justin Broadrick has a long history with heavy guitar. Most projects he's been involved in have focused on heaviness over strict attention to melody. Even Jesu's earlier album retained a concrete wall of guitar that floored the senses. However beginning with last year's Silver EP the sound of Jesu began to float in a murkiness that allowed elements of shoegaze, pop and dreamy drone to seep into Brodrick's melancholy world. The band's latest offering Conqueror reveals some of Jesu's most beautiful works to date. Simultaneously heavy and spacious; as if the concrete walls that hem in [...]

It was brought to my attention that a slight recap might be in order for my favorites of 2006 thus far. I guess this year has pretty much flown by that I hadn’t even thought about the idea of doing one. Anyway, today I am posting a track from each of my favorite releases thus far. Some of you may notice that I’ve already posted quite a few of these, but not everyone has been reading that long. So it’s a good way to catch up too! Click on the band/artists name to take you [...]
